A Letter to Our ReadersLots of ways to mark spring’s arrival, March 20. In California,
black-winged swallows return to Capistrano March 19, a day honoring St. Joseph (patron saint of baby aspirin). In other places, it’s when the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, or six weeks after Bill Murray wakes up and sees his shadow.
Ireland celebrates early (constantly, actually) by drunkenly commemorating March 17 as the day St. Patrick drove the snakes (heathens, actually) to America, where they became corporate lobbyists.
Best celebration, though, is Whuppity Scoorie, celebrated March 1 only in one small Scottish town, in which kids run in circles
around buildings and money is tossed in the air – not to be confused with Whuppity Stoorie, a tale involving a pig, a baby, and a fairy.
Austin combines these when black-clad young hipsters return each March to drink and walk in circles around town, tossing money into SXSW – the spring rite kicking off Festival Season, which runs March through Forever.

to unconsciously competent in some areas because I haven’t learned the skills or put in the hours to make it as easy as breathing.
I have to slow down, focus, stay aware, and consciously become competent.
In time, I’ll move into Unconscious Competence as a performer.
When we were recording, someone mentioned a baritone saxophone.
A what?We called up the band Morphine, which leans on a bari
sax to create its haunting sound, and listened.
Sax maniac.I was instantly in love with the gutsy, sexy music.I looked at baritone saxes online.Talk about intimidating.Put one in my hands and I wouldn’t know how to hold it,
let alone play it.Of course, given enough time, lessons, and focused
practice, I’d learn my way around that instrument.So here’s how the four stages of learning look in this case:
Unconscious Incompetence. (Never even heard of a baritone sax.) Conscious Incompetence. (Know what it is, but know I can’t play it,) Conscious Competence. (If I took lessons and practiced, I could play it with focused awareness.) Unconscious Competence. (Given enough practice, I could pick it up and play without thinking.)
What next?I found an Austin player and hired him. He came to the
studio and added sultry spice to one of my songs. While I had his ear, I asked all kinds of questions about the sax, and how to buy and play one.
I contacted the sax instructor he told me was the best one, and ordered the book The Devil’s Horn.
I then went online and researched vintage baritone saxophones, as I wanted an investment grade instrument.
See how this works?I went from being oblivious about the bari sax
(Unconscious Incompetence) to the second stage (Conscious Incompetence), into stage three (Conscious Competence). As long as I maintain lessons and practice, I can, given enough time, move into the fourth stage, Unconscious Competence – or Mindless Sax. (Couldn’t help myself ).
But I couldn’t just pick up the sax and play!All of this is a reminder to be easy with yourself.You can master virtually any skill, but it takes time,
awareness, intent and discipline.Three years ago, I couldn’t sing, play guitar, write songs or
music. Today I have seven albums. Seven!The payoff of patience and practice is great success.You’re worth it.
During the recent recording of my seventh album, Reflection, I mentioned the term unconscious competence to my band.
It’s a mental state where you can perform without thinking; your body and mind automatically know what to do without concentration.
The four stages of competence is a model of learning created in the 1970s:
• UnconsciousIncompetence.You can’t do something, and aren’t aware you can’t.
• ConsciousIncompetence.You can’t do something, and are aware you can’t.
• ConsciousCompetence.You can do something, but only with concentration.
• UnconsciousCompetence.You can do something without thought.
When you first learned to drive a car, you were in the second stage – can’t drive, and know you can’t. As you took lessons, you moved into the third stage.
Today, you probably drive without thinking about it, an Unconscious Competent driver. You can drive and talk, listen to music, even make a phone call. It’s second nature, automatic.
The problem in doing something new is wanting to be a master – Unconsciously Competent – when you don’t yet have the skills.
An example might be tossing you the keys to a huge tractor-trailer truck with eighteen gears and telling you to drive it.
Goodluck.I’ve driven such rigs, and eighteen gears are confusing.I could urge you on, inspire you, motivate you, but if you
have no practice with shifting eighteen gears, you won’t be able to do it.
No amount of pep talks will get you moving that rig.No amount of saying “Trust your body,” or “Your mind
knows,” or “You can do it!” will get you moving that tractor-trailer in a safe, reliable way.

