During NAIDOC Week members of Taribelang Bunda, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang and Bailai tribes joined with other interested members of the community to highlight the importance of culturally significant artefacts.
The event was held at the Bundaberg and District Historical Museum, where many artefacts are kept. This special NAIDOC event explained the cultural significance of the Port Curtis Coral Coast region and
that the history is rich and to be kept safe so it can be to be told to one and all. Even though artefacts are housed in the Bundaberg museum, community support is being sought so that the artefacts can have a ‘Keeping Place’ of their own.
Once all the speeches and talks had finished, attendees were treated to Kanga Bangas and Kangaroo Curry and rice and then went onto enjoy some boomerang throwing, weaving and other traditional activities.

July has come and gone with not much to show for it on the fishing front. The first half it rained and rained and rained. The sun finally came out the day before the new moon on the 18th, but just to spoil the party we had winds 15 to 20 knots. With the winds one direction and tides in the other direction, it made for frustrating fishing.
A bloke named John at the town reach boat ramp put me onto what he called a parachute anchor! He uses his out the back of his tinnie after he has dropped his main anchor, so I bought one and fair dinkum
i t works a treat keeps the boat straight and perfect with the tide run, it also works a treat when drifting for Flatties. It looks like a canvas bucket with a hole in the end, they come in different sizes to suit your size boat, just drop it over the front of your boat on the drift and out the back at anchor, one bloke told me he uses a bucket the same way.
Talking to some fishermen that did get out on a couple of reasonable days, they reported good catches of Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Black Kings, Snapper and some good runs of Spanish Mackerel. But the reports where, that as much as they all like fishing, it was an uncomfortable time.
For those that ventured into the rivers and creeks it was a hit and miss for July. In the Burnett the Bream was reported to be schooling and not too interested in feeding. Those that were hooked were of good quality and size. Best baits used were Mullet strips and Mullet
gut, plus yabbies. Best places to fish were close into the rock walls.Whiting are still about, mainly on worms and Yabbies, though you will have to search for them in the shallows
mainly on a making tide. Flathead are also pretty thin on the ground, fish mainly in the shallows, long strips of whiting have been working
well so has four to six inch plastic Gulps in white, hard bodied lures shallow divers in pinks and gold have also been successful.
The mouth of the Burnett, Burrum and Baffle Creek have seen some good catches of Squid over the past few weeks mainly on top of the tide which was around late afternoon at the start of July. Good place for Squid is between the mouth of the Burnett to the lighthouse.
At the dams some nice Saratogo have been landed at Cania, plus some nice Yellowbelly. News from other dams is that the Barra are starting to get bigger and are showing up in numbers mainly in the tree areas and the weed beds towards the shallows. Best baits here, I am told, is live bait.
Looking forward to August the weather should warm up a bit so the forecast says, Lake Monduran fishing has picked up with some nice sized Barra about, they seem to come out the deep during mid-morning and feed in the shallows then move into deeper water mid to late afternoon. Most fish are around 80 to 90cm with one or two hitting the magic metre mark. The gold b52 is still a favourite floating lure and has been working the best, but make sure you are using a lure for the depth you are fishing. Most fish have been caught on hard bodied lures around the 50mm size.
Best fishing times for August will be the first week with the full moon on the 2nd then the weekend of the 18th. Also try from Thursday 23rd to Monday the 27th, I personally have never liked fishing in August due to very small high tides. August for me is a time to do checks on my boat for the months ahead.
September tides start to build to three metres. It’s the start of the Flathead migration into the creeks and river for breeding, the Chopper Tailor are about and so are the bigger ones as they start their run. The Salmon, which are running through Northern NSW and the Tweed, start arriving here in Bundy with the full moon in August and September being the best month. The best month for fishing for Flathead is October but more about that in next month’s write up. Magpie season is hereMagpie season occurs between August and
December. During a period of about six weeks, magpies are breeding and tend to be protective of their chicks.
The male magpie may swoop on anyone who gets too near the nest. Usual warnings include beating their wings, clacking their beaks and occasionally pecking. The attack is usually limited to the magpie ‘defence zone’ around the nest tree. This is about 100 metres in radius. The bird’s aim is just to drive away the intruder, not to cause injury.
A few simple actions can help:• Stay well clear of areas where there are nesting trees.• If you must enter the area, move through it quickly but
don’t run.• Magpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them.
Try to keep an eye on the magpie while walking carefully away.
• Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella for protection.
• Bike riders should dismount and walk through the territory. Research has shown that the swooping stops when riders get down and walk. You may think you can outrun the bird but accidents can happen when cyclists swerve to avoid it. Fitting an orange traffic flag onto your bicycle as well as zippy ties attached to your helmet, can serve as deterrent.Remember, magpies will only swoop when there are
chicks in the nest and they feel threatened. Be patient with them – they are only trying to be good parents.

