Stogursey News is an independent voluntary initiative. It is printed free of charge as a contribution to the community by Hinkley Point B (EdF). The News offers an extra page monthly for the use of Hinkley Point C (EdF) to keep local residents well informed. The magazine is distributed to every household in the parish by a team of magnificent volunteers. We are most grateful.

    Editorial

One of the best things about a monthly magazine is the opportunity it gives to follow the interests and activities of a local community as they happen. So should someone read this edition of Stogursey News in 100 years’ time what would they learn about life in this village in August 2016 and what would they find most interesting? .

In this edition the children have written about the things they have enjoyed most in their time in the school and about the changes the older ones are facing as they prepare to move on to senior schools.

There is news about the preparations for the Arts Festival and information about the difficulties people face as a consequence of the reduction in the local Bus service and a future reader might be wryly amused by the ongoing saga of Hinkley Point.

Since the last edition of Stogursey News lives have been lost in violent conflict in France, Turkey and other parts of the world and important decisions have been taken in this country which could have consequences for our way of life and the relationships we have with other countries

Throughout our history people in our village have lived through the impact of many social changes. Will the recent decisions bring big differences to our way of life and how will 2016 be remembered here? The contents of Stogursey News might become a useful resource.

Henry was born in Wick in 1872. His parents were Clement & Elizabeth Chilcott. Henry initially worked as an agricultural labourer and then joined the army, serving in India for 8 years. He then volunteered for the 8th. Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, Serjeant No. 3/7986.

He was killed at the Battle of the Somme on July 1st, 1916. The village of Ovilliers was attacked by the 8th Division on that day, and Henry is buried nearby at Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovilliers-la-Boiselle. He was awarded the Allied Victory Medal and the British War Medal. His pay and gratuity were sent to his brother George.

  • Key Points from the Parish Council Meeting held on 12 July 2016.Lengths-man SchemeFollowing on from last month’s report, we have agreed a new draft contract specification for a potential annual lengths-man service for the period 1 April to 30 September each year. Instead of an August parish council meeting we will be travelling around the parish confirming the areas of work we would wish to be carried out under such a scheme. If appropriate, the draft contract specification will then be amended prior to being sent to the three selected contractors who we will be inviting to tender. Once tenders have been received we will progress to a full application against the Hinkley C Community Impact Mitigation fund.

Other Enhancements Hanging Baskets and Flower TubsOnly a couple of volunteers came forward to help with the task of watering the hanging baskets, which in the main has been left to Allan Searle. They were previously watered on a regular basis by the lengths-man which is no longer possible. The baskets do not seem to retain water and therefore are in a bit of a sorry state. If we cannot come up with a more satisfactory solution we may need to do away with them altogether in the future. The flower tubs on The Gravel however, are looking glorious thanks to the efforts of Jan and Chris Ford who have been watering them regularly.

Benches and St Andrews WellWe wish to thank Ron Calder for the excellent job he has done refurbishing the benches on The Gravel and the windows at St Andrew’s Well.

Vegetation ClearanceWe also thank Simon Foster for clearing the vegetation along the stream between Zoggs and Castle St.

School CrossingThere have been a number of concerns notified to us regarding the safety of children crossing the busy road to and from the School, and in particular the exit which is virtually concealed from passing vehicles. We have been trying to negotiate speeding restrictions/signage outside the School for the past couple of years in conjunction with County Councillor Hugh Davies. Hugh applied for funding (now approved) from the SCC Highways under the Small Improvement Scheme for a speed reduction signage system. We understand a design is currently being worked on, and could possibly be implemented this autumn.

Speed Indication Device (SID) Results Tower Hill, Stogursey

    During the 15 day period 13th – 27th June, from the total of 7709 vehicles (an average 514 vehicles per day) 3773 were recorded at < 30mph; 3735 between 30-40mph, 198 between 40-50mph and 3 > 50mph. ShurtonDuring the 14 day period 31st May - 13th June, from the total of 8157 vehicles (an average 583 vehicles per day) 5719 were recorded at < 30mph; 2380 between 30-40mph, 58 between 40-50mph and 0 > 50mph.

It is evident from these results that greater speeds (in percentage terms) are being recorded by the SID box at Tower Hill which may add emphasis to the concerns indicated above regarding the school crossing.

