Dear Carolina Faculty:

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome each of you to the University of South Carolina! Shelly and I look forward to getting to know you.

South Carolina is a university on the move. We encourage our more than 34,000 students to pursue high goals while aiming for academic excellence and meaningful community engagement.

Our faculty members continue to lead our university on a path of growing momentum and impressive gains. We have made remarkable progress, and with your addition I am confident we will achieve even more.

After all, it’s the people who make our university a meaningful place. That is why we are dedicated to building an inclusive and inspiring community for our students, faculty and staff. Welcome to the University of South Carolina!

The Office of the Provost sponsors this welcome and orientation session to help all new UofSC faculty make a smooth, enjoyable transition to the university. Meet your colleagues and learn about faculty resources, UofSC students and university support for teaching and research.

Information Tables

You will have the opportunity to find out more about the university at Information Tables where representatives from a variety of university offices will be available to answer questions and give helpful information. Please take your Passport to Prizes to at least five tables and have representatives sign it to qualify to enter our door prize drawings.

Lunch Ambassadors

Lunch Ambassadors are successful faculty and Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) professional staff who are available during lunch to share information about their valuable experiences along with services that CTE offers to new faculty, such as New Faculty Academy and other university programs.

Historic UofSC Horseshoe Walking Tour

The Great Biscuit Rebellion. The 1902 Carolina Clemson Riot. The Gamecock 505. These stories and more are part of the University of South Carolina Historic Horseshoe Tour offered by the South Caroliniana Library. University Archivist Elizabeth Cassidy West leads the tour around the historic horseshoe, sharing tales of events and student life that occurred there. If you are interested in taking the tour, please meet in front of room 122 at 3:45.

Opportunities Beyond New Faculty Orientation

New Faculty Community Engagement Tour

The Center for Teaching Excellence, in partnership with Historic Columbia Foundation and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, invites new faculty to participate in the UofSC New Faculty Community Engagement Tour. New faculty are invited to take a guided bus tour of Columbia with James Quint, Director of Education, Historic Columbia Foundation, on Friday, November 1, 2019. You’ll get to learn more about your new city and find out about community engagement initiatives at the university. See sc.edu/cte to register.

New Faculty Academy

You’re invited to participate in New Faculty Academy. An initiative of the Office of the Provost, this program offers a monthly series of mentoring and networking workshops throughout the academic year. Faculty members who attend six or more NFA sessions during the year will receive a certificate of completion, a letter of commendation and recognition on the Center for Teaching Excellence website. Please note that attendance at New Faculty Orientation counts towards the New Faculty Academy certificate. See sc.edu/cte for more information.

Certificates of Completion

The Center for Teaching Excellence in partnership with other university offices offers a selection of certificates of completion for faculty, instructors and teaching graduate students. Certificates offered include Fostering Proactive Learning Environments, Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence, and, coming in spring 2020, an Integrative and Experiential Learning certificate.

Oktoberbest: A Celebration of Teaching

The tenth annual Oktoberbest: A Celebration of Teaching will be held Friday, October 18 at the Russell House University Union. Join UofSC faculty, instructors and graduate teaching assistants from across UofSC campuses for this free one-day symposium focused on sharing best practices in teaching. Attendance at Oktoberbest counts towards the New Faculty Academy certificate.

Educational Technology Showcase

The Educational Technology Showcase is an exciting forum spotlighting the latest in higher education technology used for teaching and learning. UofSC faculty and other experts from around the country presentation on how they are creatively using educational technology in and beyond their classrooms to improve student learning. The showcase will be held in spring 2020.

Description: At the University of South Carolina, Columbia, all 27,000+ undergraduate students must be advised every semester in order to register for classes. As such, UofSC employs over 150 full-time academic advisors whose primary responsibility is meeting with students and advising them on curricular requirements and co-curricular opportunities. In addition, approximately 500 faculty serve as academic advisors. This session will provide attendees with an overview of our university’s advisement model including our campus-wide first-year advising program, advising technologies such as DegreeWorks degree audit, advisor training, student communication, and major mapping. Setting a Tone for Active Learning (Room 124) Nate Carnes, Associate Director, Center for Teaching Excellence

Description: Activities on the first day of class can leave an impression on students for the duration of the semester. Furthermore, guidelines for university/college teaching call for a greater emphasis on active learning. What is active learning, then? In what ways might an instructor incorporate it into their course? During this session, participants will explore responses to these questions and consider a class activity that sets a tone for active learning throughout the semester. Description: The Student Success Center (SSC) is dedicated to promoting student learning and development by supporting your efforts in the classroom. We provide a number of programs that promote academic success and foster engagement between our faculty and students. This session will focus on the Student Success Center resources that are available to you and your students and provide you with information on how to refer a student to the SSC if they need academic assistance. The SSC staff will showcase our Success Connect initiative in which faculty can submit alerts on behalf of students to the SSC for academic support at any time during the semester. Description: Get a quick introduction to UofSC Columbia’s unique collections and find out who your subject librarian is. Description: In this session, you will learn about course design for teaching online or face-to-face. In addition, for those teaching online, you will learn about the resources available to help you develop and deliver a high quality online course. In this session, we will discuss research on lectures, active learning techniques, and incorporating active learning into lectures in both online and face-to-face environments. New Faculty Academy

LAUNCH YOUR CAREERWill you be a new full-time faculty member at the University of South Carolina in 2019–2020? Are you eager to get your career at the university off to a successful start? Would you like to meet colleagues from across campus and learn about the resources UofSC offers to support your research, teaching and service? If so, New Faculty Academy (NFA) is designed for you.

An initiative of the Office of the Provost, NFA offers a series of networking, professional development and mentoring activities for faculty during their first year on campus. All new full-time faculty members on the UofSC Columbia campus are eligible and encouraged to participate.

WORKSHOP SERIESNFA 2019-2020 begins with New Faculty Orientation, followed by monthly workshops and gatherings throughout the academic year. New faculty will receive credit towards the NFA certificate for attending these workshops.

NFA workshops are led by top UofSC administrators and faculty who address topics such as navigating the tenure process,

best practices in teaching, research and community engagement opportunities at UofSC, work-life balance, student support resources, career planning and more. Each NFA session also includes opportunities for informal networking and conversation.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMFaculty members who attend six or more NFA sessions during the year will receive a certificate of completion, a letter of commendation and recognition on the Center for Teaching Excellence website. NFA graduation ceremonies will be Friday, April 17, 2020.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOUThe Center for Teaching Excellence is the university’s one-stop resource for faculty professional development. In addition to our NFA workshops, CTE offers a full slate of workshops on topics related to all facets of pedagogy. We also offer grants, short courses, symposiums, communities of practice, and one-on-one course design consultations for face-to-face, online and hybrid courses. Keynote Speaker Our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Robert Branch, a professor of Learning, Design, and Technology at the University of Georgia, and the Head of the Department of Career and Information Studies. Dr. Branch co-authored the book, Survey of Instructional Design

Models. He is also the author of Instructional Design: The ADDIE Approach. Dr. Branch emphasizes student-centered learning and teaches courses related to message design.

Call for ProposalsHave you found innovative ways to engage students, foster active learning, present course content or involve students in activities beyond the classroom? Oktoberbest is an opportunity to think of all the strategies you use in your teaching and select the most effective and innovative ones you want to share with others. We encourage all UofSC faculty and graduate teaching assistants to submit a proposal for a workshop or poster presentation that demonstrates innovative teaching.
