Welcome!! Welcome!!

With ratings of 8 of 10 from SPIN and 4 stars from URB, The Cool Kids full length explodes out ofChicago with some great collaborations and the CD has three tracks that will not be available dig-itally. It’s truly amazing what happens When Fish Ride Bicycles.

Album number four from Caspar Babypants (aka Chris Ballew of The Presidents of the UnitedStates of America), SING ALONG! aims straight for the heart of every child of any age with guestappearances by Weird Al, Stone G from Pearl Jam and Pete Droge (The Thorns). User Directions:Dig it; drop it on any single digit aged youth; stand back and observe; FUN ensues.

Who’s the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the WORLD right now? According to MOJO magazine, it isThe Jim Jones Revue. We believe. JJR tours the US in September: prepare to be carried backwards tothe time when Rock Really Rolled but updated in a 2011 kinda way. Burning Your House Down is an

apt description of the havoc they will wreak upon your brain.

Lotsa VINYL big and small in August starting with the LP component of the Pokey LaFarge CD fromlast month along with another half dozen titles including the aforementioned Jim Jones Revue.

It’s a simple fact that we at Burnside loved Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags. Two years after hisway-too-early-in-life passing, the band is releasing a double CD of the songs that were not finishedat that point. Many studio hours have produced this stellar final testament to the Beach Boys meetthe Flying Burrito Brothers vision and sound from SB&SD.

And we’d like to welcome the Bladen County Records label into the Burnside fold. A dozen of theirtitles are available from this five year old Portland-based label.

And so much more---your friends at bdc

The Burnside Distribution Team.

Caspar Babypants, SING ALONG!SING ALONG! is the 4th album by Seattle kids entertainer Caspar Babypants. Pokey LaFarge and the River City Three, Middle of EverywhereThis is the LP version of Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three’s newest recording, a most inspired 21stcentury creation. Middle of Everywhere represents the latest addition to a growing eminence in contemporaryAmerican roots music, and LaFarge is definitely paving the way. He and his crew don’t just pay homage to theirartistic forbears here – they commandeer their legacies and create something new—and with Midwesterncountry blues mashed with Western swing, sweet harmony vocals, and hints of New Orleans style horns andlap steel throughout, the title Middle of Everywhere is particularly fitting. LaFarge has always had the grace, charm, and flair of the musicians of long ago, but Middle of Everywhere shows just how much of a musical forcehe is, and how much command he possesses as he steps out with accordant confidence.

Speed the Plough, ShineSpeed the Plough have been playing and singing together since 1984. Featuring a revolving lineup that has oftenfeatured as many as nine members, the band has been a critical part of the New Jersey indie rock history, sprouting from the same scene that spawned The Feelies, Yo La Tengo, and The Bongos. From their early daysas The Trypes to their latest reincarnation, the band’s brand of rustic songwriting incorporates elements of folk, rock, psychedelia and jazz to create a comfortable, friendly musical quilt.

Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags, We Will Be Forgotten 2 CD SetTwo years after the death of their eponymous songwriter/frontman, Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags havereleased their magnum opus, We Will Be Forgotten. They had just begun work on this double album when,in September 2008, Barr was diagnosed with cancer. While the band made as much progress on the album aspossible, when Barr passed away a year later, less than half of the intended work was finished. With enoughmaterial for one good album, the remaining band members could have stopped then. Instead, they forged on;with a magnificent realization of Barr’s vision. The sound elicits comparisons to Wilco, The Beach Boys, andGram Parsons; the songs evoke a lifetime of experience.

Sanders Bohlke, Quiet Ye Voices / The Weight of UsOxford, Mississippi’s Sanders Bohlke has shared stages with artists such as Badly Drawn Boy, Tom Morelloand Gomez and, along the way, compiled an impressive collection of songs that, in an unusual move, have beenreleased as EP’s and digital singles. Recorded in between friends’ studios and his grandmother’s basement, tracks such as “The Weight Of Us” (which you may have heard in a film or two) and “Quiet Ye Voices” are farfrom uniform but alike in their diversion from his earlier work -- the tone is darker, the instrumentation morecomplex, and his voice a rich wonder of gauzy soul. Beautiful artwork / Includes download.