Issues with women.Got your attention with that one, huh?
That’s what a subhead is supposed to do.Natural magazines tend to have a
rep for being yin-oriented, although this one’s done its best to yang
things up a bit, just to keep a bit of balance. (Works for Gregg Braden and Tony Robbins and them, right?) The March issue, though, is traditionally spring-oriented, and young men’s fancies aside, spring is pretty yin – lush, juicy, vernal. (Love that word.)
This March issue did seem to attract a bit more women’s
content than usual, although calling it “The Women’s Issue”
seemed like pandering – Fancy seemed to do nicely. Just to keep
that yin/yang balance, though, here’s a little something for those of the yang
persuasion. Hmm, let’s see… how ‘bout that Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover, guys? (Was that
pandering?)
Fancy this. In the spirit of recent landmark votes in Washington state
and Colorado (cue the Rocky Mountain High jokes) and the news that the feds decided it’s okay for banks to help rake in some of the, umm, pot, Texas fielded a candidate for Agriculture Commissioner for the March 4 primaries who stumped for Texas to get in on the act, sort of.
Richard “Kinky” Friedman, former goobernatorial candidate, country music star, novelist, and tequila maker (agave – a fine sustainable crop) wants Texas to stretch a few state’s rights muscles of its own and start growing a doesn’t-even-get-you-high crop that can make paper, textiles, oil, edible goodies, and a whole host of other products, and needs no pesticides and little water. Grows like a (wink, nudge) weed, in fact. (Ahemp.)
Political endorsements in these pages wigged everybody out last time they showed up, so nothing specific this time around – primaries are over less than a week after this issue comes out, anyway. Wouldn’t it be cool, though, to see Texas grab an early lead in the U.S. market for industrial (ahemp)?
Crank up Copperhead Road on the music-making device of your choice, close your eyes, and fancy it happening.
Gotta love a word that can be a noun, verb, or adjective. Flight of fancy? It’s a wild, whimsical notion, a fantasy, maybe of romance and love. Fancy can also mean dressy, elaborate, maybe a little over the top – and, of course, in an ever so British sort of way, to fancy something is a fancy way of saying you dream about it, like it, want it – maybe even desire it.
Speaking of Brits…The Poet Laureate of
Great Britain during Victoria’s reign was one Alfred Tennyson – Alfred, Lord Tennyson, in his full, fancy entitlement – a wild-haired, bearded guy who gave us the line about how, in the Spring, a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love. (Presumably, the occasional young woman’s did as well, or there wouldn’t have been enough British to colonize half the world during Tennyson’s lifetime.)
Not a bad turn of phrase, but you could do a whole lot more with less when you have a fancy-pants, triple-faceted word like fancy to play around with. Let’s say you have a whimsical yearning for an elaborate fantasy of love and desire – you could say, “I fancy a fancy fancy!” (Fair warning, though, if you’re here from the British Isles for SXSoWhat. Say something like that in an Austin bar south of the river, and someone might kick your fancy butt.)
Spring.That’s another word that could do triple duty. You could
maybe say, “I think I’ll spring a spring spring,” but unless you’re out in the yard digging a well, it wouldn’t make much sense – blows spell-check’s mind, in fact.
Point is, it’s March, when spring happens. Spring is a sort of rare and fancy bird hereabouts, glimpsed but briefly before the grackle of summer rasps it away in a harsh cacophony of irritating metaphor. Fancy yourself up – fall in love, paint your eyes yellow and green, wear crystals on your face and flowers and bamboo in your hair.
You won’t stand out much around here, but you’ll have fun.

