AUGUSTBOOSTER-2018
Dear Members, Our Exalted Ruler, Alan Quinton, had his hands full this month – he will be back next month with oh so many items to report to you. In the meantime, if you have any comments or questions – or would just like to drop a line to say hi – you may reach Alan at [email protected] or catch him at the Lodge. In lieu of his ER letter we present to our membership the following:
Our Pool – A Big Fund-a-Need Callout San Rafael Elks Lodge Members,
Our pool is an important asset to our Lodge. Not only does it add value to our estate, it also serves our members, their families and guests wonderfully.
We are in the position where we have some big (ok, very, very big) expenditures for repairs that are required by the City of San Rafael. This is a huge project $36,000-$70,000 (we are currently under negotiations with the City) and the work needs to be done this fall/winter.
This sounds like a lot of money. However, when we come together as members the burden is minified and, frankly, achievable! Our fundraising target is to average $200 per member – with a commitment that after the required repairs are made, the remaining funds will be used for further pool beautification effort (lights, locker rooms!, etc.)
We understand that some of our members are not in the position to contribute $200 and others are in the position to contribute more. And, gratefully, we’ve already had two members commit $500 each.
If you enjoy the pool regularly or enjoy a family pass, please consider contributing a little more, but only if you can.
Even if you don’t frequent the pool, please do contribute. This is a valuable asset of our Lodge and we all share in the benefits of having a grand estate that serves all members.
And, finally, if you wish to help with our fundraising efforts through volunteerism, we are having multiple fundraisers in which you are welcome.
We are all in this together and we hope you contribute to this Lodge project, as you are able.
How to contribute: Please make a check out to San Rafael Elks Lodge with the notation “Pool Fund-a-Need” in the memo line. You can drop it off in the Secretary’s office and say hi to Monica (always a treat in itself!), drop it in the grey Secretary’s box in the entryway, or mail a check to San Rafael Elks Lodge, PO Box 150789, San Rafael, CA 94915. You may also pay by credit card. Contact Monica at (415) 453-1108 or [email protected] and she will assist you with the transaction. Any questions, contact Jen O’Mara at [email protected]
Thank you, Your Lodge

WELCOME KATY AHRENS - OUR NEW VOLUNTEER COODINATOR
Volunteering: Want to help in the Lodge every now and then? On a regular basis? Once a year? Contact Katy with your availability and she will find the perfect fit for you in the Lodge. Email [email protected] - and leave Katy your name, phone number and what area you would like to help. Thank you!
Don’t forget to LOG all your volunteer hours. Everything you do inside/and outside the Lodge and for the Lodge counts for hours! (Except for Lodge meetings). We know many of you are busy behind the scenes. We want you to count! It is super important for a non-profit like the Elks to submit volunteer hours monthly. This keeps our 501(c)(8) non-profit status in good standing. GO TO 1108 website, scroll down on Home Page – click “Log my Volunteer Hours” Button and presto! We will record accordingly for Grand Lodge.
PURPLE PIG (CHEMPI) DONORS – the following members really take the meaning of “A coin a day helps children walk, talk and play”. These members have all contributed FULL Piggy Banks to the CHEMPI project helping disabled children with a variety of screenings and therapies. Don’t forget to turn in your Filled Purple Pig to the bar or office. (or to the bar, label your pig)
Recent Filled Pigs: Again a big whoop for Jodie Holsten
What????? Can’t be bothered with loose change? Go online and sign up for a recurring donor – CHEMPI (California Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc) CHEA-ELKS website.

Elkdom & Charity
BLT NOW ASK ME HOW
The Bequest and Living Trust Overview
BLT is short for the Bequest and Living Trust Committee. The idea behind the BLT is to encourage all Elks to name the Major Project as a beneficiary of their Estate in any amount an Elk and spouse can afford. It is recognized that an Elk’s first responsibility is to the family.
The purpose of Bequest and Living Trust BLT was not begun as a replacement for the Piggy Bank Program but to work hand in hand with it. The aim of the BLT Committee is to insure the future of
the Major Project. To guarantee that future, the BLT Committee is seeking commitments from Elks and their spouses, stating that they have provided for a distribution from their estate (upon their death) to continue the good works of the Major Project. Giving to the Major Project through BLT is not limited to Elks alone. Anyone can direct that a charitable gift be given to CHEMPI from their Estate.
The BLT Benefactor Program The Benefactor Program was formed to recognize Elks, their spouses and others who have made a commitment to the Major Project either through their wills or through a direct donation. All gifts made through the BLT Benefactor program will be invested prudently to obtain maximum growth.
The BLT Benefactor Program is designed to make it easy and affordable for everyone to give. With tax benefits to the donor and immeasurable benefits to disabled children.
The BLT Commitment Trust Program
The Commitment Trust is a charitable re-mainder unitrust (UT) which pays 7% of the trust value each year for as long as the donor or spouse is living. When both of you have passed on, the value of the trust is transferred to the Major Project program. There is a $10,000 minimum to establish a commitment trust.
Based upon your ages, a $10,000 commitment trust will create an immediate income tax deduction. The final deduction amount depends upon time of creation of the trust since your ages and IRS' monthly factor impact the deduction calculation.
The Benefits to You
You and your spouse will have lifetime income
An income tax deduction Avoidance of capital gains taxes Reduced estate taxes Tax sheltered growth BLT recognitions For More Information On the California-Hawaii Elks Bequest and Living Trust Program Contact the BLT Committee at: BLT Committee c/o The Major Project 5450 E. Featured Speaker: Herb RowlandIgnacio Pacheco, one of California’s earliest pioneers, settled in what is now Marin County in 1840. He is believed to have been the first to plant grape vines in the region and his influence can still be seen in the names of nearby places. For his services to the Mexican Government in Monterey, CA., he was originally given the Agua Caliente Rancho in Sonoma, which he deemed “unsuitable for agriculture” and later exchanged it for the Rancho San Jose grant, a 6,680-acre parcel in Marin. Today, Pacheco Ranch is 70 acres of the original land grant and the property’s vineyards were planted by Ignacio’s decedents and winery partners.
Herb Rowland is Ignacio Pacheco’s great-great-grandson, the manager of the Pacheco Winery, and a partner at Ragghianti & Freitas law firm.
$10 suggested donation. Free entry for Elks with ID card.
