Jakira, Gary Comer Campus, 8th grade

Something extraordinary is happening in Chicagos Austin and

Back o the Yards communities. In these neighborhoods where

ew quality educational opportunities exist, a group o students

and amilies have ound something special at a school called

    San Miguel.

Before coming to San Miguel, I was struggling in school, says Jakira, an 8th grade student at the Gary Comer Campus in

Austin. I felt as if the teachers did not care about my success. Here at San Miguel I have been given the opportunity to shine!I have found a love of my studiesbecause of my teachers.

The San Miguel model is based

    on a 300 year-old educational

    tradition developed by St. John

Baptist De La Salle in France.

He believed in serving the poor

by providing a quality education that

was rooted in aith, benefting the

whole child, and built on strong rela-

tionships between teachers, studentsand parents. Sixteen years ago San

    Miguels ounders were inspired to

continue in the ootsteps o De La

Salle, and what started as a classroom

in the dining room o a convent has

become a successul set o schools.

    San Miguel middle school students

are graduating grade levels above what they thought was possible by the

time they reach 8th grade, then they are moving on to competitive high

schools, graduating, and going on to college and getting jobs.

San Miguel Schools Chicago serves over 350 Latino and Arican

American students, graduates and their amilies each year at its Back

o the Yards and Gary Comer Campuses. Both schools are in struggling

neighborhoods where the rate o students eligible or ree and reduced

lunch is over 95%. Both neighborhoods also lack quality educational

alternatives. In 2009, only 77.6% o Chicago Public Schools 8th grade

students met or exceeded standards in Reading, according to the Chicago

Public Schools Ofce o Research, Evaluation and Accountability, while

100% o San Miguel Schools 8th grade students met or exceeded stan-

dards in Reading, based on Terra Nova tests. In addition, compared to

local schools, San Miguel students have a 40% longer school day, plus

additional extended day programs ater school and a year-round schedule.

According to one prospective parent, I want my child to attend San

Miguel because I have heard a great deal o good things about the

classroom sizes and that the learning process is awesome. I want my

child to get the best education possible and San Miguel can give him that.

San Miguel is a small school which can provide a great deal o attention

one on one. My son deserves to get a great education or less.

San Miguel is able to achieve success and overcome community

challenges by building relationships. Beore a student even enrolls at

San Miguel, the aculty and sta meet with parents to talk about the

commitment they all need to make together in order or their child to

succeed. The relationship continues through parent-teacher conerences

every three weeks, and through a Family Support Program that oers

services and workshops on parenting and lie skills.

For the student, relationships are ormed with a team o aculty and sta

that includes teachers, teacher aides, counselors, coaches, volunteers,

and school leadership. All o them are ocused on providing each student

with individualized attention and support, academic as well as social and emotional.

Upon graduation rom San Miguel, our

    commitment and relationships continue

    through the Graduate Support Program,

which oers resources like tutoring and

leadership activities to students as they

    navigate through high school.

The teachers and sta at San Miguel

are great, says Jorge, an 8th grader at

the Back o the Yards Campus. Theydedicate time during class and aterschool

to help me i I am having a difcult time

with a class or i I am going through a

    personal challenge. My teachers encour-

age me to do my best and to never give

up. I know that they are preparing me or

a successul uture. What I love most

about San Miguel is the opportunities that we are given not only to excel

academically, but also to grow as individuals.

Year ater year, the success o the San Miguel model is demonstratedthrough the success o its students and graduates. Students oten

enter 6th grade perorming at 2nd or 3rd grade levels, but by the time

they graduate rom San Miguel, they are perorming at the 8th grade

level and beyond. San Miguel graduates attend a variety o private,

charter and selective enrollment high schools throughout the city, and

achieve a cumulative high school graduation rate o 84%, compared to

    the Chicago city-wide graduation rate o 55%.

San Miguel believes in providing these educational opportunities at a

low cost to parents. The schools are 95% tuition-ree and rely on the

generosity o oundations, corporations and individuals to provide unding

or its programs. I you are interested in supporting San Miguels mission

o transorming lives and communities through education, commitment

and love, there are many ways you can get involved including:

    Making a Financial Contribution

Volunteering at one o the schools

Taking a student-led tour o the school to see

or yoursel the work that is being done

name is Shameka Wherry and I am currently

a sophomore at Chicago Talent. I will be apart o the frst graduating class in 2013!

There are many ways that Chicago Talenthelped me through my reshmen year withsuch programs as Ci ty Year, City Heroes, andparticipating on the girls basketball team.City Year is a great organization because itprovides peer mentors and tutors in everyreshmen class. They not only help the 9thgraders they also host tutoring sessionsor all students ater school. Through City

Year I was also able to get involved in CityHeroes during the weekends and participatein community and political discussions while

    gaining service-learning hours.

Another great reason to attend ChicagoTalent is class size. Our classes normallycontain no more than 25 students andthat really helps our teachers give us theindividual attention and help we need. Ourteachers also host weekly ofce hours orany students wanting additional help in theirclasses or one-on-one mentoring. This hasbeen especially helpul to me this year sinceI am now in several honors classes.

Chicago Talent also host several student

development opportunities through work-shops. Some o the workshops Chicago

Talent has hosted include programs andworkshops about cyber bullying, womens

workshops, and the AIM High program. Wehave also had a college day at Chicago

Talent where we research colleges andbegan investigating the college applications

process. At Chicago Talent we are workingevery day to prepare or a successul uture!

At Chicago Talent I have been able tobecome a leader! All the support providedmy reshmen year has helped make me eelconfdent as a student and a leader. This

year I am president o the student govern-ment. This has been a great opportunity orthe students at Chicago Talent to help makedecisions about the uture o our school.Since we attend a small school the deci-sions we help make on the student govern-ment may impact our school or many years

What does family have to doWith it? (almost everything!)

    W

hat does amily have to do with im-proving education? I asked that ques-

tion in this same space almost twoyears. Now ater two more years o worseningstatistics and more individual child pain I haveto say: Hello! Its all about the amily! This ismy cry or help to my ellow education serviceproviders, health proessionals, governmentofcials, and you: we must work harder tokeep Family Hope alive! I wrote two years agothat hope comes natural or children. Unlikeadults, they dont have to be convinced tobelieve in hope. Any hope. Adults however, have no problem promising children the betterlie that a good education is supposed to giveand then dash that hope only to revive it -re-

package it - every time an educational reormmovement or political cycle comes around.Children just want hope un-dashed andpromises kept! This is where amily comesin. Families sacrifce daily to keep hope alivethrough more tutoring and extras so that theirchildrens dreams have a chance. Its justwhat parents do.

It is so important that proessional provid-ers o extra school help attend to the humansacrifces o amilies including encouraginghealth maintenance o all amily members.

This extra attention gains more urgency when

servicing teenagers and grandparents. Mosto us can relate to an unmotivated and stub-born teenager can challenge ones liver. Andgrandparents can ill-aord anymore damage

to the liver beyond that already cause bymore years. At Dr. Bills Learning Centers we

include parents, siblings and grandparents inthe process o helping children help them-selves. We specialize in stress reduction orall aected by the challenged and challengingstudent.