I am as passionate about Digestive Enzymes as I am about Naturopathy as a whole. Unfortunately, many people have not even heard of them. Firstly, keep in mind that I would recommend Digestive Enzymes to most people before a multi-vitamin. Digestive Enzymes assist you to receive more nutrients from your food. We are a society of ever increasing digestive issues....so we need to listen to our bodies and treat the cause and not just the symptoms.
Digestive enzyme in our body, break down food particles for storage in the liver or muscles. This, stored energy, is later converted by other enzymes for use by the body when necessary. We all know we have enzymes in our saliva, but we also have enzymes that are formed in our pancreas and intestines. We have enzymes to break down protein, starches and fatty acids.
Many of us eat meals that contain protein, starches and fatty acids, such as the good old Aussie roast dinner or steak – potatoes, vegetables and gravy etc. Over time, our enzymes can become exhausted due to us constantly combining these three different food types. When our enzymes become exhausted we are unable to digest our food correctly. If you are only digesting half of your food correctly then you are only receiving half the nutrients out of that food.
Undigested food sits in the
bowel pockets and ferments and turns into acid and can then convert to uric acid and sit on the joints. Undigested food also leads to food sitting in our intestines in larger molecules which leads to constipation, increases in food intolerances and food allergies, indigestion, reflux, flatulence, bloating, acidic systems, tiredness (your body takes your energy away while it is trying to digest the food) and a whole range of other health issues. Many of the digestive issues are then treated with anti acids, laxatives etc.
In an ideal world, we would all change our diet and eat either, a protein, starch or fatty acid in each meal. But who is going to give up their roast potatoes with their roast lamb? Believe me, not many people will. This is where we can supplement with a digestive enzyme during these meals to assist with the body to break down the food. The best thing is, if you do this for a period of time, your bodies Digestive Enzymes are able to have a rest and will restore and then work better. So, most people won’t have to keep supplementing with the Digestive Enzymes forever. You may, however, choose to keep a bottle in the house for those times when you say “I am soooo full and I shouldn’t have eaten all of that” or “I knew that bread makes me bloated, so why did I eat it?”. You can then have a Digestive Enzyme to allow your body to break down the food quicker so you are less likely to be bloated and increasing
your risk of building up a food allergy or intolerance and acid.
There is also research to show that proteolytic enzymes can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. References for this statement are available upon request. If you are receiving chemotherapy or radiation, please consult with your GP, pharmacist or a qualified naturopath before self prescribing.
Please note that not all Digestive Enzymes available at a retail level will be suitable for all people. I have done a lot of research of Digestive Enzyme supplements and find that only particular formulas work effectively. Things look brighter for solarIt is a truth in life that the only thing you can rely on is that
things will change. Nothing could be more true in the energy efficiency industry. In the last few weeks we have witnessed some of the most monumental back flips by both the federal and state governments in regards to harvesting alternate energy that have ever been witnessed . Unfortunately, when
faced with decisions which affect the whole country’s economic future, I guess some tough ones need to be made.

