Standards for Excellence Series

Standards for Excellence is a national program taught across the country. Funders are starting to ask if nonprof-its have graduated from this program because it is a leading authority on ethics and accountability in the nonprofit sector.

This series teaches best practices in the areas of mission and pro-gram, public affairs and public policy, governing body, conflict of interest, human resources, financial and legal, public accountability and fundraising.

Cost:Members: $500 (Includes 2 attendees per session)Non-Members: $1,000 (Includes 2 attendees per session) Standards graduate organizations: $250 (Includes 1 attendee per session)

The foundation of the Standards

for Excellence program is the

published Standards for

Excellence: An Ethics and

Accountability Code for the

Nonprofit Sector. It identifies 8

major areas of nonprofit

governance and management,

contains 55 implementation

goals, and provides a structured

approach to building capacity,

accountability, and

sustainability in your

organization.

Each organization taking

Standards for Excellence for the

first time can send two people

to each of the four sessions,

preferably the

Executive Director and

the Board Chair. Special

circumstances prohibiting this

to take place may be presented

and are approved on a case by

case basis. All four sessions must

be attended by both participants

to graduate and be added to the

graduation list on the Center’s

website.

Description:You’ve always known that a troublesome employee can sap energy from an organiza-tion and reduce everyone’s overall performance. As the saying goes, “One bad apple spoils the bunch” so it’s important to recognize rotting fruit before its negative impact spreads. In this training you’ll learn how to identify signs that an employee or team is beginning to rot and the proactive steps to stop it, as well as real strategies on dealing with an employee who has sprouted into a full-fledged problem.

Bob Spinks, Professor and Director, MA Program in Applied Sociology - Nonprofit Leadership

Description:You serve your community by being an active member of a nonprofit board, especially one about whose work you are passionate. But, there is also the responsibility of being accountable for the organization’s work. Perhaps no area of board responsibility strikes greater fear in the hearts of nonprofit volunteers than the annual review and approval of your organization’s submission of Form 990, the so-called nonprofit “tax return”. Yet, short of a root canal, you can think of nothing that excites you less than a session to learn about this daunting document and what you as a board member must do with it.

DO WE HAVE A DEAL FOR YOU!! This session will demystify IRS Form 990 and the many changes that have been made in it over the past few years. More importantly, we’ll help you clearly understand what a nonprofit leader must know about this seem-ingly unfriendly form.

Instructors:

Senator Holt:State Senator David Holt represents the 30th District of Oklahoma. At the time of his 2010 election, David had already served a U.S. President, a U.S. House Speaker, a Lt. Governor, and members of Congress. In the Senate, David has fought for a limited and transparent state government, while passing almost 40 pieces of conservative legislation into law. He currently serves as a Majority Whip. David is a licensed attorney and has served as an adjunct professor at Oklahoma City University.

Captain Fairchild:Captain Brent A. Fairchild is a Special Agent In-Charge with the Oklahoma Alcoholic Beverage Laws Enforcement Commission (ABLE). He holds a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice Management and Administration. Fairchild has served as a DPS Communications Officer, DPS Capitol Patrolman, ABLE Agent I, II, Senior Agent, Lieutenant, and Captain. He has previously served on the Western Heights Safe Schools Board and currently is a 2nd term Board Member on the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System.

Like a personal exercise regimen, developing a strong and stable board requires dis-cipline, perseverance and hard work. Effective boards understand and embrace this. You don’t have to break a sweat if you recognize board struggles and figure out the right exercises to transform your board, relationships and the overall organization. The old adage “calories in, calories out” also relates to nonprofit boards. Being strategic and intentional with proven advice, practical tips and effective techniques can improve board interactions so the mission becomes more important than any one individual or relationship. Join us for this interactive session that may require some heavy lifting but the rewards will be worth the effort. Description:

Challenges and Benefits of Building Broad-based Community Collaborations. We will address specific social needs using examples from the homeless Alliances work with 100 or so government, faith-based, and nonprofit organizations working with the homeless in Oklahoma. I will share two concrete examples to illustrate a collaboration developed to address a focused, specific, short-term issue, and a longer term, broader collaborative developed to address a community issue.

Founded in 1981 as “The Support Center of Oklahoma” by Pat and Ray Potts, the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits seeks to strengthen the leadership and management capacity of nonprofit organizations in the state of Oklahoma by providing training, advocacy and guidance to “build better communities through effective nonprofits.” Currently, the Center facilitates workshops, didactic training, embedded consultation and the industry’s definitive capacity building and training program, the Standards for Excellence Series. In addition, the Center operates a membership and advocacy program to provide member organizations with a singular voice on nonprofit legislative issues including charitable giving, services to constituents and economic development, as well as providing valuable member benefits such as discounts on services, trainings and technology.

Today the Center’s primary strategies include providing training programs, forums and conferences to equip nonprofits with the knowledge and education they need to improve service to their respective communities. In keeping with its mission, the Center strives through programs and member benefits to deliver resources that increase nonprofit management skills and bolster efficacy of those organizations to ensure that Oklahoma nonprofits have the highest levels of transparency and efficiency regionally and nationally. The Center became the first organization in Oklahoma to be awarded the Standards for Excellence Institute Seal. This achievement highlights the organization’s leadership among the nation’s nonprofit sector. The Center is a member of the National Council of Nonprofits.
