Barbara Lee Senior Center MembershipsMilpitas’ Barbara Lee Senior Center is for adults 50+. A Senior Center Membership is required to participate in all programs (unless otherwise noted, such as Lunch Program or Bingo). Membership fees are $12 for Milpitas residents and $30 for non-residents. Milpitas residents must show two proofs of residency for the discounted rate. Please note: For any total charge of $11-$50 there is a $1 processing fee. For total charges of $51 or more, the processing fee is $3. Processing fees are nonrefundable.

Older Americans Month - Thank You!The Senior Center staff would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Older Americans Month activities which included a Bingo Marathon, Craft Classes, Root Beer Float Social and a Resource Fair. Staff would also like to thank all the different agencies that were a part of the Resource Fair and who donated prizes. The winners of the drawing were: Henry Wu, Bill Wong and Khein Lai. EVENTSI Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream! Tuesday, July 2, 2:00PMWhen you think of hot summer days, a bowl of delicious cold ice cream usually comes to mind! Our annual Summer Ice Cream Social is a great way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth at the same time. We’ll have a couple of different flavors and a variety toppings so you can create your own magical sundae to enjoy while getting to know some other Senior Center members.

Ol’ Fashioned BBQ LunchFriday, August 16, 12:00PMIt’s time for our annual Summer BBQ Lunch! Enjoy a freshly cooked lunch out on the patio with your friends. The meal includes a barbecued entrée, several side dishes, a dessert, plus a choice of either iced tea or lemonade. A vegetarian entrée option will also be available. We’ll even have some fun lawn games to play. Tickets can be purchased starting July 16 at the Front Desk for the nominal fee of $4 per meal.

Door-to-door service to the Senior Center and back home again on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from approximately 8:30AM to 2:30PM. (Wednesday until 4:00PM) This service is intended for members with limited or no access to transportation. For more details and to register, please call 408-586-3400. Eligibility Requirements: Must be a Current Senior Center member and live within the Milpitas city limits. Must make reservations in advance.

Senior Adults Legal Assistance2nd & 4th Wednesdays 10:00AM - Noon (by appointment only) SALA is a non-profit elder law office whose mission is to support older persons in their efforts to live safely, independently, non-institutionalized, and with dignity. Established in 1973, SALA provides free legal services and community education to Santa Clara County residents who are age 60 or older. There is no income eligibility qualification to use SALA’s services. SALA’s attorney staff provides a range of legal services from simple advice/referrals to comprehensive legal representation. SALA’s caseload consists of legal matters that private attorneys typically do not handle and that have a great impact on elders most in need in our community.

Fitness Center OrientationFriday, July 19 & August 16 at 1:00PM Let the Senior Center help you stay on track with your goal of being healthy. The cost to use the Fitness Center is just $1.50 per visit which are sold in increments of 5, 10, 15 & 20 visits. If you’re not familiar with the equipment in the Fitness Center, we have free Fitness Room Orientations on the 3rd Friday of each month at 1:00 pm. A Personal Trainer will go over the proper use of all the equipment in the room with you. Our Certified Personal Trainers can also assist you in your fitness needs. A trainer can meet with you to talk about your needs and goals, put together a workout schedule and help train you in the Fitness Center. Keeping You Safe! Tuesday, July 30 at 9:30AM Timothy Harris, A Vital Link representative, will be presenting on how medical alert systems can help you live independently and save your life. He will also give you tips on how to prevent yourself from falling and what to do if you should fall. If interested in learning more, please register by Monday, July 29.

Teach Seniors Technology (TST) Fridays 3:30PM– 4:30PMTeach Seniors Technology is a volunteer program provided by high school students who are dedicated to teaching older adults how to use modern technology for free. TST volunteers offer specific sessions on computer basics, web safety, how to surf the web, and how to use social media. DAY TRIPSThe Barbara Lee Senior Center is excited to offer a variety of fun day trips that explore many beautiful Bay Area destinations, as well as unique events and activities. The day trips are very popular, so a lottery system is used to determine which participants will attend each trip.

Enjoy a musical song and dance variety show performed by the members of the Senior Citizens’ Opportunities (SCO) organization at 1:00PM. The theme for this year’s show is “Fascinatin’ Rhythms.” Fee includes transportation and admission to the show. Before the show, we will stop for a no-host brunch at the Santa Cruz Fisherman’s Wharf.Depart at 9:45AM