Long before Peewee’s Playhouse, Willie Wonka, and Hogwarts, before video games, math camps and play dates, there was Theodore Geisel and a red and white top hat. Geisel was the doctor – Doctor Seuss – and the hat was the hat of The Cat in the Hat, published in 1957.
A Cat? A Hat? Imagine that.On a rainy day, the Cat comes knocking on the window
of Sally and her brother and turns their world – and the world of childhood reading – upside down. Seuss, who probably sprinkled a little mescaline on his cereal every morning, created a delightfully insane world of fantasy and anarchy, killing off the squeaky clean images of Dick, Jane, and Spot – stars of Fifties reading textbooks who never seemed to do anything except see and run.
The Cat unleashes Thing One and Thing Two and tears the house apart, while the goldfish chastises him like a radio evangelist. At the last minute, the Cat produces a magical machine, a literal deus ex machina – a fantastical plot twist that cleans up the whole mess and saves the day, just before Mom gets home.
Complete craziness, something that could only exist in a book, never on a stage. Right?
Wrong. Austin’s Zach Theatre re-enacts the mayhem in a kid and
adult-friendly forty-minute production, bringing kids in by the busload. Directed by Nat Miller, who left Austin’s Paramount to run Zach’s education program, The Cat in the Hat shows during the week at a reduced rate for students, particularly from lower income schools. “We don’t turn anyone away,” Miller says. “We want kids to see this show, then go back and read the book.”
Some researchers believe the onslaught of video images on kids’ brains overdevelops neural pathways for vision, neglecting hearing and tactile pathways – and imagination. The physicality of Zach’s Cat is real and immediate, like live Cirque de Soliel for kids – professional theater, fantastic, but not as scary as Cirque or creepy, like the Mike Meyers movie.
And if kids (and their parents) re-read Dr. Seuss –Well, Zach’s Cat in the Hat has been put to good use!

How do I know if I’m on a spiritual path? The right spiritual path? I feel I’m opening to new things, new ideas, deeper aspects of myself. I’m changing. I want more than what life is giving me. I want to experience deeper love, greater peace, a stronger sense of myself. Is that a spiritual path? Do I need a teacher, a guru? There seems to be so much information out there, so many approaches, so much to know and do. Where and how do I begin?
Sound familiar? I suspect, for many, it does. Most of us reach a point in life where you’re no longer satisfied with what you’ve experienced, no longer satisfied with what family, churches, society have taught you is true, no longer satisfied with what the material world can provide, with what the world deems to be a successful life.
You begin to search, to question, to seek out other possibilities, ways of thinking, ways of living. You’ve awakened. So, does this mean you’re on a spiritual path? It does indeed. You’ve stepped upon a path that is beyond material, into spiritual.
But is it the right spiritual path?
Who’s your guru?ThePathofYOU
Ifyou’reonit,it’stherightpath.For certain, there are many teachers, schools of thought,
approaches. It can be confusing and overwhelming when you begin. Be not afraid. You are on the right path. For you, there is finally only one true path – the path of YOU. All the teachers, gurus, and approaches, if they’re of any worth at all, will ultimately take you back to you.
All work that needs to be done is with yourself. All realizations and truths to be unveiled live within you. There’s nowhere else to go. Trust your inner voice, your intuition.
If you’re called to read a certain book, read it. If you feel like going and listening to a teacher, go. If a certain group approach resonates with you, explore it. It doesn’t matter. Let you mind and heart be open. Take what feels right for you. Discard the rest. It’s your path – the path of YOU.
The world around you mirrors exactly what you need to know about yourself, what you judge about yourself, what you love about yourself. Look in the mirror that’s your lover, spouse, mother, boss. Know you’re seeing a reflection of some aspect of you. If you love what you see, honor that. If you react in judgment or anger, accept that what you see lives within you, waiting to be loved. Accept. Forgive.
Love where you have not loved before. This is your path. Your path and all paths lead to love, love that is unconditional, love that is unconditional toward yourself – all that you are, the dark and the light.
Cry out to the Universe that you’re ready – ready to know and love you, wholly and unconditionally. The path will unfold before you, from inside you. The path of enlightenment. The journey home.
The path of YOU.

In seconds, these two people would cease to be strangers, as your psyche wrapped them in stories, fairy tales, and your own memories. Open any New Age magazine these days and you find hundreds of different ways to heal spiritually. Most of them are valid. What distinguishes one practice from the other?
Thepractitioner.Anyone can take a weekend workshop to receive
attunements or initiations, but the difference in their medicine lies in how deeply they are able to hold it. As the ancient shamans knew well, healing others starts with healing yourself.
Has your healer done the deep personal work of clearing their own stories, or are they seeing you through their old wounds? If you’re a healer, have you removed the imprints you carry around – your roles, and the beliefs binding you to ancestral, cultural, and karmic lineages? Have you dug up and owned your shadow pieces? If not, you will forever be derailed into working the unhealed parts of yourself through your clients.