Commercial Bus ServiceAgain concerns have been expressed to us regarding the poor bus service currently operating. I will be following this up with Somerset County Council over the coming month, as we understand a new service provider and contract arrangement are being discussed.

Parish Clerk VacancyAfter almost 7 years in post, I have decided to ‘hang up my boots” as parish clerk. A vacancy notice will be placed on notice boards and also in this edition of the Stogursey News. I have enjoyed the role immensely during my tenure, but have decided that a rest and a change is about due!

THE NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE ON TUESDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2016We will have no meeting in August, reverting to the former tradition of no August meeting, but a “walk around the parish” to assess enhancement needs and opportunities, together with finalising the lengths-man service requirements as above.

I look forward to hearing from you on any issues you wish to discuss. My phone number is 01278 652426 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]

  • STOGURSEY PARISH COUNCIL

    VACANCY FOR PARISH CLERK

We are looking for a new parish clerk with effect from 1 October 1st 2016. This is a very varied and interesting role; duties will include:

Preparation for and attending monthly parish council (agendas, papers and production of minutes) and other ad hoc meetings. Meetings are mostly evenings but some may be held during the day.

Dealing with all correspondence, updating notice boards and the parish council information on the Stogursey website

Advising the Council on legal and financial matters ensuring the Council is acting within its legal powers and responsibilities

Acting as Responsible Financial Officer in keeping the Council’s financial records and completing the audit process each year (including processing of invoices, PAYE, bank reconciliation and annual accounts)

Undertaking such other admin duties as the Council may require from time to time

The post holder will be required to work from home; office equipment (lap top computer and printer) will be provided. The time spent by the Clerk on Council business varies throughout the year, but approximates to ten hours per week.

Pay is in accordance with the National Joint Council for Local Government Services (NJC) Scale LC1 points 15 (£8.717 per hour) to SCP 27(£12.440 per hour) depending on experience. In addition, an allowance towards office and travelling costs will be made.

You should submit your application (including a CV, reasons why you are applying for this post and your experience) to the Clerk by 26 August 2016 (interviews will be held early September).............................................................................................

For an information pack and/or an informal discussion, please contact the Clerk (Aly Prowse 01278 652426; [email protected]) or the Chairman Allan Searle 01278 732820

    HINKLEY UPDATE

‘It will go ahead’. This was David Eccles’ assertion at the Main Site Neighbourhood Forum meeting on Wednesday, July 13th. He explained that the problems with the French unions had been resolved, Brexit will not make any difference to the agreement, and both the French and British governments are supportive. We were almost convinced!

The site preparation works are being speeded up, and work on the Dunball park-and-ride will start shortly. The present work on the C162 will provide a cycle track between Cannington & Combwich, but unfortunately no further, where it is needed most.

A workshop on communications between EdF and the residents formed the first part of the meeting, which despite EDF’s best efforts are still unsatisfactory. Peter Farmery talked of his concerns about access to the land south of the Hinkley C site boundary. While open to the public it is unclear what will happen to it in the immediate (2 years) and long-term future. There seems to be no formal commitment for its use by locals. David Eccles said that every effort would be made to keep it open, but that Health & Safety considerations would mean that walkers would be kept to the designated footpaths while any ground work was going on. Andrew Goodchild said that West Somerset Council would be involved in plans for the long-term use of the area. As a concession, work in this area would be limited to the hours between 7.00 and 23.00hr. with a noise restriction after 19.00hr. Work would only be carried out for 5½ days per week. However the original agreement for work on the main site – just over the fence – would still apply, namely 7.00 to 23.00hr, 7 days per week and working through the night at reduced decibels.

The next Forum meeting (open to all parishioners) will be held on October 19th when it is hoped the decision to go ahead with the main project will have been made.

    Aubrey Knowles

Anno 1670 September: This year, not far from Cirencester, there came an apparition, which when asked if it be a good spirit or bad, returned no answer, but disappeared with a curious perfume and a most melodious twang. My friend Mr William Lilly believes it was a fairy.

  • Stogursey Arts Festival Update 2016When a great moment knocks on the door of your life, it is often no louder than the beating of your heart, and it is very easy to miss it. Boris Pasternak

Following the success of our illustrated ‘In Conversation’ event last year with the author Paul Upton on the life and work of Hans Schwarz, our opening event for the Festival 2016 will begin with a lively ‘platform discussion’ featuring a surprise guest from the world of art and design. Ticket entry for the Festival opening event at 7pm, Wednesday 21st September in the Church Rooms, includes a complementary glass of wine.

