As part of 2011-12 State Bar President Bob Black’s public education initiative, Law Related Education has developed the online resource, Oyez, Oyez, Oh Yay! Civics Resources for Texas Students and Teachers,

an interactive web-based project to assist Texas teachers and students in preparing for new Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards in social studies.

Oyez, Oyez, Oh Yay! focuses on the landmark court decisions middle and high school students must know to be successful. The website includes summaries of the required court cases [PDF version available for download], including discussion of the court’s decision, as well as links to other case resources, videos, and curriculum materials and strategies for teachers.

DATA ANALYSIS

HS Dept Chr Document Library: http://www.austinschools.org/curriculum/soc_stud/hs/dept_chair

Please return all hard copy SCAs and MoYs to folders following your work today.

In looking at your own campus data,I. Regarding TAKS-Based Assessments (Gr 10 and11) what noticings / wonderings

did you make? In particular, A. regarding the Grade 8 TEKS tested again at these HS grade levels? B. when looking at the SCA and MoY test items on these TB Assessments regarding vocabulary? C. what guidance will you give your teachers of these grade-levels in considering forms of remediation that are “velcro” (i.e, “meaningful” and “will stick!”)?

II. Regarding STAAR EOC – World Geography what noticings / wonderings did you make? A. Considering all the unknowns about this test, what does the data reveal about what still needs to be done in 9th grade classes on your campus? B. When looking at the SCA and MoY test items for World Geography, what vocabulary or rigorous texts appear to be “the issue”? How are your 9th grade teachers incorporating “reading strategies” as well as “teaching vocabulary” in their classes? How can you ELA colleagues assist you between now and test time?
