What is the difference between Aura Cacia® conventional and organic essential oil lines?

Sustainable Sourcing

Aura Cacia® team members visited Madagascar in late October, 2009 to explore sustainable sources for organic Ylang Ylang III essential oil. Ambanja is the region that produces this oil, and after seeing the abundant crop and observing the farmer’s distillation process, the team was thrilled to have found a completely sustainable operation.

Samples were rigorously tested in the Aura Cacia Quality Assur-ance lab in Urbana, IA to confirm that the oil was unadulterated. Finding that the oil was 100% pure and had the proper organic certification to meet USDA regulations, it was decided that this particular oil source was the perfect fit for the new Aura Cacia®

organic essential oil line.

All of our oils meet the same rigorous standards—backed by our sophisticated testing—for quality and purity. Aura Cacia® organic essential oils differ in how the plants used to make the oils are grown and how the oils are handled in the manufacturing process. Aura Cacia organic essential oils are certified to have been made from plants that are grown on organic farms without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides or chemicals. Because of these strict organic farming regulations, organic essential oils cost more to produce and therefore carry a higher price in the store. The payback for the extra cost goes beyond the product itself—growing organic plants is better for the environment, and organic agriculture provides key support to many small farmers and farmer co-ops around the world, including in underdeveloped Third World countries.

Our manufacturing facility and all of our organic essential oils have been affirmed as certified organic by an established third-party certifier, Quality Assurance International (QAI). Aura Cacia takes that extra step—we adhere to the strict USDA* requirements for organic products in addition to our regular certification requirements.

Who knew soccer would be a vehicle through which we could “give back” to the community we visited? Soccer is very popular in Madagascar, and there are soccer fields in every community. Each ball is worth the equivalent of 4-5 days of an average worker’s wage, so it’s rare to find children playing with real soccer balls. Instead, most of the children wrap plastic bags into a round shape then tape it together with duct tape to use as their soccer ball. During the sourcing trip, the team purchased new soccer balls and distributed them to the chil-dren in the villages. The huge smiles and laughter that resulted were a fun takeaway from the trip.