The Art Exhibitions and the Flower Festival in the Church and Church Rooms will be open from Thursday 22nd through to Sunday 25th from 10am - 4pm every day, except for Sunday when they will be open from 10am till 2pm.

Each evening from dusk till 10pm (weather permitting) there will be lighting/projection events around the village in conjunction with Ignite Somerset. There will also be another chance to see Clocks by Candlelight, especially for those who were not able to go last year, as all places were booked quicker than Glastonbury!

On Thursday 22nd from 8pm we are hosting an Italian Renaissance ‘banquet’ and games evening in the Church Rooms. This will be a ‘ticket in advance’ event, details to be published in the Post Office.

At 4pm on Friday there will be a Private View of the Stogursey School’s Art Exhibition, which is open from 10am till 3pm on the Saturday when children will be involved in the Big Draw, which was so successful last year. The children’s Well Dressing will be blessed on the Sunday morning at St Andrew’s Well – all welcome.

Make sure you have the Friday evening Raku Firing on the Gravel in your diary. This event will begin at dusk when the whole process will come to life under the expert wizardry of our resident ceramicist Paul Welbourne. It involves fire, sparks, a lot of smoke and alchemy and should provide a wonderful spectacle, weather permitting. It’s free to watch, but donations will be welcome.

The Craft Fayre will run from 10am - 3pm in the Victory Hall on Saturday, so if you are looking for that ‘arty’ gift in readiness for a special birthday or for Christmas, there will be lots to choose from.

And we are not finished yet, as there are all the music and performance events. Watch out on Saturday for The Big Noise street band, Morris Dancing and various friends of Russell Scarecrow around the village. Don’t forget to book your tickets for the Music Gala on Saturday evening from 7pm in the Victory Hall. You are welcome to bring a picnic supper and enjoy the mini Beer Fest while you listen to the line-up, which includes some of our local trusted favourite talent, as well as some surprise international performers. All will be revealed in the full programme, out in early September.

On Sunday we will be running a singing workshop in St Andrew’s Church from 3pm – 4.30pm, which will be followed by a concert at 5pm. As the Festival draws to a close, we will celebrate with Evensong at 6.30pm followed by a Somerset Supper as a fitting conclusion to what we hope will be yet another great year of community engagement, entertainment and display of the local creative talent we are so proud of here in Stogursey.

You will soon be able to book your place for all the events, so don’t miss out, watch for more details on the posters, or contact Tim.

    A letter to all scarecrows

    Dear Scarecrows

It’ll soon be time to think about what you’re going to wear for this year’s Scarecrow Trail.

To be sure of getting on the trail map, please fill in an entry form. These will be available at the Flower Show; at the Post Office from the beginning of August and in the September issue of Stogursey News. If you would like to be included in this year’s scarecrow trail quiz (and have lots of people coming to visit you) please be ‘on show’ by Monday 19th September.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

  • HAPPY ENDINGS - POETRY SOCIETY

Kay opened the evening with a quote from Kjell Silverstein, “There are no happy endings. Endings are the saddest part. So just give me a happy middle, and a very happy start!” which she did with a section of the Song of Hiawatha by American poet Longfellow.

Tony then gave Sir Henry Newbolt’s “Orchard Lea“ about a dispute over the burial site of a favourite and life-saving Great Dane, whose noble owner left directions for the dog to be buried at his feet in sanctified ground to the later horror of a Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Fran shared “At Grass” by Phillip Larkin – old retired racehorses on a summer’s day – “they have slipped their names” and now they gallop only for joy. Libby had us in gales of laughter with The Wonder Bra song; and I finished the first round with Shakespeare’s sonnet 30.

Kay found an unusual and optimistic poem in a magazine dated 1989, anticipating all the good things that could happen to the writer in 1990. Tony thought he might lower the tone with an Australian poem by “Blue” Wilson, about a man who simply could not reverse a vehicle with a trailer attached. Fran’s Christina Rossetti poem “Uphill” was reassuring in in Q&A format – every worry was soothed with a good answering scenario. Libby contributed our former rector John Tyler’s poem “The Wedding Feast in Cana”, where the bride’s worries about no more wine, were solved by Jesus’ miracle with the water in the water jars. April finished with WH Davies’ uncharacteristic piece “Sweet Stay-at-Home”, praising a girl perfectly happy, without travel and adventure, simply because she had the gift of contentment.