Flatfoot 56, Black ThornFlatfoot 56’s third label-backed studio effort, Black Thorn, is a rollicking barrage of Celtic punk and folk-tingedhardcore straight from the streets of the South Side of Chicago. Produced by the Street Dogs‚ Johnny Rioux -Black Thorn tightly packs the quartet’s eclectic and driving musical charge into thirteen tracks that celebrate thepride of the working class and their Chicago roots. As cathartic as it is ambitious, Black Thorn is an emphaticassault that remains vintage Flatfoot in its effortless combination of Celtic instrumentation and street cornerpunk rock. Bagpipes and mandolins remain just as vital as drums and guitars in defining Flatfoot’s sound. Thebeautifully packaged digipak CD features an 8-panel insert and stunning artwork.THIS IS A RE-RELEASE ON A NEW LABEL (SEE DELETION OF PREVIOUS VERSION, PAGE 14).

Appetite, Scattered Smothered CoveredEarly in the first track on Scattered Smothered Covered, the new album by Appetite, Teddy Briggs sings, “songs keepwriting themselves” and the resulting collection of music seems to do exactly that. It’s a testament to the sense ofmusical ease and fluency this 27-year-old Californian creates with this record. Originally conceived as a project to,as Briggs simply puts it, “try and make songs all by myself,” Appetite has, on this new disc, flourished, conjuringsongs buoyed by a spirit that vibrates with the influences of downtempo electronica, hip-hop, Tropicalia, andthe far-reaching sonics of Can, early Mercury Rev, and certain shades of Beck. These are songs that reveallayers upon layers for the headphone listener or just provide a nice bed of gorgeous sound for you to rest upon.

Glambilly, White BBQ SauceWhat’s in a name? Glambilly delivers all its moniker implies: Americana with style, sass and flair, country musicthat is truly cool and contemporary, genuine roots that rocks’n’rolls with flash and fury. Hailed by the AustinChronicle as “wicked cool” and “pure rock-roots, not the other way around,” the San Antonio, TX trio rip it uprighteously on White BBQ Sauce. Led by singer/songwriter/ bassist Hans Frank, also an award winning playwrightand true hillbilly renaissance man, the trio also features hot guitar slinger “Dangerous” Danny Aaron from Texashard rock heroes Dangerous Toys. The band’s Saustex label debut includes three tunes also cut by Frank’sacclaimed major label country band, 10 City Run, revised to live up to their full Glambilly glory. “Think JohnnyCash hopped up on pills and simultaneously carjacking both ZZ Top and White Zombie,” says Texas Music. Or asTexas Music Times raves, “On a scale of 1 to 10, Glambilly goes to 11.”

The Great Book of John, The Great Book of JohnThe Great Book of John is led by Taylor Shaw — founding guitarist of Birmingham Alabama’s Wild Sweet Orange.Shaw’s music is eminently lyrical – recalling Jeff Buckley’s psychedelic soul, Leonard Cohen’s poetic (andlacerating) wordplay, and fiery fretwork influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn and David Gilmour as much as it isby Radiohead. The Great Book of John is a deeply-layered production brimming with amplified crunch and a thick, somnambulant atmosphere provided by Remy Zero’s Jeffery Cain and Grammy-winning engineer Darrell Thorp(Radiohead, Beck, Outkast).

The Hunting Accident, The Hunting AccidentIf you’ve heard of Piebald or Arlo then you have heard Travis Shettel, Aaron Stuart, and Nate Greely in theirspunk-filled youth. Arlo made records for Sub Pop in 2001 and 2002, and compared them to Sloan and ThePosies. They toured across the U.S., Europe, and Japan, with Foo Fighters, The Shins, The Walkmen, and Rilo Kiley. They became very popular in Japan but broke up in 2004. Meanwhile, on the east coast, Aaron and Travis werein band called Piebald, playing shows with Jimmy Eat World, Jejeune, Saves The Day, Dinosaur Jr. and in 2008broke up. Their new venture came to fruition in Los Angeles during 2009, recruiting Pete Beeman (Burning Brides)on drums and Ryan Jebavy (Nighttime) on keys, and formed The Hunting Accident.

Drew Grow & the Pastors Wives, Drew Grow & the Pastors WivesAcross the globe, there are hundreds of young men and women who have taken up acoustic guitars, inspired bythe grand folk and country tradition, and set about put their sleeve-worn hearts into musical form. But the resultis often feather light and wispy and all too easily forgotten amid the din of the modern age. Not so with the musicof Drew Grow and the Pastors Wives. The music on the band’s self-titled album shares the influence of manycurrent indie artists, but carries with much more meat and gristle to chew on. It feels like it was molded after along life of ups and downs, all set a soundtrack of the curlicued songwriting of Bob Dylan, the drowsy despairof Bill Callahan/Smog, and a thick stack of dusty Motown and Stax 45s.

