Introduction : Need Assessment survey is part of Design clinic scheme from Ministry of MSME, GOI. The Scheme has been implemented in partnership with NID, National Institute of Design based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

MCED, Maharashtra Centre for E n t r e p r e n e u r s h i p D e v e l o p m e n t , Aurangabad selected Auto-Cluster for conducting NAS and Workshop for Design clinic scheme. The cluster members are enrolled to 2 day design seminar, where design experts from industry gave presentation on design.

Auto-Cluster member primarily from Chikkaltana and Waluj industrial area have enrolled for Need assessment survey. A list of 20 MSME units are finalized by MCED officials.

About the Cluster The cluster comprises of small and

medium industr ies manufacturing automobile/ product parts for various industries like Bajaj Auto, Crompton greaves, Aurangabad Electrical, Verroc group, Laxmi agni components, Endurance, Eudson, Videocon, Grind Master, Grindwell- Norton and Garware.

The cluster makes sub-components for the OEM’s (Original Equipment manufactures ) and Tier 1 & Tier 2 suppliers. The products from the MSME units to their customers are like fuel tank assembly, Sleeves, Injection molding parts, head lamps, tail lamps, brake assembly, oil r igs, molds, f ixtures, painting of components, Pivot shafts, housing parts, material handling equipment and fabrication parts.

Apart from four medium units the remaining 16 units are proprietary or

partnership companies. These units have lathes, CNC machines and hydraulic presses. They depend on skilled workers to perform precision job.

About AurangabadLocation:Aurangabad District is located mainly in Godavari Basin and its some part towards North West of Tapi River Basin. This District’s general down level is towards South and East and North West part comes in Purna –Godavari river basin. The Aurangabad district’s North Longitude ( Degree) is 19 and 20 and East Longitude (Degree ) is 74 to 76.

Geology :The entire Aurangabad district is covered by the Deccan Trap lava flows of upper Cretaceous to Eocene age. The traps are overlain by thin alluvial deposits along the major rivers. The basaltic lava flows belonging to the Deccan Trap is the only major geological formation occurring in the Aurangabad district. The lava flows are horizontal and each flow has distinct two units. The upper layers consist of vesicular and amygdule zeolitic basalt whiles the bottom layer consists of massive basalt. A number of lineaments which are fracture zones have been identified on the satellite imagery due to linear pattern, exhibited by darker tone and straight drainage course. These lineaments are favorable for occurrence of groundwater.

Forests :In Aurangbad district total Forest Area is 135.75 Sq.Km. As compare to Maharashtra the forest area of Aurangabad is 9.03%. Mountains :There are three mountains namely1) Antur – its height is 826 Mtr.2) Satonda – 552 Mtr.3) Abbasgad – 671 Mtr. and Ajintha 578 Mtrs. Average Height of Southern portion is 600 to 670 mtrs.



Economy :In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Aurangabad one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640). It is one of the twelve districts in Maharashtra currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).

Rivers :The main rivers In Aurangabad district are Godavari and Tapi and also Purna, Shivna,Kham . Dudhna, Galhati and Girja rivers are the sub rivers of Godavari.

Divisions :The district comprises nine tehsils. These are: Kannad, Soygaon, Sillod, Phulambri, Aurangabad, Khultabad, Vai japur, Gangapur and Paithan.There are nine Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha constituencies located in this district. These are: Sillod, Kannad, Pulambri, Aurangabad Central, Aurangabad West, Aurangabad East, Paithan, Gangapur and Vaijapur. Aurangabad is the only Lok Sabha constituency in this district.

Area :The Aurangabad District’s total area is 10,100 Sq. Kilo Mtrs. Out of which 141.1 Sq. Km is Urban area and 99,587 Sq. Km is Rural Area. Climate :In Aurangabad rainy season starts from the month of June to September- and October to February-Winter Season and March to May Summer Season. The Average rain fall of Aurangabad District is 734 mm and the Minimum Temperature is 5.6 D.C. Maximum Temperature is 45.9 D.C.

Aurangabad City :

Geography and climate:The co-ordinates for Aurangabad are N 19° 53' 47" - E 75° 23' 54". The city is surrounded by hills on all directions.

Temperature: Annual temperatures in Aurangabad range from 9 to 40 °C. In the cold season, the district is sometimes affected by cold waves in association with the eastward passage of western disturbances across north India, when the minimum temperature may drop down to about 2 °C to 4 °C (35.6 °F to 39.2 °F).

Rainfall:Most of the rainfall occurs in the monsoon season from June to September. Average annual rainfall is 725 mm.Aurangabad City Demographics :The city with cantonment had a population of 30209 in 1880s. The city area then was


roughly two and half to three and half square miles. In 1971 the city had a population of 1,50,514, (excluding cantonment) the growth during the decade from 1961 to 1971 was 71.86 percent. The growth was highest in the state even higher than Greater Bombay which grew by 43.75 percent.Marathi and Urdu are the principal languages of the city.