Next meeting: September 13th, 7.30pm at Libby’s, and the theme, as it is in the Festival season, is “The Arts”.

STEWARDS ROTASTOGURSEY ARTS FESTIVAL - 2016

I’m hoping all who were Stewards last year will be able to help again this year in the Church or Church Rooms

However, as the Festival now covers more days, I’m looking for many more volunteers PLEASE.

If you can spend an hour (or two or three!) on either the Thursday, 22nd, Friday, 23rd, Saturday 24th, or Sunday 25th September, please phone me on 01278 733070.

    Many thanks, Janet Kroner

    W.I. Report

After the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, there were many matters arising to deal with. Jenny Ody agreed to be co-opted on to the committee. Arrangements for the W I stall at the Flower Show on 30th June were finalised. A team was selected to take part in the quiz on 20th July at the Windmill, St Audries. A croquet afternoon will be held in the garden of Jarvis House on 10th August when members will take along a plate of refreshments for a shared tea. The summer outing will be on 17th August, leaving the Victory Hall car park at 10.30 am to go to Dobies Garden Centre near Shepton Mallett for lunch followed by a visit to Wraxall Vineyard.

While tea and coffee were served, a mini casino was set up and small fortunes were won and lost at the roulette tables, fortunately only in plastic tokens.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 14th September at 7.30 pm in the St Audries Centre when Sandy Bateman will talk about the Minack Theatre. The competition is a fancy dress costume to wear or to display.

At the May meeting, the arrangements for the Group Meeting to be held on 21st September and the venue for the summer outing were discussed. Members were overwhelmingly in favour of having a barn dance rather than a talk at the group meeting and chose Wraxall Vineyard for the outing.

After the business was concluded, Coleen Blake from West Somerset District Council spoke briefly about Community Employment Hub which she hopes to set up in Stogursey. It would run on one morning per week in the Church Rooms, manned by trained volunteers, along the lines of hubs which are running successfully in Watchet, Williton and Alcombe. Volunteers are needed to befriend unemployed people who come for help with such things as writing a CV, filling in a job application on paper or on the internet, preparing for an interview and so on. Anyone interested in volunteering can find more information in a leaflet in the Post Office or the Church Rooms or by contacting Coleen on 0773958441.

  • Summer Holidays for the pupils began when the term ended on Tuesday 19th July. The summer term is always a busy one, with lots of activities and trips happening. Pre-School Farming and Gardening Farm Visit Twenty of the Pre-school children visited a farm where they held piglets, saw baby calves, went into the milking parlour to see where the cows are milked and sat on some very big tractors! Gardening The Pre-School children have been very busy over the last few weeks growing vegetables, fruits and flowers in their garden. They have already been picking and eating the strawberries, and will pick and taste their broad beans on the last Friday of term. Recently the children rescued some abandoned and rather sad tomato plants and were delighted with how quickly the plants recovered once they had been watered. The children have seen the sunflowers grow much taller than themselves, and are watching carefully, hoping that the flowers will soon grow even taller than Tina! Team Rubicon Skate Day As always this was a fantastic day. All three classes (Oak, Hazel and Willow) spent time with Frasier learning some more skate board skills. Everyone had smiles on their faces and did very well. On Guard! Willow class pupils have really enjoyed their fencing sessions this term. You never know, one day we might see one of them competing at the Olympic Games! School Play This   term’s   performance is described by some of the Year 6 pupils: On Tuesday 12th July, Stogursey School put on  a  show.    This  year  they  did  ‘Alice  in

