Parliament House in Melbourne, located at Spring Street in East Melbourne, has been the seat of the Parliament of Victoria, Australia, since 1855 (except for the years 1901 to 1927, when it was occupied by the Parliament of Australia).

In December 1855 construction began on the site in Spring Street, and the building was completed in stages between 1856 and 1929.

Being one of the major of places of interest in Melbourne, the pride of Melbourne, the Parliament House of Victoria is open for public visits. The Parliament House is kept open for the common people on the days they do not have a sitting. Free tours of the Parliament are held at 10am, 11am, 12 noon, 2pm, 3pm and 3.45pm from Monday to Friday.

The entrance steps and lamps were added, while William Guilfoyle took charge of the design and landscaping of the grounds surrounding the Parliament during the period 1888-92.

Located at 111 Spring Street in Melbourne overlooking the stately Parliament House and the beautiful Treasury Gardens, Windsor Hotel built in 1883 is Australia’s only surviving grand 19th century city hotel and only official "grand" Victorian era hotel.

St Patrick, the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne is a major symbol of the city. The church is near remarkable points of interest like the Victoria Parliament House, Fitzroy Gardens, Carlton Gardens, Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum.

The Gordon Reserve is a small triangle of land located in Spring St, Melbourne near the Parliament buildings containing the Stanford Fountain (1870), two memorials and five Canary Island date palms.

William Stanford (1839-1880) designed and carved the fountain from bluestone when he was incarcerated at Pentridge Prison.

The Gordon Reserve was originally part of the Parliament House grounds, but it became detached from these in 1863 and was called Carpentaria Place

The City of Melbourne Tree Policy adopted by Council in 1997 provides for the protection and care of all trees within the municipality’s streets and parklands. The Heritage Victoria Register protects a number of Council owned trees in the Fitzroy Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, Royal Exhibition and Carlton Gardens and Treasury Gardens.

Since 2005, the City of Melbourne has achieved a 60 per cent reduction in potable water use in parks, gardens and open spaces. This has been achieved through increased use of recycled water, the installation of 170 kilometers of drip-line irrigation to better deliver water to the tree roots and a program to place mulch under trees to maintain soil moisture.