Luther Russell, The Invisible AudienceLuther Russell releases his 5th album entitled The Invisible Audience. It’s a wildly ambitious record from themulti-talented singer-songwriter/producer, and the 25 tracks on this epic record were culled from months ofrecording. His last release, 2007’s Repair (produced by Ethan Johns) was a ragged, rootsy pop record full of rich, sometimes bouncy melodies which belied their darker subject matter, namely that of his then-fresh divorce. Thealbum won him quite a bit of acclaim but nonetheless failed to break him to a wider audience. Since then he con-centrated on the production side of things, working with a wide array of artists, including Noah & The Whale,Laura Marling, Sarabeth Tucek, Holly Miranda, Richmond Fontaine, Sean Lennon and Fernando, to name a few.

Kelli Schaefer, Ghost of the BeastOnce in a great while, a voice comes along that turns a casual bystander into a listener. It interrupts barconversations, turns heads, and convinces the room to pay attention because this singer certainly has somethingunique to say. Kelli Schaefer is a hurricane. In fact, Schaefer might identify more with early punk music than withcurrent Portland neo-folkies. Still, she leaves some room for beauty and patience - and this dichotomy is evidentthrough the 42 minutes of her debut full-length release, Ghost of the Beast. It’s rock music that encouragesdeep concentration as much as it does a slow roll of your hips; pop music that leaves a bittersweet after-taste; folk music meant for a dark nightclub instead of your local coffeehouse.

Comas, ComasTranslating from Irish/Gaelic as POWER, Comas provide their own driving power coupled with a fine sensitivityfor the inner strands of magic that is inherent in Irish music. Fiddle player Aidan Burke comes into his own, delving deep into his Irish roots to pluck out a pure sound that transcends time and place and guaranteed totouch any lover of Celtic music. Aidan’s dexterity is evenly matched by the awesome talents of Sylvain Barou(flutes, pipes), Philip Masure (Guitar) and Jackie Moran (percussion). Comas are a band firmly rooted inIrish music, but with enough space to allow in original compositions. Open to new influences, but with arespectful eye on the past is what brings Comas to the fore-front of what traditional music is about today.

Oax, This Distance CD EPAfter four years of heavy touring with Bishop Allen and The Rosebuds, and while coping with a punishing breakup, Giorgio Angelini was back in his home of Houston, TX. Starting as an open-ended hiatus from music and aventure into graduate school at Rice, it didn’t take long before he started writing again. He took shelter in hishome studio and produced an EP. This Distance is both an airing of grievances and a testifying of sins.In addition to the break-up, he also lost his long-time musical collaborator. Distance is, indeed, a killer. Oax isthe result. Oax will be performing this summer in Texas and NYC with a backing band including members ofThe Heartless Bastards.

Gay Ghost, Gay GhostGay Ghost are an American Rock/Alternative/Pop trio based in Portland, Oregon. They were formed in2010 by front man Joe Mormann (guitar/vocals) from the ashes of his previous group, The Glib. With writing, arrangement, recording, and production help from the band’s drummer/vocalist Geoff Schlemm, the band recent-ly finished recording their self-titled debu. Since bassist/vocalist Kristen McKenzie joined the band late into therecording process, only one track on the record features her bass and backup vocals. The album has a raw, buttight power trio sound with poppy, reverberated vocals.

The Love Language, The Love LanguageThe Love Language is an Indie Pop band from NC whose debut is a story of redemption. In 2007, Stu Mclambgot drunk, trashed his band’s practice space, broke his wrist, and the band showed him the door. He movedto Winston Salem “with a girl I thought was the love of my life but felt absolutely miserable.” Stu reflects, “Wehad unhealthy tendencies like throwing beer bottles at the wall when we fought.” Six months later, they call itquits. Stu pounds a fifth of Aristocrat and wakes up in solitary. Shocked by the shit he’d landed himself in,McLamb sobered up, moved again, worked hard at a hotel---songs started appearing and he begantracking the first Love Language album.

The Builders and The Butchers, The Builders and The ButchersOver the five year history of The Builders and the Butchers, from their beginnings playing on rainy Portlandstreets for the random passersby, to the last three years of endless touring, the band has lived and died for itsconnection with the audience. Whether playing bar gigs for 50 people or opening arena shows for 3000, the bandstrives to connect with the audience every time they take the stage. It’s that, beyond anything else, that keepsthe Builders going. They’ve toured with Heartless Bastards, Portugal. The Man, Amanda Palmer, and MurderBy Death, to name a few. Their heavy tour schedule began in January of 2011 and the band will likely per-form at more than 250 venues this year.
