“AuroAquasafe” Purifier of Water"AuroAquasafe" is a powdered mixture that removes arsenic, iron, fluoride, pathogenic organisms and suspended solids rendering contaminated water into safe drinking water. It has been developed by "Environmental Monitoring Service" laboratory in Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India. "AuroAquasafe" contains a chlorine containing compound, aluminium salt that acts as coagulant and other additives which provide good coagulation and flocculation process for water treatment


"AuroAquasafe" can remove following contaminants from contaminated drinking water:

1. Fluoride from 7 ppm to less than 1.5 ppm level.2. Organic matter.3. Iron from 5 ppm to below 0.3 ppm level.4. Bacteria more than 99.9999 % removal rate.5. Viruses more than 99.99 % removal rate.6. Protozoa parasites – up to 99.9 % removal rate.7. Suspended particles from 800 NTU to less than 10 NTU8. Arsenic (AsIII & AsV) from 400ppb to less than 10 ppb.

Types of water that can be treated with "AuroAquasafe"

• Bore well - water contaminated with fluoride, arsenic, iron and microbes

• Surface water - containing turbidity, organic matter and microbial contamination

• Rain water - contaminated with suspended matter and turbidity

• Flood water - organic matter, turbidity, microbial contamination


USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

• Simple tools required for usage:– A scissor or knife to open the sachet– A spoon or other implement to stir the water– Two vessels (i.e. buckets) with volume capacity of 10 liters or more – the

first to be used for the treatment process and the second to be used for storing the treated water.


How to use "AuroAquasafe"Step 1. Open the "AuroAquasafe" sachet using scissors. Add the contents of the sachet into a bucket containing 10 liters of contaminated water.Step 2. Stir the water vigorously for one minute using the wooden stick.Step 3. Wait for 30 minutes for flocks to settle down, till the water become clear.Step 4. If the water after treatment does not contain any floating debris it can be poured directly to the clean storage bucket. If the water has some floating debris, a filter (cotton cloth) placed on the clean bucket can be used to remove them. Please note: Precipitation particles (sludge) which are left at the bottom of the bucket after coagulation can not be filtered with the filter cloth. They should stay in the bucket, by carefully pouring top water into the clean bucket.Step 5. The water in the clean bucket is safe and ready for consumption.

Why Household Drinking Water?

• While access to drinking water in India has increased over the past decade, the tremendous adverse impact of unsafe water on health continues.

• The World Bank estimates 21% of communicable diseases in India are water related.

• Despite investments in water and sanitation infrastructure, many low-income communities in India continue to lack access to safe drinking water.


Under – five year child deaths

• Almost 2000 children die everyday from water borne diseases – more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and measles combined!

• In 2011, around 50 per cent of global under-five deaths occurred in just five countries, with India ranking highest. Incidentally, India’s toll is higher than the deaths in the next three countries combined!

• The highest mortality from diarrhea is in children under the age of five, highlighting an urgent need for focused interventions to prevent diarrheal disease in this age group.


Malnutrition

• One in every three malnourished children in the world lives in India.

• Diarrhea is caused mainly by the ingestion of pathogens, especially in unsafe drinking water. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50% of malnutrition is associated with repeated diarrhea as a result of unsafe water and insufficient hygiene.

• Lack of safe drinking water close to home has many indirect effects on nutrition. People are often left with no choice but to drink unsafe water from unprotected sources.


Tackling MalnutritionInterventions that contribute to preventing and treating malnutrition include :

– Improved access, by the poor, to adequate amounts of healthy food.

– Improved access to clean drinking water at household level.

– Improved sanitation facilities.

– Health education for a healthy diet.

• HOPE reported reductions in diarrheal incidence in households using water purifier sachets vs control group.

Introduction in Medical Kits with ORS sachets

• The availability of simple, highly effective and affordable treatment in the form of ORS is recommended by UNICEF. All oral fluids, including ORS solution, should be prepared with the best available drinking water.

• Possibility of obtaining clean, safe drinking water is rather remote in village settings throughout India. The availability of treated water would be exceptional.

• While boiling is widely practiced, it may be more costly, inconvenient and environmentally unsustainable than other emerging point-of-use water treatment options, and caution must also be exercised to avoid scalding accidents, especially among young children.


Introduction in Medical Kits with ORS sachets

High Fluoride Contamination• The century-long drinking water problem associated with high

flouride contamination still persists in an alarmingly high number of 14,132 habitations in 19 Indian States, found the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry. (Report Dec., 2014)

• High levels of fluoride contamination affects the teeth and bones and in the long run it leads to symptoms of skeletal fluorosis with abdominal pain, excessive saliva, nausea, vomiting, seizures and muscle spasms. People come to know about it only after 10-15 years when the bones show deformity, when the thickness of the bone, causes stiffness of the spine. It is more visible in growing children below 15 years, according to experts.

• Urging an immediate focus on the Drinking Water and Sanitation to go with the Prime Minister’s “Swachch Bharat” campaign, the health ministry said ensuring the supply of safe drinking water in these habitations will solve the problem.
