Getting to the cityIf you are arriving by plane you can take a taxi or bus to the city. The Canberra Airport Express shuttle bus offers services daily during peak periods. Taxis are available from the taxi stand at the airport and a trip to the city will cost approximately AU$30.
Public transport
Canberra has an excellent public bus system servicing all of the ACT. You will have a choice of buses to take to ANU, including one that stops directly in front of the College.

If you are under 18 when you arrive, you will need to live with an AHN homestay family. Alternatively, you can live with a Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) approved relative. Professional caregiver services can be arranged through Professional Student Care (pscaustralia.com.au), or International Student Alliance (studentguardians.com) if desired.
If you are a student visa holder currently enrolled in another institution in Australia, you are required to inform ANUC at least three weeks prior to the start of your program that you require the College to make the necessary welfare arrangements.
Guaranteed accommodation ANU guarantees accommodation in one of their Halls, Colleges, Lodges or other approved accommodation for students who are:
• over 18 in the Foundation Studies and Diploma programs, commencing in February
• graduating Foundation Studies students who have not taken the option earlier
• all undergraduate students in their first year and first semester at ANU who meet eligibility requirements.
While accommodation is guaranteed, ANU cannot guarantee that you will receive your first choice.

Student welfare supportANUC has two dedicated Student Support Officers who provide assistance and referrals for non-academic matters. If you have accommodation, personal, medical, or legal questions, you can see a Student Support Officer.
The Student Support Officers also work closely with individuals or groups of students identified as requiring additional support, such as students aged under 18, to ensure a smooth adjustment to college life.

Foundations of successChoose from a range of English language and academic pathway programs that are right for your academic level and the ANU degree you plan to study.
Foundation Studies (page 16)Each pathway in the Foundation Studies program has been created to offer a route into one of many Bachelor degrees, across different subject areas. Foundation Studies is designed for high school students aged 16 and over who require additional academic preparation and to further develop their English language skills in an academic environment.
ANU Express (pages 26-28) This is a fast-track study program for high-achieving students, which covers a broad range of subjects to give access to many degree programs at ANU. A focus on research helps to prepare highly qualified students for academic life and success on a shorter timescale than Foundation Studies.
ANU Diplomas (pages 30-35)These programs are designed for students who have completed high school, and possibly another year of study, but have not achieved the required grades for direct entry into ANU, or need further English language training. By successfully completing one of the diploma programs you can enter the second year of a Bachelor of Information Technology, Arts or Music.
Access English (page 36) ANU Access English is a 10-week intensive course with a strong focus on Academic English. It is designed to equip international students with the academic skills and knowledge required to transition successfully to postgraduate and undergraduate courses at ANU.
Academic English Preparation (AEP) (page 38)This program has been created to help students advance their proficiency in using English in academic settings and to develop the study skills needed for university.
We have a range of programs designed to prepare you to succeed at ANU.
What’s involved?Students enrolled in ANUC programs are provided with excellent resources for their work. Helpful and experienced academic staff are on hand to assist in their studies. As well as timetabled lessons, students in English courses and the ANUC Foundation Studies programs have supervised study time, during which they coordinate their own learning and assignments.

