A R T A N e w s e t t e December 2020 page 1
President’s Message I hope all of you had a safe and relaxing
Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving 2020 was definitely different for all of us as we had to limit our travel plans and the size of gatherings with family and friends. Many of us probably even had to dine outdoors at socially-distanced tables in our backyards or patios just so we had the opportunity to see our loved ones during this pandemic.
With the rise of COVID cases in Texas, TRTA has extended its ban on in-person meetings for local units through March 31, 2021. This means that we will continue to meet via Zoom. Many of our spring activities will take on a different appearance. The April 7 TRTA Day at the Capitol will be virtual. Our Legislative Committee will be keeping you informed on how ARTA members can get involved both virtually and through the Red Envelope Campaign that TRTA will be sponsoring. Our March ARTA Birthday Luncheon will also take on a different format, and the ARTA Executive Board will look at innovative ways of holding this event when we meet on January 4. The most important thing I want to convey to you is that, while all of these bans on in-person events may be frustrating, keep in mind that everyone’s health and safety comes first so that we can hopefully begin to gather in person again later in 2021.
The November 13 ARTA regular meeting was a huge success. Many thanks to Dr. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez from The University of Texas at Austin Moody School of Communications for her enlightening presentation on the Latino Oral History Archives that she established at the Benson Library on the UT campus. Many of our members were pleasantly surprised to discover that this valuable resource exists on campus and asked some very thought-provoking questions that led to excellent conversation both during and after our meeting. ARTA military veterans were also recognized for their service in an innovative, virtual way; so thank you again for your patriotism and dedication to our freedom and democracy.
If you were unable to join us or would like to review the November regular meeting again, you can view a recording at the ARTA website homepage: http://localunits.org/austinrta/. I urge you to check our website and our ARTA Facebook
page at https://www.facebook.com/TRTA.org to stay informed about our organization. I continue to commend the hard work that Technology Chair Mary Ann Baker and Facebook page moderator Kevin Gillespie do to keep these resources updated.
I am excited about our December regular meeting as we celebrate the holidays through Zoom. TRTA Legislative Coordinator and long-time ARTA friend Larry Yawn will give us a preview of what to possibly expect from the 87th Texas Legislature when it convenes on January 12. We will continue to “Zoom into New Frontiers” as we take our traditional holiday celebrations virtually. To begin with, we will have online chat rooms from 9:15 to 9:40 that members will be assigned to so they can share their favorite holiday traditions. I urge you to log-in early so that you have a chance to participate. We will also be treated to a special video presentation during our meeting featuring ARTA Secretary Carole Stockton and other members of the Hawaiian Kona Isle Dance Group. They have been working diligently on their presentation this past fall, so I know we will all be in store for a “Mele Kalikimaka” at our meeting!
Although the November 3rd General Election is behind us, those of us who live within the boundaries of the Austin Independent School District still have the opportunity to participate in the December 15 Austin ISD Board of Trustees run-off election. There are two positions that have gone into this run-off. All residents within the Austin ISD boundaries are eligible to vote in the at-large Position 8 Trustee election, while residents in Central, West, and parts of South Austin are eligible to vote in the District 5 Trustee run-off. If you are unsure if you reside in District 5, please refer to the Austin ISD boundary map at https://www.austinisd.org/board/boundaries.
Early voting for the AISD Board of Trustees run-off extends from December 3 through December 11. Information on this election can be found at the Travis County Elections Division website at https://countyclerk.traviscountytx.gov/elections/calendar-of-elections.html.
Keep in mind that the Austin ISD Board of Trustees is responsible for making many decisions that impact our in-service teachers and students;

so I urge you to research candidates’ positions and to vote, whether it be by mail, early, or in person on December 15th.
Mark your calendars for Friday, January 8, for our next regular meeting via Zoom. Addison Reagan, Assistant Director of Government Relations at TRS, will update us on the latest developments from the Texas Teacher Retirement System.
I wish all of you a happy and safe holiday season as we end this challenging year.
Best wishes for a safe and prosperous 2021! Joe Ramirez