Local arts:Paithani Textiles: The Paithani saris from Paithan are considered to be pricedpossession by one and all. One can get an opportunity to witness this age old art ofweaving Paithani saris. The yarn used is of pure silk and the zari or gold threads drownfrom pure gold.Mashru and Himroo:Aurangabad is famous for Mashru and


Himroo fabrics made of cotton and silkwith the luster of satin. Himru is an age-old weaving craft, and was originally known askum khuab.

Economy Of Aurangabad:

Industry :The city was a major silk and cotton textile production centre. A fine blend of silk with locally grown cotton was developed as Himroo textile. Much of the silk industry has vanished over time, but some manufacturers have managed to keep the tradition alive. Paithani silk saris are also made in Aurangabad. The name of this

cloth is derived from Paithan town.In 1889 a cotton-spinning and weaving mill was erected in Aurangabad city, which employed 700 people. With the opening of the Hyderabad-Godavari Valley Railways in the year 1900 several ginning factories were started. In the Jalna alone there were 9 cotton-ginning factories and 5 cotton-presses, besides two ginning factories at Aurangabad and Kannad, and one oil- press at Aurangabad. The Aurangabad - Jalna belt has some of the largest seed companies in India.Mahyco (R&D + Production), Nath Seeds (R&D + Production) Seminis seeds (R&D + Production) and Monsanto (R&D currently) are some of the big names in the industry.Many firms, in the sectors of automotive and auto components, pharmaceuticals and breweries, consumer durables, plastic processing, aluminium processing, agriculture and biotech, have their manufacturing bases in Aurangabad. Day 1March 24, 2012

Introduction, Nas Report Presentation


Introduction :Design sensitisation seminars organised under Design Clinic Scheme by MCED and

NID in Auragabad region inspired 20 MSME units came forward and enrolled their units to take benefit under Design Clinic Scheme for MSME. In second phase the expert designers then visited each unit an conducted Need Assessment Survey where they seen the setup of the MSME Units, interacted with the respective people in the unit, analyse the individual unit’s strengths and weaknesses, areas where it need improvement and scope of design interventions. The detailed report is submitted to NID and MCED which further was made available to the participent MSME units.

In the third phase, a Workshop was conducted on 24th March 2012 to 28th March 2012 by NID and MCED where designer and MSME unit again sat together and discussed and explain the Need Assessment Report to each unit. The main aim of the Workshop is to discuss the design opportunities with the MSME units and understand their design requirement which can be converted into potential design project.

NAS Report Explanation :The Need Assessment Survey Report was provided to the MSME unit

representatives prior to the workshop. At the seminar main agenda on first day was to explain this report to the MSME representatives. During the explanation of the report the whole process of conducting the survey at each MSME unit, analysing the questionnaire, basis of conclusion for each MSME unit was explained to the representatives. After the explanation of the report during the question answer session, doubt regarding the NAS report as well as regarding this scheme were clarified by the Designers.

Design Requirement:To design a rotary bowl for mixing food material like batter, powder, pickles ,pulp &

juices, ketchup etc. in large quantity. The equipment is basically a mixer used for batch process of food material. It can be manufactured in various capacity like 1 ton, 50 Kg, 25 Kg.

The design of blades / mixer need to change according to the application - ketchup, batter, powder. The container dimension can be of different sizes according to the capacity like 25 kg, 50 kg, 1 ton.

Design Requirement:To design a solar heater system for apartments which will consume less space than

existing system. The approach is to reduce size of individual unit thereby increasing number of units required per apartment which can save the total space occupied. Each unit can be of 150 liter capacity and approximate target cost of each unit can be ̀ 8000 to `10000.

range includes kitchen trolleys, tables, sofa, sofa cum bed, dining table, clothe stand. In hospital furniture it makes saline stand, folding bed( for blood donation camps), potting chair, ice box(for mortuary). It has also made tool trolleys, tea trolleys on order basis.

Design Requirement:To design modular stainless steel kitchen trolley system which can be folded and

installed at new location. This kitchen system includes racks to be mounted under the kitchen platform, side movable racks and dining table.

The under platform racks has to be collapsible or modular so it can be fitted comfortably at any new location. similarly side racks and dining table can be available in various sizes.

seed sawing machine and brick making machine.

Design Requirement:To design a brick manual making machine which can produce 4 bricks in one cycle.

This machines has to be portable so that it can be carried to the construction site easily. The current brick making machine produces 2 bricks per cycle but the production rate is low than required. The brick are made form asphalt, concrete. Pressing material into the mould and releasing is problem areas in current machine which need to solved.