Pathways to ANU
The ANUC Foundation Studies programs provide excellent pathways to ANU. The programs are designed to prepare students academically for their intended ANU degree.
Foundation Studies
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Studies program, and subject to meeting ANU entry requirements, entry to your chosen undergraduate degree program is guaranteed. Depending on your academic qualifications you can study Foundation Studies Standard (2 semesters) or Foundation Studies Extended (3 semesters).
Foundation Studies StandardThe ANUC Foundation Studies Standard program consists of nine courses:
• Academic English
• Advanced Academic English
• Computer Applications
• six academic content courses.
Students are assigned to an academic stream according to their chosen future ANU degree.
What does a week look like?
• English courses are conducted four times each week, totalling eight hours
• academic courses are conducted twice a week, totalling four hours
• Computer Applications are conducted once each week, for two hours (for semester 1 students)
• students also undertake two hours per week of supervised study time.
Eligibility to progress into semester two is dependent on a student achieving a minimum of 50 per cent in all courses.
Foundation Studies ExtendedThe ANUC Foundation Studies Extended program comprises the following courses in the first semester, all of which are compulsory:
• Foundation English
• Language of Mathematics
• Communication Studies
• History Makers.
What does a week look like?
• Foundation English is conducted four times each week, totalling eight hours
• other courses are conducted twice a week totalling four hours each
• two hours per week of supervised study time.
A minimum grade of 60 per cent in each course is required to continue into semester two. The second and third semesters of the program follow the same structure and progress rules as the Foundation Studies Standard program.
AssessmentYou will be assessed throughout the program and in the end-of-semester final examinations. Students must pass final examinations in order to pass each course.
The assessment tasks used in Foundation Studies courses encourage the development of a range of skills. Assessment tasks may include listening and reading comprehension exercises, essays and reports, oral presentations and group discussions, research projects, mathematical and scientific calculations and laboratory work. There is a strong focus on critical thinking, problem solving and analysis.
It is recommended that students allocate at least the equivalent amount of time for class preparation, homework, assignments and self study for each course they are enrolled.

How are entry scores to ANU calculated?Successful completion of ANUC Foundation Studies occurs when a student passes all enrolled courses. Entry to ANU occurs when a student successfully completes the program, achieves a minimum grade of 65 per cent in Advanced Academic English and meets the grade point average set by ANU for entry to each degree program.
For students planning to enter degree programs in the ANU College of Law or College of Business and Economics, entry scores will be calculated based on the combined grade average of all six degree pathway-related academic courses, as well as Advanced Academic English.
For students planning to enter degree programs delivered by all other Colleges (Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Medicine, Biology & Environment, Arts & Social Sciences, Engineering & Computer Science, Asia and the Pacific), entry scores will be calculated based on the combined grade average of their top five academic courses, as well as Advanced Academic English.
Computer Applications and Academic English course grades are not included in this calculation; however, passing these courses is a requirement for successful completion of Foundation Studies. Foundation Studies Extended semester one courses are also not included in the ANU entry grade calculation.
ANU College of Business & Economics International Merit Scholarship Each year the ANU College of Business and Economics may award up to two half-tuition fee (50 per cent for one semester) sponsorships to eligible ANUC Foundation Studies students. Students must accept an offer of degree study in the ANU College of Business and Economics to be eligible.
The scholarship is awarded to students based on their overall academic performance in the ANUC Foundation Studies program.

ChemistryThis subject will provide the student with the basic principles of chemistry, covering a range of topics, including classification of matter, simple atomic structure, kinetic theory of gases and gas laws, understanding the periodic properties of the elements, chemical equilibria and introduction to organic chemistry. There is an emphasis on problems involving calculations in this course and all students must own and be familiar with a scientific calculator.
Computer Applications This subject is designed to provide students with the computer applications skills required for academic success in both their current studies and future university pathways. Core modules include word processing, spreadsheet and presentation skills using MS Office. Additional modules are chosen to support students’ academic assignments in Foundation Studies, and may include website design, databases, algorithmic problem solving or other relevant topics. Particular emphasis is given to online research and the effective use of academic referencing tools.
Critical Thinking and ReasoningThis course aims to develop the thinking skills necessary for successful analysis and evaluation of arguments through instruction in patterns of reasoning, informal logic, and analysis of texts. By the end of this course, students should be able to analyse and evaluate weak and sound arguments, identify common faults in reasoning and suggest counter arguments.
EconomicsThis subject is for Foundation Studies students intending to study an undergraduate course at the ANU College of Business and Economics. Students learn how economic theory can be applied to current events and issues, such as climate change and the global financial crisis, and how to present an argument making use of economic reasoning and statistical evidence. The course covers concepts such as supply and demand, economic growth, inflation and international trade.
Key Moments in Western CivilisationThe course provides a chronological study of the origins and nature of some important aspects of Western Civilisation including ideas and beliefs from the ancient world of Socrates and Plato, to twentieth century America and Martin Luther King. The course will focus on many historical periods, including the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Victorians and the American civil rights movement.
Legal StudiesThis subject is designed to prepare Foundation Studies students for first year undergraduate study, particularly in humanities or law-related disciplines. Students will learn how to construct a legal argument, resolve legal issues, conduct legal research, and express a point of view. Topics include an overview of the following: access to justice, legal systems around the world, criminal law, international law, environmental law, and technology and the law.
After studying Foundation Studies, you will be ready to join the first year of an undergraduate degree at ANU

