IwillnothidethefactthatwhenIwasyoungerIwasveryeasilyinfluencedwhenitcametopolitics. However, it was not until I got into middle school that I truly understood them. Between the years of Kindergarten and the eighth grade, I attended a private school in Millbrook, New York. The classes were very small there and I got to know everyone in my grade. As friendships devel-oped and as we all got older, I learned that almost all of my friends’ parents voted Democrat. Around the time I began to really understand what politics were and their role in society, George Bush was in officeforhissecondterm.Manyoftheotherchildreninmygradecameintoschoolwithextremelynegative things to say about Bush, which were, most certainly, things that they had heard from their parents.Whethertheseclaimswerejustifiedornot,Ibegantosharetheirviewpointthatalmostanything George Bush did was bad regardless of the fact that I had seen little to no evidence myself. When I began bringing my views home with me, it became apparent to my parents that I was receiv-ing most of this information from my classmates and that I was not forming educated opinions on my own. My parents had always spoken openly about politics in my presence. They have never made it some big secret, but, regardless, a majority of the time I was not old or mature enough to under-stand fully what they were talking about. At that time, my father had a talk with me about how I had to always make sure to form my own opinion rather than simply follow a crowd. He told me that I should not pay attention to a candidate’s political party whether it was a local or even a presiden-tial election. Instead, I should vote for who I believe would do the best job. He, himself, has voted for Democrats in the past, such as Barak Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as Republicans, such as George Bush. I think that this piece of advice, as simple as it may be, was what impacted me the most. Though there is no real way to avoid learning a candidate’s party, I never take it into consid-eration. I only listen to their ideas and the plans that they have to make this country a better place. ThatiswhyIfirmlymaintainthatthebiggestinfluenceonmypoliticalideologyhasbeenmypar-ents.
