Our Vision Statement

St Peter’s Church Leckhampton exists to love and worship God,

to serve our neighbours and to pass on the faith in Jesus Christ.

The Parish Prayer

Loving God

Open our eyes that we might see you.

Open our ears that we might hear you.

Open our hearts and minds that we

Might respond to you and bring others to know you.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ

Our Lord who lights our way.

Amen

Information

The church is now closed to all visitors. Our regular communion, prayer and worship services are being held online. For further details go to the Sunday LIVE section of our website.

However…………….Re-opening St. Peter’s for Prayer Following an extensive risk assessment, St. Peter’s has reopened for Prayer. It will be open each week, throughout the coming month, on a Saturday, from 10-12pm, and on a Tuesday, from 2-4pm, to a max. of 6 persons at any one time (this will be stewarded). This is a positive first step and one which I hope will provide us with a foundation from which to re-open further as it’s safe to do so. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to make this possible. Further thought is now being put into how we can re-open, safely and cautiously, for public worship, although this may take some time, so please bear with the team who are working on this. In the meantime, please continue to join the live-stream services from across the team at 10am each Sunday, which will start to come from our church buildings once again. Details of churches reopening for prayer: * St Peter’s From 27th June, Tuesdays 2-4pm & Saturdays 10-12pm * St Christopher’s From 29th June Mondays 2-4pm * St Stephen’s From 1st July Wednesdays 10-12pm * Emmanuel From mid-July once some internal maintenance work

has been completed.

eflections from the Curatage

“New Beginnings” Moving house is a stressful time. Sorting out address changes,

making sure the cat doesn’t run off and packing up your life in a lorry can seem like a big upheaval. We have lived in Cirencester for nine years and made some good friends and put down roots. To start afresh with two young children has proved to be quite challenging. Yet, we have come to be certain that this move is the right thing for us as a family. We have been through what could be described as a form of

grieving process, where we have said goodbye to parishioners, colleagues, school friends and neighbours. We have all fluctuated at times between being really excited and then quite apprehensive about what our future holds. We’ve all been having to face uncertainties during the pandemic. Life will change for everyone in ways we might not have predicted. We will have to say goodbye to some of our old ‘normal’ ways of doing things and that can be difficult. We may resent having to make changes and grieve for our previous lifestyles. However, I am confident that sometimes we need to let things expire before new growth can emerge. We have heard about communities coming together to look after the vulnerable and the improvement of the air quality in our cities. We must be resilient and adaptable and cultivate the good things which have come out of the crisis. Hang on in there – have faith that we will come out the other side. This bible passage sums up all our hopes for this unsettled time, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Gary writes………

Start Looking for Roads.... ‘Start looking and you’ll see roads all over the Bible’. Jesus gathered people, in places, on hillsides and around tables... but he also scattered them! From very early in the Gospels, Jesus sent his newly recruited disciples out to heal and cast out demons. They didn’t have much in the way of supplies, and in two accounts they’re sent out entirely alone. Emily Scott, a Lutheran Pastor from New York, writes the following: “Start looking and you’ll see roads all over the Bible. These solitary travellers journeyed in situations of great uncertainty, much like our own. Their destinations may have been clear, but their futures were less so. Somewhere along the way, however, they always encountered something unexpected: the astonishing presence of the sacred. Jacob, for instance, ended up in a wrestling match with God as he journeyed. A court official of the Ethiopian queen is baptized by the side of a thoroughfare. Two disciples trudging along a dusty by-way, having heard the news of Jesus’ death, find that he was walking with them all along. And Paul hears God’s voice and ends up blind on the way to Damascus. A road is an unlikely metaphor for a pandemic that has left us stuck at home. But what happens when we see ourselves as purposefully scattered – sent out on an unexpected journey, or travelling solo? In the bible, the road is often a place of desolation and isolation, but also of encounter. A road has direction; it carries us from an old life to a new one. Perhaps there’s something about being jolted away from our rituals and routines for a time that helps us see their value in new ways? We never planned to walk this path, but it’s given us a shock of clarity. At once, we are suddenly unemployed, attempting to both parent and work full time, hesitating about next year’s college plans, or fearful of illness. Shaken from our routines, many are asking new questions. Do we really need to spend hours commuting? Should work be such a priority when our parents won’t be around forever? Why not make that change we’ve dreamed of now? Societally, there’s sudden clarity as well. We see the cracks in a health care system and an economy that leaves so little margin for disaster. We can see the vast liabilities of the old life.

