ENSEMBLE

AHE BOARDDr Timothy Pascoe AMSkye McIntosh - Artistic Director Marco Belgiorno - Zegna AMTom Gregory

‘In 2015 we performed Beethoven’s 3rd Piano concerto with Neal Peres Da Costa. During one of the concerts, I experienced a moment of breathtaking surprise. Neal drew out of the fortepiano an amazing colour I had never heard before.I was astonished by this special, etherial sound, which resulted when Nealmeticulously followed Beethoven’s damper pedalling marks on the Viennese-stylefortepiano after Conrad Graf (c. 1820) - the type of instrument Beethoven had in mindfor this concerto. An audience member commented to me after the performancesaying: ” I had a sensation that Beethoven was in the room with us.” It is these small moments of musical bliss that inspire us, make us go on, uplifting uswith the discovery of some new contour or dimension in the music we love.’

“I know well that music is made to speak to the heart of man, and this is what I try todo if I can; music without feelings and passions is meaningless.” Luigi Boccherini, 1799.

AHE begins 2016 aiming straight for the heart with Boccherini’s exquisite Stabat Mater. Special Guest Sara Macliver will make this performance unforgettable. We will also performwith her some of Mozart’s most loved soprano arias.

Our second program features chamber music for ute and strings performed in music salonsof Vienna in the late 18th century. Vienna, the centre of classical music at the time, nurtured many great composers, including Mozart. His great quartet, ‘The Homeister’, is a giant amongst classic chamber music works. Homeister, Mozart‘s friend was himself acomposer. We feature his lush C minor ute quartet as well as works by Albrechtsberger(Beethoven’s teacher) and Vanhal.

Mid year we have our most exciting project to date. A full orchestral program of Mozartand Haydn with cellist, Daniel Yeadon, performing Haydn’s C major cello concerto. This concert will mark our rst performance at City Recital Hall, Angel Place and also thelaunch of our debut ABC Classics recording.

Featuring twice in the role of Musical Director as well as keyboard soloist, our wonderfulcolleague and conductor, Dr Erin Helyard, will perform Mozart’s keyboard concerto no14 in E at major, returning in December to perform CPE Bach’s G minor keyboard concerto.

Our Beethoven concerto project will continue with historical expert, Dr Neal Peres Da Costa, playing the 4th piano concerto. Beethoven himself made sketches for a chamber versionof this piece. We will present a reworking of that version. We will also perform a chamberversion of Beethoven’s second symphony arranged in 1805.

The highlight of the year for me, and I hope you will love it, is our nale in December: ‘Haydn’s Passion’. The program is inspired by the Sturm and Drang (Storm & Stress)movement and features both CPE Bach and Haydn. This music is designed to shock, and isusually in a minor key. Australian historical autist, Melissa Farrow, will feature in one ofCPE’s greatest works, the D minor ute concerto. Haydn’s symphony ‘La Passione’, his onlyorchestral work in the key of F minor, closes out the year in dramatic fashion.

We cannot wait to present these programs to you and we hope to see you at the concerts!

Our ENSEMBLE“A concert experience with the Australian Haydn Ensemble isone where the carefully and creatively structured programmeboth delights and educates.”SYDNEY ARTS GUIDE 2014

The Australian Haydn Ensemble oers an intimate concert experience where audiences engage with the musicians and the music, enjoying the nuance of period instruments from a close perspective.

Under the artistic direction of principal violinist, Skye McIntosh, the AHE has developed its own ourishing series at the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room with virtually all concerts sold out over the past 2 years.

Performing on classical period instruments, the group has quickly built areputation for interesting and unusual programming. Its rapid success has established it as a key organisation in the Australian musical community.

The Ensemble is versatile and performs in a number of guises from quartet up to full-sized chamber orchestra. Players enjoy presenting programs that bring to life elements of historical performance that are seldom explored to their full extent, performing works of composers both loved and lesser known.

AHE launches 2016 with a Boccherini and Mozart program built around Boccherini’s exquisite Stabat Mater featuring our special guest soprano, Sara Macliver.

