given me an advantage
when applying for
future graduate schools.

opportunity to work
with biological
instruments, and that
is a big plus for me.”

COMMUNICATION ARTS
The communication field is becoming more and more competitive. If you are a communication professional looking for future managerial opportunities or wanting to teach, APSU’s Master of Arts (M.A.) degree specializing in either corporate communication or general communication is for you. Both specializations are offered online.
The M.A. in Communication Arts is designed for you if you are seeking a managerial role
in your communication career or if you want to advance in a supervisory capacity.
The general communication concentration prepares students for doctoral study and teaching at the high school, community college, college or university level. Courses in this sequence allow students to apply theoretical understanding to real world communication problems.
Master of Arts (M.A.) Specializations: General Communication Corporate Communication
“The courses in the
program are relevant to
my everyday work.
The APSU faculty use
the communication
experiences that their
students, working in
various fields and
industries, bring to the
program. When it was
time to complete my final
assignment, I was able
to write a research paper
based on the work I was
doing every day in my
communication job.”
Meet Paul LindsleyNot long after graduating from APSU with a master’s in communication arts, Paul Lindsley (’08) was asked to teach Integrated Corporate Communication for APSU. In addition to the adjunct faculty position, he is director of public relations at Sullivan Branding, an advertising agency in Nashville, Tenn. – and he credits APSU’s graduate communication program for his climbing success in the communication arena.

human resources, accounting,
strategic work, leadership,
ethics and many more. This
is knowledge needed to be a
good manager. In addition,
working as a team, identify-
ing your group’s strengths
and weaknesses and
assigning tasks were
great preparation for
corporate life.”

“My experiences in APSU
classes not only prepared me
for a career in higher education,
but the stories, essays and books
I’ve had published in the past few
years are directly tied to the
writing experiences I had at
APSU. I kept all of my
notebooks, filled with notes from
those wonderful classes, in addition
to my papers and other class work.
Especially when I began teaching,
I referred to those notes for each
class I taught. I had never read
so widely or so deeply.”
Meet Phyllis GobbellPhyllis Gobbell’s (’02) passion for the written word led her to APSU’s M.A. in English degree program, where the supportive faculty and engaging environment allowed her to thrive as a writer. Now, she is an English instructor and published writer who shares her love of literature with her students at Nashville State Community College.
If you manage a health care facility or work in community health, or if you are interested in fitness and exercise science, you might find it’s time to advance your knowledge with a graduate curriculum. The APSU Department of Health and Human Performance offers two concentrations in the Master of Science (M.S.) degree – sport and wellness leadership, and health leadership.
Those pursuing a sport and wellness leadership concentration will get
hands-on laboratory experiences and will have opportunities to do research. The health leadership concentration is focused on developing health educators and enhancing the skills needed to further a career in health administration.
“The class work that I
completed gave me a solid
foundation of knowledge in
human performance. The
professors provided the
opportunity to make the
course material relevant to
each student’s career path,
and I think that each
course was beneficial for
my understanding of
how to improve human
performance.”

Some advanced practice nurses have their own practices or work in collaboration with a physician.
The M.S.N. requires completion of 36 to 46 credit-hours. The curriculum allows students to customize learning opportunities
to fit their goals and needs in collaboration with faculty advisers. Students may pursue full-time or part-time study. All courses, with the exception of clinical rotations, are delivered in an online delivery format.
“Before beginning a
master’s degree program,
I had many questions and
concerns, such as whether
the classes and study
time would fit into work
schedules and family
demands and whether I
would be prepared to pass
the certification exam. I
did a great deal of review
in choosing a nursing
master’s degree program

considered this decision
the most important
decision as it would be

that would follow.”

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
In conjuction with the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP), APSU offers the Master of Professional Studies. This degree is designed for working adults who wish to pursue graduate professional studies that combine two or more disciplines. Because the M.P.S. student’s academic needs and interests are multidisciplinary, a traditional degree program might not be what students need. So if you work in commerce, information technology, mass media, government, social
services, health care, human resources or education, the M.P.S. at APSU might be for you.
The program requires 33 credit-hours, or 11 courses, that cover leadership theory, research and data analysis, organizational structure and change, communication, and strategic planning and assessment.
Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.)

was my way to ensure
professional growth
and to strengthen
my leadership
capabilities.
This degree was
a perfect segue
to that end.”

program will help me gain
valuable additional job

SOCIAL WORK
APSU is part of the Mid-Tennessee Collaborative Master of Social Work program, which brings together three institutions of higher education in Tennessee to offer the M.S.W. degree. The program is designed for the working professional with on-campus courses offered on the main campus in the evening and the remaining classes online.
In the advanced generalist concentration, students obtain greater theoretical and
methodological sophistication, enabling them to work in a wider selection of practitioner roles such as administrators, supervisors, policy analysts and social planners. The concentration curriculum encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and public-private partnerships. It also enhances the student’s skill to address issues of economic and social justice with oppressed populations.
Master of Social Work (M.S.W.)
“APSU master’s degree