Instead of clamouring to go ‘back’, we can turn, and face into a future that is uncertain, but rife with possibilities to build a world that is more compassionate. There are others on the road ahead of us: the protesters who’ve flooded our streets, risking their health to call for a nation free of racist brutality. They can see a new world. The church, too, can head out on the road. Our buildings may still be locked in places, but the world beckons, aching with need for justice and restoration. What if we are not barred from the meal we long for, but simply turned towards sharing that in a different way?” I think Emily sums up some of what many of us may be feeling right now. What do we take with us on the road to the new normal, what should we leave behind? I wish I could write so eloquently!

Revd Gary.

The (continuing) Adventures of Deacon Clanger at Morning Prayer During lockdown, Nick and I have been working through the Gospel of St. Luke during Morning Prayer, which has been live streamed each weekday at 9am. Each morning we have given a short reflection on the Bible passage for the day. We will finish with Luke on 5th August and move onto the book of Acts thereafter, so do tune in. During this time, I have been accompanied by my faithful intergalactic space rodent, Deacon Clanger, or DC as he is now known. On one such morning, DC was up the tree, pretending to be Zacchaeus! (It was

actually a peace lily plant, but don’t tell him). See page 9

Zacchaeus was a ‘chief tax collector’ meaning he was responsible for a district

or region with other tax collectors answerable to him. Tax collectors were

despised by their fellow Jews. They made contracts with the Roman authorities

to collect taxes, and made sure that they also pocketed a generous commission

for themselves. If an ordinary tax collector could do well, it is easy to imagine

how well a ‘chief’ tax collector might do!

They were also seen as traitors to their own people by taking Jewish money

and giving it to the pagan Roman colonialists who were occupying their country;

so you can see how much offence Jesus would cause by sitting down and

eating with one!

Zacchaeus had heard that Jesus was in town and he was curious to ‘see’ what

Jesus was like. At this stage, it only seemed to be a kind of curiosity; he just

wanted to get a glimpse of the person whom he had heard people talking

about.

Zacchaeus was a small man, so had run on ahead and climbed into the

branches of a sycamore tree to get a better look. A sycamore tree can grow to

a height of 10 to 15 metres, with a short trunk and spreading branches, so easy

to climb and easily capable of carrying a grown man.

Did you know that Sycamore wood is also known for its antibacterial qualities?

In fact many kitchen chopping boards are made from this wood, so there may

also be a metaphorical element of ‘cleansing’ in Zacchaeus’ actions?

What Zacchaeus wasn’t prepared for was that Jesus ‘saw’ him and said,

‘Zacchaeus, come down. I want to stay in your house today.’ (Luke 19.5)

What beautiful words to someone who is a societal outcast! Jesus ‘looks’

beyond the stereotype and public image and ‘sees’ the real person. Can we

always claim to do the same with others?

Jesus then tells Zacchaeus that ‘salvation’ had come to his house.

Zacchaeus, who had originally just wanted to have an external glimpse of

Jesus, has now come to ‘see’ Jesus in a much deeper internal way. It’s a

‘seeing’ that changed his whole life, and I think DC was urging us to reflect on

that from the branches of his tree.

LIFE in all its Fullness A Message from Bishop Rachel.... Today, 22 July, is the feast of Mary Magdalene and as I celebrate the fifth anniversary of my consecration I am giving immense thanks to God for the Diocese of Gloucester. Mary Magdalene knew about life’s turbulence and living with the unexpected. She had experienced Christ’s healing, travelled with him, was at his crucifixion and then bore witness to his resurrection, so she knew about having to continually reorient herself within a new reality. After the resurrection I believe she ventured into the future with hope because amid both her tears and her laughter she had discovered that Jesus Christ is the one in whom true life is found. This is captured in those words of Christ as told by John in his gospel: ‘I have come that they may have life and have it to the full’ (John 10:10)’. Following a period of prayer and conversation that verse emerged as the heart of our diocesan LIFE vision in 2016. Through an iterative and grass roots process we discerned four themes with a number of commitments which are interwoven in the one vision. Over the past four years worshipping communities have faithfully sought to discern which aspects of the LIFE vision have resonated with what God has been doing in each local context. Opportunities and gaps have been highlighted and connections made across the themes and commitments. Whilst for all of us the last four years have brought both unexpected joys and struggles, none of us imagined that in 2020 we would be experiencing the impact of a world-wide viral pandemic. Amid the trauma, people of all ages and backgrounds have not only experienced bereavement with the death of loved ones, but also the loss of things which were familiar and valued as well as the loss of looked-forward-to events. Yet, for many people there have also been aspects of the last few months which have been life-giving, as we have all been forced to live differently. Some aspects of our LIFE vision identified in 2016 as necessary for major culture change, have seemed almost prophetic over these past few months. Worshipping communities have been living ‘new and courageous ways of worshipping in different places, which connect with more people’ as well as ‘sharing stories through digital media’. There has also been a renewed emphasis in many places on ‘enabling people to discover new depths to prayer

