Monthly Meeting – Feb 8, 2018

Jim Holloways 1933 Pontiac 5 – Window Coupe

It all started when I was 12 and my brother was 9. My parents, for Christmas, gave my brother a huge Yellow

Canary T-bucket model kit. (I see Dave Stefanko's ride.) I got a green plaid suit. Really, I think they liked me

best. Anyway, the dream was planted. The Pontiac started it's street rod journey in April 1999. My friend and I

were driving home from the pub and saw a 1930's rod. I commented that I would like to have a street rod some

day and he replied that his brother was selling an old original 30's car that was going to be restored but the

project had stalled. I went with my friend to have a look. It was yellow. Again, the yellow but at least it wasn't

a belly button Ford. ( as editor I reserve the right to edit the comments made by Jim ) The car originally came

from the Edmonton area. Some jewelry pieces were missing but all the big pieces were there and I didn't see

any rust. Fortunately the wood was real good. I went home and reasoned with my wife to trust me. The owner

only wanted his investment back and so I bought it for $3,950.00.

Now what to do? Talked to a guy at the drags who suggested I join the Langley Loafers. I was subsequently

told that I had to live in Langley to be a member. A bit stand offish I thought. I got a reference to PISRA and

called Rob Petty who came over to talk and see the car. I joined the club and the car soon went to Doug Curran's

shop for frame set up works. Next the car went to Bill Noble for body, paint and assembly, then to Dan

Dierdich's place for glass and Bob Campbell for upholstery. Ron Wenger nearly gave me a rebuilt

front and Ford 8” rear ends. The project took close to15 years and I'm still tinkering. Several club members

helped out whenever I asked. There is more car knowledge and expertise within our club than you will ever

need. Thanks guys. For sure, I'd do it again.

Meeting adjourned

Two pictures noted above were caused under different circumstances….Dave’s newly finished Coupe was

damaged by a new driver crossing two lanes and forcing Dave into the curb in the middle medium. Here you

can only see the badly damaged rear fender, but the real damage is underneath as the front end was badly bent

and damaged. Hopefully we have some good people who can help get him back onto the road before winter

comes.

The second picture is a different story… It was partially self inflicted… many of us have put a car on a trailer

and secured it down for the trip ahead. Making sure it didn’t move was our first priority and what we secured it

to sometimes got blurred. In this case, the axle straps or strapping got wrapped around the axle and brake line…

causing the brake line to ruptured. When the straps were loosened and the car started to roll off, it was

discovered the car no longer had brakes and the nearest wall was looming up fast. If anyone can guess which

club car this is, he or she will get to give the owner of the 32 a swift kick in the butt… nothing hurts more than

these kind of boo boos that are caused by either being rushed or not paying attention … especially when you

cannot blame anyone else….

Oldtimers 50th Anniversary Show in Port Angeles…

This was a great show… over 175 cars I think and they only expected high 80’s… so you can imagine the cars

A few more from the OldTimers run…. The fat 48 Ford was now a hard top…he removed the post and the

top of the door… it looked pretty good…

I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose fitting clothing, If I had any loose fitting clothing, I wouldn’t

have signed up to begin with…..

I picked up a hitch-hiker the other day, seemed like a nice guy. After a few miles he asked me if I wasn’t afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the same vehicle at the same time was extremely unlikely….

Russ sent in a

couple shots from

the Tsawwassen Car

show last week.. I

heard it was a huge

show with quite a

few members

attending…

Thanks for the pics