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER SERVICE HOURS & HEALTHY LIVING SURVEY
Community Volunteer Service hours and Healthy Living Survey are due by January 31, 2021, for the calendar year 2020.
Below are links to Google polls for the Healthy Living annual survey and the Community Volunteer Service hours survey. These polls feed information into a spreadsheet so that Rose Gonzalez and Evangelina Mangino can easily collect the necessary data to send to District 13 by February 1. Please use these links to complete your surveys by the end of January. The links will also be posted on the website on the corresponding committee pages. Your email address is needed to insure we only record one response from each member. You can still use the forms in the Yearbook or on the website if you do not have computer, tablet, or smartphone access to the Internet, or you can call in your data to Rose and Evangelina. HEALTHY LIVING Staying Healthy for the Holidays
The coronavirus pandemic has upended life since March and our normal life poses particular challenges during this time of year. Not everyone wants to stay home or can stay home (some college students in particular) says Steve Mooney, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington. “It would be really nice to say, ‘Everyone should stay home and we’ll be able to block all new cases,’” he adds, but that’s always not possible. “You know at a certain age your life is finite and you can’t wait forever to see people you love.”
So what is the best way to celebrate or stay connected with family and people you love during the holidays? Of course, we know some of the virtual ways to stay in touch with family or loved
![Page 8: Austin Retired Teachers Association · 11/12/2020 · The November 13 ARTA regular meeting was a huge success. Many thanks to Dr. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez from The University of Texas](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022071604/613f4ffca7a58608c268d7cf/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
A R T A N e w s e t t e December 2020 page 3
ones include Zoom, Skype, FaceTme, Chat Rooms,
etc., but if you must meet in person, Dr. Russo
gives some advice. “It’s about weighing relative
risks versus the ability to minimize risks,” says
Thomas Russo, M.D., Chief of Infectious Disease at
the University of Buffalo. Here are some things to
consider from top public health experts.
• Consider Others. Who’s most vulnerable in
the group of people you hope to bring together? If
the risks to Uncle Joe, who has heart disease,
outweigh your ability to minimize risk, then wait
until next year, suggests Dr. Russo. “We love being
with our families; we all miss them terribly, but
we want to protect them,” says Marie Budev,
Medical Director of the lung and heart-lung
transplant program at the Cleveland Clinic. If you
are not feeling well before the holidays, she says,
“cancel, cancel, cancel.”
• Celebrate in Pods. Ellen Malooly Bowden,
61, created a holiday plan for her “bubble” in
Rochester Hills, Michigan. Bowden had an
autoimmune disease that led to a liver transplant
in 2012 and takes immunosuppressant drugs. Her
family celebration of 10 on the Sunday before
Thanksgiving included her daughter, a sister who
is a nurse, and another sister who is married to a
two-time cancer survivor. They were all extremely
cautious in their family pod. They all maintain
hermit lives and wear masks in public when it is
necessary to go out.
If you are traveling, your “bubble” (and any
“bubbles” you’ll be with) should all quarantine
and test, says Steve Mooney, who, after testing,
drove from Seattle to Oakland, where his parents
live, and arrived around the same time as his test
results.
• Drive. The lowest risk in terms of travel is
“in the car with your social bubble,” Dr. Russo
says. “Planes, trains, and buses all involve
increased risk because they involve interactions
with multiple other individuals.” Those travelers
may not have been following public health
guidelines.
• Get Outside. In a perfect world, you would
have separate social bubbles each at their own
table outdoors on a patio, with a separate table
for food, Russo says. Each social bubble would go
up as a group to get food. Weather may make that
impossible; but you can use the same system
indoors with tables spaced at least 6 feet apart.
• Use Inside Voices. “At my Thanksgiving
dinners there’s a lot of debating and a lot of
shouting,” says Cleveland Clinic’s Budev. “That’s
no different than a choir getting together and
singing and passing COVID along.” Dr. Russo
seconds the speak-softly approach. “The more
exuberant and loud you are, the greater the
number of respiratory droplets you generate and
the greater the distance they travel.”
• Stick to Basic Preventive Measures and BeFlexible. “Masks, distancing, and hand hygiene are
really pretty good,” Dr. Russo says. Wear masks
when you are inside the house and wipe surfaces
two or three times a day. If Thanksgiving leads to
a spike in cases a few weeks later, you should be
ready to change how you celebrate Hanukkah,
Christmas, or New Year’s gatherings.

Parade/Cleveland Clinic survey results.
Natural Remedies for Chronic Fatigue? At this time there is little evidence to
recommend any specific natural remedy as a
treatment for chronic fatigue. Dealing with a
condition such as chronic fatigue syndrome can be
challenging. There is a lot of hype about various
treatments and “natural” approaches. As with any
dietary supplement, talk to your doctor before
adding something new to your care program.
Some herbal products can interact with
prescription medicines or have other side effects.
Alzheimer’s: Ways to Help a Caregiver Alzheimer’s care is a round the-the-clock job.
When you offer to help an Alzheimer’s caregiver,
be specific—and gently persistent. General offers
of help can be hard for a caregiver to accept. If
you want to support a friend or relative who is
caring for a loved one, make a concrete offer. For
example:
Ø “I am going to the grocery store today. What
can I pick up for you?”
Ø “I have a couple of hours of free time
tomorrow afternoon. May I sit in for you
while you run errands or take time for
yourself?”
Ø “I doubled my meatloaf recipe so that I could
share it with you. I brought enough to last
you for several meals.”
![Page 9: Austin Retired Teachers Association · 11/12/2020 · The November 13 ARTA regular meeting was a huge success. Many thanks to Dr. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez from The University of Texas](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022071604/613f4ffca7a58608c268d7cf/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
A R T A N e w s e t t e December 2020 page 4 Ø “Do you need some laundry done? I can pick
it up today and bring it back clean tomorrow.”
Ø “Does your yard need to be mowed? I would be happy to take care of it this weekend."
Ø “I will be happy to take your dog (Max) for a walk tomorrow morning.” Decide if this caregiver needs logistical
support or emotional support. Both can be a big help. Reminder that the Healthy Living Survey is Due Before February 1, 2021
I will need to submit a report to our district health chairperson on how our local unit is addressing our comprehensive approach to health before February 15, 2021. I am, therefore, asking
that you please either submit the following completed health check form, the one located in your 2020-21 Austin Retired Teachers Association Yearbook (page 11), or on the ARTA local website (https://localunits.org/austinrta/). Please use U.S. mail or e-mail address given on this form (make sure to use my Gmail address and not Yahoo). I am also including the Google link to complete it on the website:
