About Art in Public Places (AIPP)Program began with AIPP ordinance in 1985 ◦ 1985: 1% of Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Budgets go to artwork ◦ 2002: percent for art increased to 2%

Capital Improvement Projects include: buildings, parks, streetscapes, bridges and more…

Artwork must be sited at funding project/facility

Staff works with AIPP Panel, Austin Arts Commission, project stakeholders, and the community to develop artist opportunities

Artwork OpportunityA range of materials and conceptual approaches are welcome for this commission as long as the parameters and goals of the project are met

The artwork must engage the entire height of the building within the site boundaries (the inverted corner of the building in yellow)

The work can use the ground within the site boundary, but is not required to do so .

The selected artist will work with the project design team, designing an artwork that supports a cohesive experience of the building as a whole.

BUDGET: $74,000Inclusive of ALL project‐related costs such as design, fabrication and installation, consultants, permitting, travel and shipping expenses, insurance etc.

Project Goals and PrioritiesWe are seeking artwork that can…

• reflect the mission of the Austin Convention Center to promote Austin as a premier destination for business and leisure

• energize the urban fabric of the street intersection

• employ integrated design approaches and/or sustainable materials

• be easily maintained and vandal resistant in an exterior environment

• contribute to the depth/breadth of the City of Austin’s public art collection

Artist EligibilityOpen to artists or artist teams from Austin metro area: Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, and Hays counties. 

Full‐time, permanent City of Austin employees including employees of the Austin Convention Center Department and the Economic Development Department, and project consultants and their employees and sub‐consultants are ineligible to apply. 

Artists who currently have one active contract with the Art in Public Places program or who have more than two commissioned permanent projects in the AIPP Collection are ineligible to apply.

AIPP defines an artist as…

“a practitioner in the visual arts with an original self‐conceptualized body of work, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional possessing serious intent and ability.”

Selection ProcessDEADLINE TO APPLY: February 18, 2016 at 5PM (CST)

AIPP Staff will convene a three member Selection Panel to evaluate the  submissions. Up to three finalists will be selected for interviews and proposals.  

Chosen finalists will be asked to create a conceptual proposal with $1,000 stipend to cover time and materials

The Selection Panel will interview finalists, and select one artist and one alternate. This recommendation will be presented to the Art in Public Places Panel and Arts Commission for approval.

Evaluation Criteria

• Artistic merit and technical expertise 

• Successful, innovative, and effective approach to public art projects of a similar scope

• Ability to successfully execute a public art project

• Expressed interest in creating artwork within this project’s site and context

AIPP Approval Process

Austin Arts Commission: Citizen commission appointed by Council to advice City Council in all arts‐related matters.

Art in Public Places (AIPP) Panel: Panel of seven citizen volunteer art and design professionals appointed by the Austin Arts Commission serving 2 year terms

Selection Panel: Group of 3‐5 art and design professionals organized by AIPP project manager and approved by the AIPP Panel to select an artist
