and clever Australian people, sowing the seeds of Sino-Australian friendship. Prior to the establishment of

diplomatic ties, China and Australia maintained people-to-people contacts in many fields. Following the estab-

lishment of the diplomatic ties, the relations between China and Australia had entered a new stage.

An important factor behind the steady development of the Sino-

Australian economic and trade relations is the fact that their econo-

mies are strongly complimentary. China is able to export labor-in-

tensive products and technology-intensive products such as the

launching of satellites. Australia abounds in natural resources and

its iron ore, aluminum, cereals and sheep wool enjoy good market in

China. China has been making an increasing amount of investment

in Australia, and vice versa. Two-way trade has been on the increase,

and the two countries command great potential in cooperation in the

field of science and technology.

Exchanges in Economy and Trade

Page 60: Australia China w

In 2003, the value of trade between the two countries reached

US$13.56 billion, an increase of 30 percent from the previous year.

Of this, Chinese exports to Australia were valued at US$6.26 billion,

a 36.6 percent increase; and Chinese imports from Australia reached

US$7.3 billion, an increase of 24.8 percent. At present, China is the

third largest trade partner of Australia (According to statistics re-

leased by the Australian side, the figures do not include those of

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), and Australia is the ninth

largest trade partner of China (according to statistics release by Chi-

nese side).

China is a country with a long history, while Australia is a multi-

cultural society. Both countries stress the development of national

culture and stand for exchanges and cooperation between different

cultures.

The past 30 years have seen cultural exchanges in diversified

forms continue, expand and achieve fruitful results. Chinese culture

has gradually penetrated deep into the social life of Australia, and

has been accepted by the main social strand of Australia. In the

Page 94: Australia China w

meantime, the Chinese people have come to understand and love

Australian culture. All these aspects serve to promote further devel-

opment of bilateral relations.

In the new century, China and Australia are working to develop

even more healthy and stable ties featuring an all-round cooperative

partnership. This creates more favorable conditions for deeper cul-

tural development. Cultural exchange and cooperation between the

Both China and Australia are located in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The two peoples have long maintained friendly ties. Over a century

ago, many Chinese crossed the ocean to reside in the beautiful land

of Australia. They labored together with the industrial and clever

Australians, sowing seeds of friendship between the two countries.

In the 30 years since China and Australia established diplomatic

ties on December 21, 1972, the two countries' relations have devel-

oped in an all-round way. Exchanges between the two peoples have

been further strengthened and their friendship deepened. This serves

to promote bilateral relations to develop in a deeper and more exten-

education have been crowned with fruitful results. Recent years have

seen more than 170,000 Australians visit China every year, and the

number of Chinese who visited Australia in 2002 surpassed 130,000.
