Reaching into the canvas bag beneath the harp trap, biologist Alex Kutt pulls out a dark little nugget of fur that slowly unfolds into a little bentwing bat. The trap, located at the head of a towering sandstone gorge in Queensland’s White Mountains National Park, contains a bumper haul – more than 30 bats from four species – bringing the tally for the park to eight species.

Alex was one of 23 scientists taking part in Australian Geographic’s seventh scientific expedition. Together, this diverse group was documenting the plants and animals living in this remote and largely inaccessible park, 240 kilometres south-west of Townsville.

White Mountains, with its maze of spectacular, unexplored gorges, was a perfect candidate for an Australian Geographic expedition. Organised every few years, these expeditions gather together a group of scientists from a range of disciplines in a little-studied part of Australia. Previous expeditions have taken us to Cape York Peninsula, Cooper Creek, Central Australia and south-western Tasmania, and discovered undescribed species, extended the ranges for known species and encouraged collaboration between scientists whose paths might not otherwise have crossed.

These expeditions, together with our support of scientific research, are helping to increase our understanding of this fascinating continent. Our Society is also dedicated to sharing this knowledge with Australians and the world, an aim we’re achieving through the Society’s journal, AustrAliAn GeoGrAphic, and our exciting new graphic science magazine, Newton. We’re also continually adding to our library of painstakingly researched and fact-filled books including our popular series of regional guidebooks and our handy new Glovebox Guides.

Australian Geographic, bringing Australia to you.
