Australian Airports AssociationComprehensive and frequently updated site induction processes, procedures and material, developed and maintained in consultation with all responsible agencies and incorporating all the relevant rules, regulations and Acts are some of the ways Aerodrome Owners and Operators may employ to ensure that preventable incidents are minimised.

This document has been prepared by the Australian Airports Association’s Airport Education Working Group to assist airports to prepare internal and external parties to access an airport. The document is, however, only for guidance and each Aerodrome Owner and Operator must satisfy itself that it is finalised and tailored to be appropriate for its own local circumstances. This document contains suggestions only as to some of the matters that might be included in site induction material. Users must not use the template “as is” or without considering all the relevant requirements.

We trust the contents will provide a useful resource and reference for Airport Educators.

• While working Airside you will be supervised by a Airport Works Safety Officer (WSO).

• It is important that you follow any directions given by a WSO.

• Directions given by a WSO must be strictly followed, if you don’t understand ask for clarification.

Work Zones

• Whilst working Airside you will have a designated work zone.

• Under no circumstances are you to leave the work zone without permission from the WSO.

Airside & Landside

• There is a perimeter fence around the airport.

If you are outside this fence you are Landside.

If you are inside this fence you are said to be Airside.

The Airside is a secure area and under no circumstances are gates to be left open or unattended.

Identification Cards

• Whilst Airside you must prominently display a valid Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) or Visitor Identification Card (VIC).

• All VIC’s must be returned prior to leaving the site.

Drugs and Alcohol

Airside is strictly a no smoking zone.

It is a federal offence to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while working on the airport.

If you are involved in a safety incident or accident you will be required to undergo additional drug and alcohol testing.


• Any loose items - including tools, drink cans, nuts / bolts or sunglasses - can get sucked into the engines and cause Foreign Object Damage (FOD).

• When carrying any loose material, such as garbage or wastepaper, the load must be covered so that nothing falls off.

Contractors are responsible for keeping their works areas secured, clean and tidy at all times.


Licences

At all times you must carry your State/Territory drivers license.

Any plant/machinery

licenses you are required to operate.

Airside Driving

• It is important that you read and understand the Rules for Drivers Operating Airside booklet.

• You may only drive unescorted airside if you have a Airside Drivers Authority for the area that you are working

• Any movements outside the work zone must be under the escort and supervision of a WSO.

Incident Reporting

• All incidents, including:

• accidents• fuel spills• and injuries

• which occur in any part of the Airport, must be reported immediately to an Airport Works Safety Officer on telephone XXXXXXXX.


Security

• XXX Airport takes aviation security very seriously.

• The Aviation Transport Security Act 2004, mandates all aviation security measures at XXX Airport.

• We are also governed by other State Government legislation and regulations.

• Please raise any security concerns you may have to XXX at XXXXXXXX.

Gates

• You must only use the gate that has been designated by the WSO.

• Never leave an open gate unattended or use any device to keep a gate open or unlocked.

• Once you enter through a gate you must ensure that it is closed and locked.

Aircraft Emergencies

• In the event of an aircraft emergency you will:

• 1) Stop work immediately• 2) Move any equipment to an

area designated by the WSO• 3) Move to a designated

assembly point• 4) Move when directed by

the WSO to landside.

• In the event of an aircraft emergency you will not:

• 1) Stop to collect your belongings

• 2) Take photos or video• 3) Delay the evacuation of

the airport in anyway.

Customer service

• Airline staff are responsible for passenger movements across the apron between aircraft and the terminal.

• Passengers always have right of way over airline and construction activity.

The exception is for safety and security reasons.

Make sure that passengers cannot get access to your tools and equipment.

Insurance

Before you work at the Airport please make sure that you or your employer’s Public liability and Vehicle insurance covers high risk areas.

Most business insurance does not cover working at Airports so do check that you are properly covered. Copies of policies will need to be provided as requested by the Airport Manager.


Well Being

You must ensure that you have all the correct PPE for the job.

If you' re tired or fatigued it is harder to concentrate. Be aware that you are more likely to make mistakes and take extra care.