Tech Talk & TipsSuzanne has written that the programs on
her Windows 7 computer started misbehaving since her son used it last, and wants to know if there is anything she can do to solve this problem or does she need to take it to a computer store? Well Suzanne, I would suggest you try system restore, here’s what you do. First of all close down all programs, click on start and go to the search box, type in system restore and when it comes up on screen click on it, and follow the easy instructions, set the computer back to a couple of days before your son used it. The computer will automatically restart itself when it is done. If this makes matters any worse you can easily reverse it. Suzanne, you may want to take it to a technician if this does not solve your problem as it could have numerous problems that a technician cannot solve without looking at it.
Due to the fact that the question I am most asked about is buying a new computer I thought I would try to explain the do’s and don’ts regarding this difficult and sometimes expensive process. I will give you the alternatives between the franchised dealers and the stand alone independents’, as you know AMS computers sponsors this article, so to be fair I will give you the advantage and disadvantages from both perspectives
At AMS Computers the price charged for laptops includes the full setup; this is a lengthy process which includes the removal of temporary programs, setup of your Email account as well as installation of your internet, or wireless internet stick, if you have one. They also install Java, Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Anti-Virus and Office, download and install all the up-dates plus down load copy and burn the installation discs. They will also remove any or all of your personal information, data etc. from your old computer to your new computer, if possible. AMS Computers offer this service if you do not feel confident enough to go through this difficult and lengthy process yourself. As far as I am aware AMS Computers is the only computer store that offers this service at the point of sale.
When you buy from the big franchised dealerships the first time your computer sees light of day from the manufacturer to you, is when you open the box. I saw an advertisement stating that their computers are
sold with an in store installation, upon further investigations it was found that they charged for this service $99 (not advertised) and it was then discovered that the person doing the installation was one of the floor salesmen who had little or no experience. This can and does cause loads of problems for you, the consumer, not to mention the frustration. Desktop computers from franchised dealers come the same way as laptops, you have to do the installation yourself, when you buy a new computer you want to be able to just take it home plug it in and play.
Desktop computers built by AMS Computers however, are custom made for you, the customer as to your needs, they contain all the above, are fully installed and set up. AMS Computers back their product and are so confident with their quality these desktop systems even come with a five year, limited warranty. Another point to mention is when you pick up your new computer, unless it is from a Franchised Dealer, make sure you get your original copies of all your installed programs before you leave the shop, “that’s the law”,
Service is another thing to consider, when you leave a franchised dealer with your new Laptop, usually that is the end of their involvement. Should you experience problems in the near future, it is up to you to deal with the supplier and then parcel and send it away, then chase it up for return, if you have photo’s or important documents on the computer they will most certainly all be lost! AMS Computers, on the other hand, will remove and store any information you may require saved and will even pack and send it away for you. Service is a factor that you should consider.
AMS Computers has asked me to tell you that some franchised dealers have some great specials on at the moment and that they, AMS Computers, will do the set ups and installations professionally for you if required. Even if you have bought from somewhere else
Here’s a few tips on installation, let’s start with installing Windows 7, 1- Click start, 2- in the start menu click computer, 3- click properties, the system window will appear, 4- click activate Windows now, 5- click activate Windows online now, Windows 7 will then confirm it has been activated. Remember you
can only activate Windows 7 on one computer only. Now if you don’t have internet access just do the steps I have just told you above 1 to 5 wait a few moments and Windows activation will display a list of options, click on show me other options, if you have a modem on your computer use your modem to connect directly to the activation service but if you don’t have a modem, click the use the automated phone system instead.
Windows 7 is a great program with many innovations that make computing fun and interesting for even newcomers to the world of computing. The staff at AMS have discovered a book that makes the transition from XP and Vista to Windows 7 much easier, “Teach Yourself Visually Microsoft Windows 7” they have it in stock for just $32 and this month when you purchase the ASUS i5 laptop (in Blue, White, Red) you get this book for free.
In last month’s column I wrote - Quote “Once the dreaded Carbon Tax comes in prices on everything will go up and AMS like everyone else will have no option but to raise prices” Unquote. It begs the question then why someone would make a statement in Letters to the Editor (NewsMail) that AMS Computers is raising prices now! Nothing could be further from the truth! In the last six years petrol has near doubled, Public Liability and contents insurance has gone up by approximately 40%, wages have gone up, electricity prices have risen by approximately 40% and rates go up every year. During all this, AMS Computers’ prices have remained the same. AMS knows how tough the people out there are doing it and have absorbed all the extra costs themselves over this time. During the past six years AMS Computer Services has donated many computer systems to not for profit groups such as Make A Wish, Drug Arm, SES Volunteers, Lung support, Toy Library, Junior Air League etc., as far as they know they are also the only Computer store that accommodates young people for school based work experience. Why not design a perfumed garden? Spring is full of colour and lots of perfumed flowers. They can be as subtle as brushing past aromatic foliage to as tantalising as your senses desire. Make the most of making your garden an exciting place to be, full of interest.

There is such a range of perfumed varieties around and these are just a few of the best.
Barbra Streisand – has large attractive clear lavender colour flowers on long stems. Is a vigorous grower with an intense rose and citrus fragrance.
Fire Fighter – has rich velvet red flowers on long stems with an intense old rose fragrance.
Ebb Tide – deep purple flowers with an intense clove fragrance.Elina – has light yellow flowers that fade with age with a
beautiful fragrance.Other plants that are strong perfume performers are the
incredible jasmine vines flowering abundantly in spring, the Brunsfelsia or Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow bush in beautiful shades of mauve and purple and also the abundant citrus blossoms. These you can probably share with your neighbours as the aroma can be noticed from a short distance away.
More subtle performers are the lavender varieties, gardenias or magnolias. The Port Wine Magnolia is a real best kept secret. The flowers are tucked away inside the compact shrub and not very noticeable yet walk past this shrub in flower and the perfume will attract your attention.
Cardamom has a lush sweet fruity aroma with its foliage so pleasant when you are nearby or on a breezy day. This
looks perfect in a tropical or Balinese style garden or excellent in a pot for a modern look.
Don’t overlook all the herbs, a fun one is the chocolate mint groundcover and yes you can eat it!
So this spring get out into the garden and take a good whiff and enjoy the aromas of spring.

Apple CrumbleIngredients:
Method: 1. Peel, core and quarter apples and slice thinly. Place in
saucepan with cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of water, 2 – 3 tablespoons of sugar. Gently simmer until apples are just soft.
2. Preheat oven to 180°C. Combine the flour, brown sugar, butter and oats in a bowl.
3. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the walnuts.
4. Spoon the apple into an ovenproof dish. Scatter the crumble mix evenly over the apples. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden. Serve with ice-cream.