Page 11: August Free 2020 Parish Magazine · 2020-07-30 · August Free 2020 Parish Magazine stpetersleck.org parishofficeleckhampton@btinternet.com part of the South Cheltenham Team Ministry

- 11 -

and spiritual growth’, and as people have reflected on what it means to be the Church beyond the walls of church buildings and with a different pattern to life there has often been a greater understanding of what it means to ‘nurture confident disciples to live out their faith seven days a week.’ People have lived deeper engagement with local communities as people have sought to ‘be advocates for flourishing through initiatives which combat injustice, exclusion and isolation’ and there has been a new awareness of environmental issues. When we hear those beautiful words of Jesus in John’s gospel regarding life in all its fullness, it is easy to forget that they are set within a context of danger and potential destruction. Jesus refers to the wild animals which seek to devour, and the thief who, unlike him, breaks in to steal the sheep. In the face of potential trauma and destruction, Jesus presents himself as the shepherd who does not abandon his sheep, but who vulnerably lies as the gate across the entrance to the sheep fold with unwavering love. This sacrificial love cost Jesus Christ his life yet it was not the end of the story. Christ’s resurrection revealed love and life stronger than even death itself. As we emerge into the seasons ahead we are navigating uncharted territory and, as with any unexpected trauma, we are faced with how to survive the aftermath and rebuild, knowing that life will never be the same again and indeed the threat of repeat is a real possibility. In every sphere of life people are asking big question about the sort of people, world and communities we want to be. As the Church we don’t know what lies ahead, yet as followers of Christ we do know how the story ends and that one day God’s kingdom will be fully present on earth as in heaven. I am aware that in the present each person from the youngest to the oldest is grappling with an array of experiences and emotions, yet in it all the shepherd will not abandon us. As portrayed in Psalm 23, whether we are lying by still waters or walking through the valley of the shadow of death, Christ walks with us and the table laden with good things awaits us, The abundant love and life of the crucified, risen and ascended Christ is unchanging and hope is present in our tears of laughter and of joy. The themes we discerned together in 2016 are as pertinent as ever as we remain committed to transformation in our Leadership, opening new paths to faith with Imagination, living as adventurous followers of Jesus Christ with Faith; and living out Christ’s love and hope in our Engagement with people and places. So I want to reassure you that as we look to the next 5 years of our life together in this diocese beyond 2021 we will not be changing our LIFE vision. Unsurprisingly our seeking to join in with what God is doing has shone a

spotlight on some specific things in LIFE and there is plenty of time in the coming months to share more. However, I pray that as we look back over the past few months, taking time to recover as well as responding to the unknown changes still to come, we will continue to ponder the content of LIFE as we reflect on who and what we are being called to be as Christ’s body in our different contexts. The deanery strategic planning process begun before lockdown is all part of this. So as we move into August my prayer is that we rest and pray. Living both lament and Alleluia can be exhausting and now is a time for watching and listening for the movement of God’s Spirit as we seek to discover yet more of the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ so that we and all people may know life in all its fullness. With my thanks and prayers as ever.

The ‘Ellacombe Chimes’

Something that has been missing during lockdown has been the ringing of the church bells, not only for Sunday services and weddings but also on practice evenings. We look forward to the time when we can hear their sweet tones again. In the meantime, there is a possible solution which I came across on the internet: the Ellacombe chimes. The device was invented in 1821 by the Revd Henry Ellacombe when he was Curate at St Mary’s Church, Bitton (near Bath). His aim was allegedly to enable the bells to be chimed by one trusted person without involving a band of unruly and perhaps drunken ringers (not those at St Peter’s, of course!). It was claimed that ‘any ingenious workman’ could set it up, and the bells were always ready to be chimed ‘by man, woman, or child, or even the clergyman himself’! There are known be over 400 Ellacombe chimes in working order in the UK and at least 40 in the other parts of the world. Next year, on 26 June, there will be a worldwide celebration of the bicentenary of the invention of the apparatus. The illustration shows the frame in which the ropes would be pulled by the operator, standing before it. This is basic compared with the elaborate carillons that are to be found in Belgium and the Netherlands, for example, as well as a few places in the United Kingdom, where the carillonneur is seated and plays melodies using his fists on wooden keys. Closer to home, Gary recalls taking visitors to see the mechanism at Cirencester Parish Church, which plays a few pre-set tunes on its 12 bells. Henry Ellacombe’s name is well known as the author of books on the bells of many counties in England. I came across the mention of his invention when researching another person – the musician Robert Pearsall – who will be the subject of a little article in next month’s magazine.

