    Outline Itinerary

I met two Australian couples when we were all independently birding at Taman Negara, Malaysia back in March 2013, we got on well and formulated a plan for me to go birding with them both in Australia. The exciting prospect of birding trip to Australia was soon to be a reality. Dave and Sue are based in Adelaide, and Rob and Di are based in Brisbane so formed two distinctly different areas for bases for the trip. I owe them all a huge debt of gratitude for without their help, generosity and kindness (as well as putting me up, feeding me, driving me around, and showing me the birds!) this trip wouldnt have been possible. First up was South Australia for 17 days, followed by Queensland for 12 days. South Australia (November 1st 17th) with a brief morning trip into Victoria. Based in Adelaide: several locations around the city and further afield south down to Mount Gambier and along the Victoria border area, Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve, across west to the Eyre Peninsula and north into The Outback along the Birdsville Track up to Mungerannie Station.

Chris Steeles (http://chrissteelesbirding.blogspot.co.uk/) very kindly organised for us to get some nocturnal birding/photography on a farm at Freeling, SA this was a really enjoyable and interesting evening and resulted in some great birds! Thanks mate! Queensland (November 18th 29th) with a brief trip into New South Wales. Based in Brisbane: several locations around the city, down to Lamington, Sundown, and Girraween National Parks, finishing in the Lockyer Valley. Based in Cairns: several locations around the city, up to Kingfisher Park and the Atherton Tablelands, Daintree River Cruise, and finishing down at Etty Bay.

18.11.15 Brisbane Area (Mt Coot-tha) to OReillys (Lamington National Park); 19.11.15 OReillys (Lamington National Park) to Sheepstation Creek, NSW; 20.11.15 Sheepstation Creek, NSW to Sundown National Park, QLD; 21.11.15 Sundown National Park to Girraween National Park; 22.11.15 Girraween NP to Brisbane (via Lockyer Valley); 23.11.15 Brisbane Area evening flight to Cairns; 24.11.15 Cairns (Cairns Esplanade, Cairns Botanical Garden, Cattana Wetlands) to Kingfisher

Park; 25.11.15 Kingfisher Park, Daintree River Cruise, Mt. Lewis; 26.11.15 Kingfisher Park and Atherton Tablelands (Mount Molloy, Maryfields Farm, Yungaburra,

Lake Tinaroo); 27.11.15 Kingfisher Park and Atherton Tablelands (Mount Hypipamee National Park) to Etty Bay; 28.11.15 Etty Bay to Cairns, afternoon flight to Brisbane; 29.11.15 Brisbane area prior to late afternoon flight to UK via Adelaide.

Sheepstation Creek (left) and Daintree River Cruise (right) We went on a Daintree River Cruise tour with Murray Hunt (Daintree Boatman). Id highly recommend this trip: http://www.daintreerivertours.com.au/ - Murray is an excellent guide.

Trip Highlights On this trip I recorded 435 species; the majority of these were new families, or endemic species. Due to the number of new birds, and new families seen its difficult to pick out a single favourite bird. The Australian parrots were particularly exciting, to see breeding Scarlet-chested Parrot on my 2nd day in the country was very lucky and one of my best sightings, but there was just so many amazing parrots it was hard to know where to look at times! Gang-gang Cockatoo was impressive but then so were the common species too, like Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Rainbow Lorikeet!

  • Australia Trip Report November 1st-29th 2014 Andy Walker 2015 4 http://awbirder.blogspot.co.uk

Fairy-wrens were just as spectacular as I was hoping, but the more cryptic emu-wrens, grasswrens, heathwrens and fieldwrens were just as impressive, especially with the effort required to get some of them! To see my first albatrosses and penguins was great, as was seeing my first birds-of-paradise, bowerbirds and honeyeaters. Seeing such archetypal Australian birds as Emu, Southern Cassowary, Laughing Kookaburra, and Alberts and Superb Lyrebirds rated highly, Southern Cassowary definitely being one of my favourite birds of the trip. Some of birds in The Outback were great to watch too, such as Inland Dotterel, Australian Pratincole, and Gibberbird they took a lot of effort, but they were well worth it! Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher was also a reason for heading north and that was a huge highlight a stunning bird. The boat ride along the Daintree with Murray Hunt was also a highlight, with displaying Great-billed Herons and nesting Papuan Frogmouth showing well. It wasnt all about the birds though. I was lucky enough to get some incredible wildlife sightings (over 40 species of mammals and 40 species of reptiles), such as Platypus, Koala, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat, Short-beaked Echidna and a wide range of Kangaroos and related species, as well as a number of smaller endangered rodent-like mammals. Reptiles also featured heavily with dozens of cool species seen and photographed such as Tiger Snake, Death Adder, and Australian Scrub Python amongst others. Furthermore there was some very impressive scenery from lush rainforest, huge mallee forests, and barren gibber plains. Also seeing the Adelaide Oval and the Gabba rated highly hopefully I can get to watch some cricket at them next time!

Koala a real highlight of my first day in Australia!

Trip Summary Due to the nature of birding in Australia Ive taken a different format with this trip report from my usual template. Due to the nomadic nature of many of the birds across Australia theres little real point in me saying go to this location to see X, Y or Z because in all likelihood they wont be there! Obviously thats not the case for all species but it is for the majority of those I saw particularly in South Australia. So rather than giving a location by location write up like I usually do this report lists

the first location each species (and sub-species where known/assumed) was seen during my trip. I am happy to provide additional data on most species if anyone wants any further information.