Clear vessels.Whileit’sexcitingthatsomanyEnergyMedicine
modalities are finding their way back into the light, it’s
important that the work is done cleanly. Our best practitioners have worked through their own
personal issues, to ensure they’re the clearest vessels possible for your healing.
Healing for the Modern Shaman is a two-fold process. First, a practitioner must be able to see your possible future healed states, clearly, without imposing their own past, hopes, dreams, drama, expectations, needs, or limited beliefs on you. They must also be able to align with and transmit the high vibrational healing frequencies
of Creation, without diluting that force. When the ego is involved in needing specific outcomes
to our work, or when it’s needing healing itself, we redirect that energy to ourselves, impeding the
natural flow between client and Spirit.Further, we cannot hold high visions when we see
only ourselves. The shamans of old used the term Hollow Bone to describe themselves as an instrument that holds open space between Spirit and their client. If you’re a hollow bone, you’ve done the hard work of clearing your ego, or personal biases, from your work.
Leaky wires.Think of the healer as a giant transmission line. If you
need your clients to heal so you feel better about yourself, your wires are leaking energy off into your self-worth, and are not able to hold a very high voltage. If you’re bogged down in all the imprints, limited beliefs and dysfunctional behaviors you learned as a child, you will not be a very conductive transmission line.
Further, if your vision is clouded with all the limits of your own childhood drama and the limited cultural perceptions you have inherited unquestioningly, you may be unable to map outcomes for your client outside the box. Until we can transcend our agendas, we cannot hold the higher visions of possibility, or the high vibration frequencies necessary for full healing.

International bestselling author and neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter, M.D., claims that high carb diets and the modern gluten protein both trigger inflammation, which is the cornerstone of all degenerative conditions from heart disease to Alzheimers. receptors in the brain, they produce effects similar to opiate drugs like heroin and morphine, but on a more subtle level.

Isglutenaswidelyprevalentastobaccooncewas?It’s everywhere.Between 1960 and 1985, industry replaced America’s
traditional wheat with a genetically new strain of wheat. This modern wheat contains far more starch, and a new variation of gluten protein.
Because wheat is a huge taxpayer-subsidized crop in this country, it’s an extremely cheap product – one that entices commercial food producers to “improve” the texture of their products by adding gluten, or by replacing traditional ingredients with it.
In addition to widely available foods like bread and cereal that are obviously wheat-based, others frequently contain gluten as well – soups, broths, sauces, gravies, dressings, lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages, chips, candy, ice cream, instant drinks (including coffee), soda, various condiments and syrups, pickles, toothpaste and other body care, and supplements.
“It’s my belief that gluten is a modern poison,” states Dr. Perlmutter, adding that virtually everyone is affected by gluten, including (but not necessarily just limited to) those with gluten sensitivity, gluten intolerance, and those with the extreme manifestation of gluten sensitivity – Celiac Disease.

In the year 2012, at a gathering in the forested mountains of Washington State, I walk across a meadow towards a canvas pavilion. In the shade, a circle of people sits on folding chairs. I see a genial-looking man with long white hair and a gray beard, who sits beside a lovely dark-haired woman I recognize as his partner.
For the next hour, we are swept up in the quiet and yet enchanting tones of the man’s voice, embraced within his knowledge and wisdom, and given a taste of a life lived in depth, fully examined, and dedicated to the Mystery. He is one of the pre-eminent scholars and seers of what is sometimes called the Faery Tradition of Western Europe.
This experience of meeting R.J. Stewart and Anastacia Nutt for the first time proves to be a key moment. Having absorbed many of R.J.’s books over the years, I’m aware of the immense scope of his interests, and the treasures he shares. This is not merely information, scholarly and detailed though it is, but also a guiding presence, humble and clear, that beckons you simply to come along with him and share his journey for a while.

separate and divided from the material world – my feeling is that, mysteriously, it’s all One. Matter is entirely the expression of what we call spirit. Everything is energy.

Dance is one of the most ancient ways for humans to communicate with the divine. In the sacred space of the dance circle, people connect deeply with each other, and experience the power of their own potential.
Prema Dasara, creator of transformational dances, is known for her unique blend
of Tibetan teachings and Indian, Nepalese, and Balinese dance traditions, and is the founder of Tara Dhatu, which sponsors dance rituals, pilgrimages, citizen diplomacy, and online educational programs, as well as a number of humanitarian projects in Nepal. This commitment to myself – and a clear, unconditionally loving guide – changed the course of my life, and supported me in not just dreaming about, but actually becoming, the woman I wanted to be.
