Drew Grow & the Pastors Wives, Drew Grow & the Pastors WivesAcross the globe, there are hundreds of young men and women who have taken up acoustic guitars, inspired bythe grand folk and country tradition, and set about put their sleeve-worn hearts into musical form. But the resultis often feather light and wispy and all too easily forgotten amid the din of the modern age. Not so with the musicof Drew Grow and the Pastors Wives. The music on the band’s self-titled album shares the influence of manycurrent indie artists, but carries with much more meat and gristle to chew on. It feels like it was molded after along life of ups and downs, all set a soundtrack of the curlicued songwriting of Bob Dylan, the drowsy despairof Bill Callahan/Smog, and a thick stack of dusty Motown and Stax 45s.

Luther Russell, The Invisible AudienceLuther Russell releases his 5th album entitled The Invisible Audience. Kelli Schaefer, Ghost of the BeastOnce in a great while, a voice comes along that turns a casual bystander into a listener. It interrupts barconversations, turns heads, and convinces the room to pay attention because this singer certainly has somethingunique to say. Kelli Schaefer is a hurricane. In fact, Schaefer might identify more with early punk music than withcurrent Portland neo-folkies. Still, she leaves some room for beauty and patience - and this dichotomy is evidentthrough the 42 minutes of her debut full-length release, Ghost of the Beast. It’s rock music that encouragesdeep concentration as much as it does a slow roll of your hips; pop music that leaves a bittersweet after-taste; folk music meant for a dark nightclub instead of your local coffeehouse.

Brian McNeill, The Road Never QuestionsThis year Brian McNeill celebrates the 40th year of a career that has established him as one of the mostacclaimed forces in Scottish music. Gay Ghost, Gay GhostGay Ghost are an American Rock/Alternative/Pop trio based in Portland, Oregon. They were formed in2010 by front man Joe Mormann (guitar/vocals) from the ashes of his previous group, The Glib. With writing,arrangement, recording, and production help from the band’s drummer/vocalist Geoff Schlemm, the band recent-ly finished recording their self-titled debu. Since bassist/vocalist Kristen McKenzie joined the band late into therecording process, only one track on the record features her bass and backup vocals. The album has a raw, buttight power trio sound with poppy, reverberated vocals.

The Love Language, The Love LanguageThe Love Language is an Indie Pop band from NC whose debut is a story of redemption. In 2007, Stu Mclambgot drunk, trashed his band’s practice space, broke his wrist, and the band showed him the door. He movedto Winston Salem “with a girl I thought was the love of my life but felt absolutely miserable.” Stu reflects, “Wehad unhealthy tendencies like throwing beer bottles at the wall when we fought.” Six months later, they call itquits. Stu pounds a fifth of Aristocrat and wakes up in solitary. Shocked by the shit he’d landed himself in,McLamb sobered up, moved again, worked hard at a hotel---songs started appearing and he begantracking the first Love Language album.

The Builders and The Butchers, The Builders and The ButchersOver the five year history of The Builders and the Butchers, from their beginnings playing on rainy Portlandstreets for the random passersby, to the last three years of endless touring, the band has lived and died for itsconnection with the audience. Whether playing bar gigs for 50 people or opening arena shows for 3000, the bandstrives to connect with the audience every time they take the stage. It’s that, beyond anything else, that keepsthe Builders going. They’ve toured with Heartless Bastards, Portugal.The Man, Amanda Palmer, and MurderBy Death, to name a few. Their heavy tour schedule began in January of 2011 and the band will likely per-form at more than 250 venues this year.