Wonderland’.     All   the   pupils   in   the   school  were included in the play: Hazel Class were the animals in the Caucus race, and Oak class were the tiny cards. Both classes sang brilliantly. Most of Willow class had important parts. Everyone was very good at singing the songs in the show, but the Mad Hatter (Will), the Mouse (Luke), the Caterpillar (Charlie), the Mock Turtle (Amber), Alice (Sophy), and the White Rabbit (Imi) all sang solos. The most-liked  song  was  ‘Off  with  her  head.’     According to James, who played the Executioner,   ‘Caucus  Race’  and  ‘Who  Stole  the  Tarts’  were  also  very  popular  songs. Most of the props, and some of the costumes, were made by Mrs Cavill, and were lovely. Year 6 trip to Harry Potter Studios On Friday 8th July we went to the Harry Potter Studies, Watford, London. There we learnt some of the most amazing secrets that no-one has heard, seen or noticed before. During our day we went to Warner Brothers own cinema to see Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe in a behind-the-scenes mini film about Warner Bros Studios. After the film the board went up and we saw the doors of the Great Hall. We walked down Diagon Alley and through the great hall. We saw different rooms like the  boys’  dormitory  and  Hagrid’s  hut.     A great day was had by all as we tried butter beer. We also saw a fantastic, massive model  of  Hogwart’s  Castle.           We’re  leaving  .  .  . As the term ended, there were many goodbyes. Pre-School  Leavers’  Assembly On Wednesday 13th July there was a special leavers’   assembly   in   the   school   hall   for   the  children who are leaving Pre-school. Many of   the   children’s   parents   were   there   to   see

  • Tina Miller present each of the 17 leavers with a certificate and a story book. Although the  children  have  said  ‘goodbye’  to  the  Pre-School, happily all but one will be saying ‘hello’  to  Oak  Class  in  September. Transition Day July is the time when the school also says goodbye to its Year 6 pupils, and wishes them well in the next stage of their school lives, which for most is at Haygrove School. In preparation for their move to secondary education, all the Year 6 pupils have spent time at their new schools. Some of the pupils described their transition experiences: Transition Day is very important because it is the start of a new school. Different schools went to the Transition day at Haygrove like  St  Mary’s,  Westover  Green,  Otterhampton, Wembdon and the best, Stogursey. The day started with going into the hall where we were told which group to go in and what class to go into as well. I started off with my Spanish class where we learnt Spanish sounds  and  a  phrase  ‘me  llamo’  (my  name  is)  which   is   said   like   ‘may   yamo’.     After that some teenagers guided us towards our next class, Maths, which is my favourite subject. We had a pyramid with three numbers at the bottom and we had to add them together. For lunch I had pizza, chips and beans, which tasted delicious. In the next class, Art, Mrs Chumley made us do a fake facebook description. Afterwards we went to Geography where we did a quiz about the world. We got split into two groups. One group did rounders and the other group did basketball. It ends at half four. It’s unlikely   you   won’t  have a good time, because everybody does. On my very first day at Haygrove School I was scared then I had the best day of my life and made lots of new friends. Year  6  Leavers’  Service On Monday 18th July  there  will  be    a  Leavers’  Service  in  St  Andrew’s  Church.    It  will  start  at  10am. All members of the public are invited. The  Year  Sixes  will  be  singing:  ‘When  I  grow

up,’  ‘Touch  the  Sky,  and  ‘Change  and  Grow.’    In   the   Leavers’   service,   the   Rev   Nicky   will  give out dictionaries. VACANCIES at Pre-School!

There are still some vacancies for September. And now, since the Ofsted inspection which judged the Pre-School   as   ‘Good’,  we are able to take children

from the age of 2 year 0 months. “Teaching  in  the  pre-school . . . is giving  children  a  flying  start.”       (Ofsted Report, March 2016) We are open ALL DAY on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and morning only on Tuesdays. Low-income families may be entitled to funding for their 2-3 year old children at the pre-school. For more information about joining the Pre-school or about funding, please contact the Pre-school by email at: [email protected] A message from a Year 6 leaver to all children starting at School and Pre-School in September - Stogursey School is an amazing place. People are very caring and kind and the teachers are always there to help you if you need  help.    It’s  always  fun,  we  have  amazing trips like when we went to France, Harry  Potter  World  and  to  watch  ‘Wind  in  the  Willows’.    Stogursey  School is the best school ever.

To see photos of the school events, go to ‘Latest  News’  on    the  school  website  at: http://www.stogurseyprimaryschool.co.uk/

Thank you to the ten Year 6 pupils who contributed, for their last time, to the school news. They are: Amber, Charlie, Gracie, Imi, Luke, Pip, Rowan, Sophy, Suni and Will. We wish them all the best in their new schools.