Aria award-winning Sara Macliver is one of Australia’s favourite and acclaimed sopranos. She is a leading expert in baroque performance and her pure and elegant style will entrance you in these wonderful works of Mozart & Boccherini.

Enchanted by the Gredos Mountains of Spain, far from the traditional musical centres of Europe, Bocherinni’s music is characterised by astounding optimism, colour and warmth avoured with Spanish folk music.

Mozart’s operas are amongst his most loved works. Sara will sing selections from The Magic Flute and Don Giovanniaccompanied by a chamber ensemble of ute and strings. A wonderful treat to start the year!

Vienna’s cultural magnetism was unrivalled in the late 18th century. This program explores works presented in the nest Viennese salons, such as that belonging to the famous patron of Beethoven, Gottfried van Swieten.

Mozart’s friend, Homeister, became one of Vienna’s most popular and enterprisingmusicians. Interestingly, as one of the most inuential music publishers of the time, he printed works by all of our featuredcomposers. His ute quartet in C minor will make for a stormy start to the evening. Mozart’s quartet K449, dedicated to Homeister, earned Mozart praise at the time for its ‘re of the imagination’, and is still considered to be one of his nest. Albrechtsberger, a teacher of Beethoven, was inuential in Vienna. This underrated composer’s string quartet is an overlooked gem, with a fugue rivalling even those of Haydn’s Op. 20 quartets.

Arguably one of the most extraordinary Viennese soirées ever, it included Haydn, Mozart, von Dittersdorf and our last featured composer, Vanhal, a prolic Bohemian composer. We end this program with his resplendent ute quintet in B at major.

One of Australia’s nest keyboard players, historical expert, respected musical director and co-director of Pinchgut Opera, Dr Erin Helyard, leads this jubilant concert of classical masterworks and is soloist in Mozart’s piano concerto no.14.

Historical expert and cellist, Daniel Yeadon, joins AHE again as soloist following his brilliant performance of CPE Bach’s A minor concerto last year. Haydn’s cello concerto in C Major, despite being one of his most performed works for the cello, is rarely heard on period instruments. This will be a treat for audiences to hear this beloved work as originally played.

Helyard’s “energetic and inspiringleadership” combined with the “precise and elegant playing” of the AHE in two early Haydn symphonies should make for exciting listening.

This concert also marks two wonderful milestones for us: our rst City Recital Hall performance; and the launch of our debut ABC Classics recording.

Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto, full of beauty and majesty, is the perfect way to experience the sensitive and historically informed keyboard playing of Dr Neal Peres Da Costa, whose monograph, O the Record: Performing Practices in Romantic Piano Playing (Oxford University Press, New York: 2012) has been hailed as “engaging and thought provoking” …and “a book that no serious pianist should be without.”(Limelight Magazine) It was also honoured by Alex Ross (music critic of The New Yorker and author of The Rest is Noise) as a notable book on his 2012 Apex List.

We present Beethoven’s 4th piano concerto as part of an ongoing AHE cycle exploring Beethoven’s piano concertos in chamber format, a well-loved practice in the Classical and early Romantic periods. This year we are using Beethoven’s own sketches as the basis for a new chamber version of the work.

Neal Peres Da Costa will perform on a fortepiano after Conrad Graf (c.1820),generously made available by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

We also present an Australian premiere of an 18th century chamber version ofBeethoven’s second Symphony, recently discovered in the British Library.

Directed by Dr Erin Helyard from the keyboard to nish the year, we go over to the dramatic side of CPE Bach and Haydn.

The program contains four worksreecting the 18th century ‘storm and stress’ movement. Often discussed in the context of literature, such musical works are often in minor keys and exhibit dramatic characteristics.

CPE’s D minor ute concerto, one of his most virtuosic and colourful, willshowcase the exquisite and pure sounds of Australia’s leading period instrument autist, Melissa Farrow.

The G minor harpsichord concerto will be performed by our esteemed colleague, Dr Erin Helyard, preceeded by a stormy E minor symphony for strings and winds.

As the nale of our 2016 season we present Haydn’s La Passione symphony. His only orchestral work in the key of F minor, this work illuminates the darker side of this otherwise sunny composer.