Academic EnglishThe Academic English course is designed to equip international students with the skills and knowledge needed to transition successfully to the Advanced Academic English course and then to a first year university program. Guided by the National Standards for Foundation Programs, this course enables all students to develop their listening, reading, writing and discussion skills in an academic context.
AccountingThis is an introductory course that builds a student’s understanding of the purposes of Accounting, what an accounting system is, what major financial reports look like and how accounting information is used in business decisions. It takes theoretical concepts and applies them to real world scenarios, and encourages students to develop their language skills in a business context.
Advanced Academic EnglishGuided by the National Standards for Foundation Programs, this course will broaden students’ appreciation of the sociocultural and sociolinguistic elements of Standard Australian English and will enable students to refine their listening, reading, writing, discussion and presentation skills. Students will explore and develop different perspectives by analysing and evaluating a range of text types, responding to ideas, learning to take and defend a position and using scholarly material to produce high-quality written and spoken English.
AlgebraThis course provides a detailed study and application of equations and inequalities, graphs and various functions. Topics include sequences and series, mathematical induction and binomial theorem.
Australian StudiesThis course is intended to help international students to gain an understanding of some of the people, ideas and events that have shaped Australian society. This historical journey requires students to explore a range of sociocultural, political, economic and environmental issues.
BiologyThis course is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for an effective transition to a Biology major. The course covers the structure and function of cells and multicellular organisms, cellular processes and mechanisms that ensure the continuity of life, the processes and mechanisms governing heredity and population gene pool changes, and evolution and diversification of life on Earth. Students will acquire numeracy and language skills and practical experience in laboratory work.
CalculusThis course presents Calculus in a concise and meaningful way so that students can understand mathematical concepts and their connections to real-world problems and challenges. Students will receive an introduction to numerical analysis including L’Hopital’s Rule, continuity, differential calculus and integral calculus. All techniques are illustrated with mainstream applications in pure, applied and social sciences.
Study Courses are for both ANUC Foundation Studies and ANU Express, with the exception of Academic English, Advanced Academic English and Computer Applications, which ANU Express students do not need to study, and Research Methods, which is for ANU Express students only.