Mindfulness for Life

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware in the present moment. It is not the only practice of awareness by any means but it has been and is being researched thoroughly by the health service as it has proved to help with anxiety, depression, sleep and pain management amongst other things. People of faith says it also helps them pray. Ian Bussell and John Horan will be leading a 6 week course aimed at helping you use mindfulness in every-day life. The course will be on Thursdays in September and October, 10-12 noon at St Peter’s Cottages starting on September 10th. The cost is £20. Please click this link for a booking form or email Ruth Cameron [email protected]. Further information from Ian on [email protected] or John on [email protected].

Come and Hear the Music - St Peter’s Music Festival 2020

We hope you might be pleased to read that we are planning to go ahead with the second St Peter’s Music Festival on Saturday 10th October 2020, from midday to 7pm. Depending on the circumstances we find ourselves in at the time, we shall adapt our festival accordingly. We very much hope to have some live performances throughout the day and hope that we will also be able to safely accommodate an audience. In addition we shall livestream the whole event so it is available to those who cannot attend, or to everybody, if it proves impossible to have a live audience. So we would encourage you not to strike it out of your diaries! However we have to ask for understanding about the need for flexibility as to the exact format, which won’t be known until nearer the time. We hope to raise much needed funds for a charity called ‘MusicSpace’. This charity provides music therapy for children and adults throughout the south west region. Like many charities, MusicSpace has had to adapt to recent events and needs funds as much as ever to enable vital work with vulnerable people to continue. We are really excited at the possibility of a day with as much live music as is possible, and for the opportunity to come together in a way that can be enjoyable and safe for everyone.

Room 101 ? OMG. I hate clichés! Many of you guys know I hate the misuse of the word grab. Why do waiting staff offer to grab me a menu or grab me some cutlery? I’m like, why can’t they collect it nicely? Then when you’ve placed your order you’re told it’s no problem! Good. It shouldn’t be. As churchwarden I showed an electrician where the fusebox was. I’m still not sure whether the fusebox was awesome, or whether the fact that I knew where it is was awesome, or whether he was referring to me personally! But awesome it was! Or why when I was asked my name over the phone the reply was fantastic! Knowing my name is not that much of an achievement. It makes you sick as a parrot. Which brings me to football. No, the team didn’t open their account. They scored a goal. Then they missed the goal, not the ball hit the woodwork. So, why, at this point in time, is it common practice to start an answer with So…. and when a TV presenter asks a question where ‘yes’ would suffice, the answer is invariably ‘absolutely, very much so’. I suppose they might be thinking outside the box. You might turn round and say you disagree with me, but then I’d turn round, and you’d turn round, but at the end of the day when all is said and done - in these unprecedented times I’d still be a grumpy old man. I’ll just go and grab a coffee! LOL

The PCC cannot endorse any particular company, but I can draw your attention to the following. Ecclesiastical Insurance have extended their Trust130 scheme to 31st December 2020, which means that if you take out a Home insurance policy with them they will donate £130 to an Anglican church of your choice. It can be any Anglican church, but of course we hope you would choose St Peter’s!

Because of the current coronavirus crisis the Parish Magazine will not be printed or delivered because of lockdown, and as many of the distributors fall into the ‘at risk’ age group it would not be fair, or sensible, to expect them to venture out unnecessarily.

Parish Giving Scheme

A great way to support St. Peter’s is through the parish giving scheme, which enables you to give, and for St. Peter’s to receive, a monthly donation towards the mission and ministry of the church and parish. This is administered through the Diocese of Gloucester, so every penny comes back to St. Peter’s and is gift-aided also. This provides the church with a regular income and a means with which to plan ahead. It is especially important in ‘times like these’ when services, bookings and income are reduced. For further information, email Peter Marlow: [email protected] or check the Stewardship page of the church website: www.stpetersleck.org.

You can now enrol in the Parish Giving Scheme by phoning 0333 002 1271 to set up a regular donation. All you need is your bank account details and our parish code LKPT.

While the Church is closed you can also support St. Peter’s by making an online donation at: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/7930.
