WELCOME TO PATHWAY TO 2050Welcome to the second annual California gathering of the Advanced Energy Economy. We have dynamic business leaders and outstanding public officials coming together today to discuss California’s energy future. Thank you for your participation and leadership.

California is the leader of energy innovation in the United States. This status is rooted in the state’s unique assets in entrepreneurship and venture capital combined with policy commitments to cleaner energy and to lower greenhouse gas emissions. We can see it all around us: wind and solar farms in the desert, electric vehicles on the highways and solar on rooftops. The state is reaping the benefits in energy efficiency savings, cleaner air, new jobs and business growth. In California, we can truly see the advanced energy economy having an impact.

California is at a critical juncture. The cap-and-trade program has moved from drawing board to implementation. The burden now is on all of us to produce results. The same is true of Prop 39. With energy upgrades of schools and public buildings underway, California’s energy and climate programs are no longer about the future. They are about today. The focus is on performance.

Even so, the future still matters. California is well on its way to fulfilling its commitments for 2020 – including 33 percent of electricity coming from renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions down to 1990 levels. Goals for 2050 are another matter. Have we built the public, business, and financing infrastructure for advanced energy development on the scale we will need to reach 80 percent emissions reduction by 2050? Are we working through the challenges of today in ways that equip us to meet the challenges of tomorrow?

California has made a promise of secure, clean, affordable energy for all. Now it’s time to deliver on that promise. Thank you for engaging in this important conversation.