LinguisticsThe purpose of this course is to demonstrate diverse aspects of language by using various areas of study, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The course is aimed at students enrolled in either ANU Express or the final semester of the Foundation Studies Program.
PhysicsThis course is designed to equip international students with the skills and knowledge needed for an effective transition to a physics major. The course introduces students to the fundamental laws of classical mechanics and electromagnetism. Students will gain an understanding of the concept of energy and its transformations associated with motion in electric, magnetic and gravitational fields and will use algebraic and graphical representations to calculate, analyse and predict measurable quantities related to motion, gravitational effects and electromagnetic phenomena.
PoliticsThis subject provides a general introduction to politics as one key aspect of social organisation. Students are introduced to various definitions of politics and governance and are expected to investigate and analyse the evolution of political systems around the world. There is a strong focus on current political developments.
Research Methods (ANU Express students only)This course introduces students to the set of skills required to actively participate in university lectures and tutorials and to effectively prepare and competently execute academic writing tasks and research projects. During the first part of the course, students will be introduced to essential academic skills, including effective reading, listening and note-taking strategies, summarising, academic composition and referencing and citation. In the second part of the semester, students will be given the opportunity to further develop these skills by completing two pieces of academic writing - a research project and an essay. This will include a close focus on literature review and associated academic research skills.
StatisticsAlgebra is a pre-requisite for this subject. Students are introduced to the terminology and processes of first year university statistics courses. Topics include graphing distributions of qualitative and quantitative variables, working with density curves and normal distributions, sampling, experiment design and probability.
Twentieth Century HistoryThis course examines major global events, the causes and effects of World War I and World War II, the decline of empires and the end of colonialism. Specific areas of study can include the economic impact of the Great Depression and the changing status of women around the world. This course may also examine some of the economic and environmental issues that pose challenges for governments and international organisations.
Foundation Studies Extended
Communication Studies
Communication Studies introduces students to some of the theories, forms and functions of communication. The subject focuses on such concepts as verbal and non-verbal communication, film and media and the impact of the digital revolution. Students will take part in oral presentations and analysis.
Foundation English
The Foundation English course is designed to equip international students with the skills and knowledge needed to progress effectively to Academic English and Advanced Academic English which are offered in the second and third semesters of the Foundation Studies Extended Program. This subject is designed to provide opportunities for students to improve their grammar. Students will also prepare summaries and basic essays, developing their reading, listening, speaking and note-taking skills through a variety of sources.
History Makers
The course is designed to equip international students with the skills and knowledge needed to progress effectively to the Arts and Social Science subjects offered in the second and third semesters of the Foundation Studies Extended Program. The overarching theme of the Foundation Studies Extended History course is ‘Human Rights’. This course provides a chronological study of the people and ideas that have influenced the world’s civilisations, including ideas and documents from individuals such as Plato, Rousseau, Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King.
Language of Mathematics
The Language of Mathematics course assists students to become confident users of the language of Mathematics and mathematical concepts. This subject is designed to provide a historical context in which to gain an understanding of influential and interesting mathematicians and the legacy of their work.

ProgressionStudents are able to gain entry to the Bachelor of Arts program upon successful completion of the Diploma of Liberal Studies. To do this, you will have achieved a GPA of 4.0 out of 7.0. ANU Diploma of Music The ANU Diploma of Music is an exciting new pathway enabling students to progress to ANU and follow their passion. The diploma prepares students with the skills and knowledge required to progress into the second year of a Bachelor of Music.

The Bachelor of Music The ANU Bachelor of Music prepares you for the ‘portfolio’ career followed by most modern music professionals. A successful contemporary music career requires not only advanced skills in performance, composition, improvisation and other areas of creative practice, but also familiarity with music technology. It also requires the ability to work as an educator and facilitator or community music, and as a cultural entrepreneur.
This degree is designed to reflect music as it is understood and practiced in contemporary Australian society. This education experience covers all genres (classical, jazz, contemporary, folk and world music) and offers specialist courses across three majors (performance, music technology and musicology).
The transition from the diploma to the bachelor will allow you to complete a Bachelor of Music after only two additional years of study for the following majors:

This course will help you improve your English language skills in an academic setting and to develop the study skills needed for university.
ANU Access English is a 10-week intensive course designed to equip international students with the academic skills and knowledge required to transition successfully to courses at ANU.
Course contentANU Access English consists of 20 hours per week of face-to-face classroom instruction, with 12 hours per week dedicated to reading/writing components and 8 hours per week to listening/speaking components. In the ANU Access English course, you can expect to improve your:
• research and critical thinking skills
• academic reading and writing skills, including how to write an annotated bibliography and an academic essay
• listening and note-taking skills, including how to make notes in lectures
• presentation, discussion and teamwork skills, including how to deliver an oral presentation, how to participate in tutorial discussions and how to work on group projects.

Each 10-week period of study in AEP is designed to prepare you for further study at ANUC and then ANU. Preparation will include:
• Reading academic material
• Understanding lectures
• Expressing understanding of ideas through speaking and writing
• Thinking critically about ideas heard and read.
You must achieve a score of 60 per cent or above to successfully complete each level of AEP. No additional IELTS is required to progress to the ANUC Foundation Studies program or the ANU Access English course.