Getting Around Flights: I flew out of Manchester (UK) in to Adelaide via Dubai with Emirates Airways/Qantas and flew back the same route. Had a couple of internal flights with a mix of Virgin and Qantas (Adelaide-Brisbane-Adelaide, Brisbane-Cairns-Brisbane). All flights ran smoothly and pretty much on time, internal flights were a reasonable price. My layovers in Dubai were around 2 hrs, these were just about long enough to make my transfers and grab a drink. Driving: Do not under-estimate the distances involved in birding around Australia it is HUGE. We did thousands of kilometres in the month lots of driving, on a range of road surfaces (note if you are hiring a vehicle some companies place restrictions on the surfaces you can/cant drive on). South Australia: We used Daves truck, with a long-distance fuel tank, and 4x4 capabilities. But most importantly it had a fridge for keeping the beer cold! Queensland: We used Robs 4x4 for the leg around Brisbane, and we hired a small car in Cairns forget who we hired it through now but it allowed us to go off the tarmac roads. Check around for the type of roads you want to be going on. Car hire was expensive; it was cheaper if an Australian was hiring the vehicle than me, so Rob hired it!

Accommodation/Food and Drink South Australia: We did a mix of camping and staying in motels. Mainly camping this was great. Often the camping entailed no tent, just Swag [bag]. So I was literally sleeping under the stars!

My Swag [bag] on the right. This was what I slept in for the majority of my time in SA

  • Australia Trip Report November 1st-29th 2014 Andy Walker 2015 6 http://awbirder.blogspot.co.uk

Dave and Sue cooked up some amazing meals while we were camping (and also back at their house in Adelaide). Its amazing what can be rustled up in the middle of nowhere! We also had a few really nice meals out here and there, including a couple of really nice Indian meals in Adelaide and Port Augusta. However the biggest eye-opener for me was the pie shops! We tried to sample as many as possible at most bakerys we passed and I think we succeeded! We stayed a few nights in motels/hotels here and there to break up the camping. The most interesting being the Mungerannie Station along the Birdsville Track in The Outback. A great place to eat, drink, and learn about the vast expanse that surrounded us. We also stayed on a working sheep station which was fun seeing how people live out in the bush. Camping in the bush was a great experience, there was a few occasions when I decided a tent would be the safer option, e.g. in the Middleback Ranges where we found a Peninsula Brown Snake, and two Death Adders (which are not commonly seen!) all of which are pretty deadly, and all within a KM or so of where we were staying the night they were obviously on the move! There was also a few times when the sheer number of spiders gave me the heebie-jeebies!

Too many spiders here so stayed in a tent! Beautiful sunrise on my birthday, bit nicer than what Im used to in the UK in mid-November! Queensland: Again a lot of camping around southern Queensland/NSW, and then a mix of camping, backpacker hostels and lodge (the world famous Kingfisher Park). Id been excited about staying at Kingfisher Park ever since meeting Rob, Di, Dave and Sue as they all totally raved about how great a place it was and they were not wrong. Certainly a great place to stay and very reasonable cost too loads of great wildlife including Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher. My highlight camping experience in Queensland was probably sticking my head out of my tent at Etty Bay and having my lifer Southern Cassowary walk right past! One of the interesting occasions was when we were at Sheepstation Creek where a couple of very vocal, possibly amorous Koalas were

  • Australia Trip Report November 1st-29th 2014 Andy Walker 2015 7 http://awbirder.blogspot.co.uk

making a right noise that added to the noises coming from the Greater Sooty Owl and Marbled Frogmouth made for an interesting night. Incidentally Greater Sooty Owl is possibly the best bird call out there! It sounds like someone setting off fireworks and someone getting murdered! A pretty scary noise when youre in the middle of a forest in the pitch black! In southern Queensland we mainly cooked ourselves when camping and also went to a really nice Asian restaurant in Brisbane, and a nice caf for breakfast one morning too, we also found a nice Pie shop near Lamington NP. We ate at a range of places in northern Queensland, mainly places with Fast Food in their names, though the little caf by the jetty for the Daintree Cruise was awesome! We brought some food in Cairns to cook ourselves up at Kingfisher Park, where there was a microwave to use which worked out well. The ice cream shop on the Cairns Esplanade is a must visit place too! In all seriousness McDonalds was really useful as it meant we could get free Wi-Fi and a cup of tea pretty much anywhere we were!

Very nice tea and scones after an excellent mornings birding on the Daintree River Ive included a lot of photos in the report, most were taken with my Panasonic Lumix FZ-200, with a couple off my IPhone 5s. Ive also included a couple of phones from Dave and Sue, and Rob.

Summary I had an absolute blast on this trip, would probably rate it as my best birding holiday and I owe both Dave and Sue (and Jenna and Laura), and Rob and Di a huge debt of gratitude for taking me into their homes and looking after me so well, for without them this trip would have not been possible, anywhere near as successful, or most importantly as enjoyable! Thanks to you all! Australia was more than what I was expecting it to be. I always knew it would be good, but I was just focussed on the birds. Now Im well and truly into reptiles too! I truly enjoyed everything about the country. Australia just gives so much great wildlife, scenery, food, people. There were so many highlights its difficult to pick a couple. Getting into The Outback rates very high (and hot take your breath away hot), my first Koala, Platypus, Kangaroo, Emu, Cassowary and Kookaburra are all moments Ill never forget. Im actually quite lucky as I will be heading back to Australia in October and November 2016 to lead a Birding Ecotours trip so very excited about that. If you would like any further information about the 2016 (or 2017) Birding Ecotours trips, or this trip please drop me an email to andywalker1000 AT hotmail.com subject Australia Birding Thanks, Andy 1st August 2015
