It’s crazy to think that summer is almost over and that we all have to head back to school, but you guys should at least get excited for some CKI fun! Our club has so many differ- ent service opportunities, so get ready to jump back in and volun- teer at JMU and in the Harrison- burg community. I’m so excited to be your fellowship VP and I’m looking forward to planning various social events so we can all get to know each other better. As a club, we definitely love to serve together, but we also love to have fun! If you have any suggestions for exciting socials, please let me know so I can incorporate your ideas. ServiceVolunteering at the Rockingham

County Fair

Caitlin Francis

When I was asked to volunteer for the Rockingham County Fair back in April, I said yes without giving it much thought. I knew I would be available for the dates CKI needed volunteers and I enjoy helping others. After working for the majority of the week in the Kiwanis concessions booth at the fair, it is safe to say I enjoyed the experi-ence and gained a lot more from it than I expected. First and foremost, I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to work alongside fellow members of the Kiwanis family. We CKIers got to work with some Key Clubbers (our high school equivalent) and made some really cool connections we hope will last into the coming school year. They asked about what we did in CKI and we got learn a little about their projects in Key Club. Hopefully, through these new connections, we can build a stronger relationship and work more with other members of the Kiwanis family. We also had the opportunity to meet some of our community’s influential Kiwan-ians. They really enjoyed our help and were extremely interested in all of the projects we are doing within the JMU and greater Harrisonburg communities. For me per-sonally, someone who has never really had the opportunity to interact with our older counterparts within the Kiwanis family, it was really enlightening to see where this organization can take someone after college. It is really nice to see that the same spirit

and intentions that drew me into the CKI family freshmen year exists beyond college. It makes me really excited for further op-portunities to work with the Kiwanians in the future. Another really great part of work-ing at the fair was getting to explain to some of our customers what the Kiwanis family is and what we are all about. Dis-cussing my favorite parts of being a mem-ber of Circle K while selling sodas, pizza, corndogs, and snow cones was a lot more fun than I expected it to be, and our cus-tomers were very interested and supportive of what we were doing. It was really reward-ing to see the immediate effects of what we were doing within the community. Working at the fair came with some other, somewhat less noble perks as well. Working a concession booth right next to the main stage meant we were able to attend the major events and concerts without paying full price for the entertain-ment. My favorite example was getting to hear Luke Bryan’s concert and meeting some of the band members throughout the night. But it was also very entertain-ing to see bull ridding and the demolition derby. It was a lot of fun and I would not have had those experiences had I not been working with the Kiwanis family. This volunteer project is one I hope CKI will continue to participate in within the near future and I would defi-nitely encourage our members to consider partaking in this volunteer experience if they are able. It is absolutely worth giving up a couple days of your summer and you gain much out of the experience.

Questions for our President

How long have you been apart of the Kiwanis Family?

This year will be my eigth year apart of the Kiwanis Family. I participated in Key Club all four years in high school and all four years in Circle K.

How many times have you worked the fair?

This will be my sister Emily and mine second summer working with Kiwanis at the Rockingham County Fair. We have been so looking forward to volunteering for them again.

What is your favorite part of the fair?

Hanging out with the Kiwanis members as well as Key Club members. I also love the fair atmo-sphere as well meeting the residence of Rockingham County.

What was your favorite ani-mal at the fair?

Besides Maddie the Moose? The dairy cows would have to be my favorite.

Favorite thing about CKI: “My favorite thing about CKI is when they volunteer at the fair and come by to pay me a visit.”

Bunny got this award for being the cutest animal at the fair. He was very friendly to visitors and was very sweet.
