MALAWI MOMENTS Delegation Visit is Happening Now!
The delegates have been in Malawi for 6 days now having arrived last Tuesday. They settled into Bishop Montfort Stima's house for
the first few days. It is a compound built by the Italian missionaries that first ministered to the area. It is surrounded by white con-
crete walls, has a front gated entry, and a central courtyard. There are out buildings with cooking and laundry areas. The electricity
is spotty with frequent blackouts so there is a backup generator for lights in the evenings. There is a TV in the common area. There
is daily Mass in the chapel that seats approximately 20. The house has accommodations for around 12 with the guest rooms hav-
ing 2 twin beds and a bathroom in each. The showers have a switch to turn on the warm water, when they are working proper-
ly. Some of the activities they hope to experience are- visits to the various neighborhood churches, special liturgies and the cathe-
dral, a trip to Liwonde National park for Nature watching, to Mua Cultural center for the History and Art of the peoples of the area,
and to Lake Malawi. Then there will be as much time a possible spent in the village of Namalaka, visiting the people of our sister
parish which includes 6 out churches as the parish is very spread out and people travel mostly on foot or bicycle. School will be on
break for the summer but we hope to meet with some teachers, parents, families and youth. And also get updated on the Catholic
women's group projects. Please continue to pray for Fr. Wichert, Dale Garrett, Marie Hedden and Brigette Blair, our delegates.

Old Testament
DAVID WANTS TO FIGHT
1 Samuel 17: 1-37
David was the armor bearer to King
Saul. That means he carried the
king’s sword and shield and
probably helped him put on his
armor. The Israelites were always
fighting the Philistines. At this time
the Philistines had on their side a
giant of a man named Goliath. Even
the Israelite soldiers were very
afraid of him. Every day he came
out and shouted to them to come
and fight, one-on-one. David was
young and eager and he wanted to
fight Goliath. Everyone made fun of
him, most of all Goliath. Saul said
that David could take his chances
as long as he wore heavy armor
and wielded a big sword. David
instead insisted on his own little
sling shot with its handy bag of
rocks. He had used that weapon
many times to kill wild animals.
New Testament
THE TRANSFIGURATION
Mark 9: 2-8
These days we have a lot of special
effects that we see in movies and in
real life. Fireworks shows and dazzling
lights are used to entertain us and to
advertise things for us to buy. Jesus
took his disciples Peter, James, and
John up the mountain. He wanted
them to be present when he met with
two people they would want to know—
Moses and Elijah. Moses had died
many years before, and Elijah had
been carried off to heaven. How did
the disciples recognize them? Moses
and Elijah appeared on the mountain
with Jesus. Together they were talking
about what would happen in
Jerusalem. Suddenly Jesus was shown
to them in all his glory. His clothing
and face became a dazzling white.
Nothing that we have seen could ever
compare. The disciples fell down and
worshipped. After Jesus was risen from
the dead they remembered their
mountaintop experience.

Every person’s finances
and family situation is dif-
ferent. Jesus makes it
clear that it matters not
how much one gives, but
that it is planned, calculat-
ed, at least some-
what sacrificial (see Luke
24:1-4), and not simply
from what is “leftover” at
the end of the month. We
propose the tithe (10%) as
the ideal every family can
consider working to-
wards. This means taking
steps to give 5% to one’s
parish, and 5% to other
charities or causes you
have personal passion for.
