Lauretta Stace CEO Fitness Australia

Previous award recipients have been able to celebrate and promote their success with their customers, team and industry peers. As well, all nominees have been able to learn from others, grow and

further develop their business as a result of engaging in the awards process.

In 2012 we are highlighting the concept of quality because we believe that this is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry. The change in this years’ awards process is aligned with Fitness Australia’s development of the industry quality framework standards which will continue over the next few years. This approach, based on a rigorous and transparent assessment process, also provides a direct link between quality standards in the industry and the achievement of an award of excellence.

This year, Registered Exercise Professionals will also be asked to ‘tell their story’ and demonstrate how they have improved the health and fitness of their client(s). These inspiring stories will be recognised and celebrated at the annual gala dinner. Over time, we envisage that this will become an important and powerful way to demonstrate the value that these professionals bring to the community.

On behalf of everyone at Fitness Australia, I would like to extend my congratulations to all the award nominees who have demonstrated their commitment to enhancing industry standards and reputation through quality service provision.

ThE AwARdS OF hONOuR PROgRAm

The momentum behind our efforts to achieve our vision is also the result of commitment and hard work by talented people who have volunteered their time and expertise to create an association the fitness industry can be proud of.

Fitness Australia emerged from a federated model to a national body over a decade ago. For many years, Fitness Australia and the state and territory associations were ‘staffed’ by volunteers who were passionate about the advancement of the industry. These efforts have led to the establishment today of a highly regarded national industry association.

Fitness Australia is proud to provide recognition of the important contributions of industry leaders and champions through the Awards of honour Program. This program consists of three categories of awards:

Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

Q: why do you think being on a Fitness Australia Board or Committee can make a difference to the Fitness Industry?A: Fitness Australia has really stood up to the challenge of creating a vision and strategy to improve the quality of our industry. It is important that the voice and opinion of the industry itself is heard and can influence the development and implementation of that strategy. Being part of the Board or a committee enables the individuals to contribute to the development and growth of the fitness industry.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: Three key factors. One is a Quality Assurance process that ensures that fitness businesses provide a great service to the community. The second is the skilling of our workforce to deal with the changing health of the population. The third is recognition of the fitness industry as a legitimate part of the mainstream health services sector.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: The industry's diversity and competitive nature are one of its greatest assets. It is important that a structured process is developed to ensure a logical, consistent and effective education journey aimed at meeting the changing needs of our community. A targeted education strategy results in a more confident, capable and professional workforce.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation?A: To invest our resources in improving the very industry that we belong to. If well managed, our efforts can create changes and opportunities for more rewarding work, greater financial remuneration and greater influence in the well-being of the community. I strongly believe that Fitness Australia is the right organisation to manage and direct those efforts towards a healthier and fitter future for our nation.

Nominations for this award are sought from amongst the Regional Industry Councils and the Council of the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: I recognise the challenge that faces new employees, employers and training providers who need to continuously reinvent the wheel unless there is a channel for sharing. I share with people what I know works and doesn’t work and the best chances for success with any new product or program.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: Firstly a strategic re-alignment of the fitness industry to strengthen the perception that the fitness industry is a legitimate part of the health care profession rather than being seen as part of a recreation model only. Secondly, a focus on the positive economic benefits the fitness industry continues to deliver to the Australian population as a whole.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: Increased regulation; more accountability from Registered Training Organisations to ensure a higher level of competency is guaranteed and lobbying the Federal government to achieve FBT reform.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation?A: To place a greater value on themselves and the contribution they make to the Australian community.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: Primarily maintaining the quality and standards of training within the fitness industry.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: The industry needs to see our clients within a holistic framework. with current research looking at the plasticity of the brain the value of exercise from the beginning to the end of life is of crucial importance.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: Providing safe fitness spaces with the guidance of Registered Exercise Professionals.

Q: What words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation?

A: That Registered Exercise Professionals are not fitness fanatics but educational change agents. we need to see change for our clients as a process (awareness, understanding, commitment, action and support). we need to provide quality training and maintain high standards within our industry.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia? The desire to have the fitness industry better viewed by the general public and government for the role it plays in helping people to become more fit and healthy in their daily lives.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?Overcoming the public’s perception of the fitness industry as an expensive option in achieving good health and fitness. documenting and publishing findings relating to people who have been regular industry users, then telling the stories of how it has changed their lives to a National audience.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?maintaining a focus on the client/member is the most important element as well as understanding the outcome desired by each.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation?Fitness through exercise is not an end in itself. Identify how being fit will make a difference in your client/member’s life and identifying the tangible benefits they will experience. Reinforce how maintaining that fitness will make an ongoing difference in how they live especially with respect to being able to better cope with the physical and mental challenges in their world from being fit and healthy.

Q: when you were actively involved with the fitness industry what was your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the industry & Fitness Australia?A: I was actively involved in the fitness industry between 1978 and 1990. my motivation back then was purely the safety of participants and the reputation of an industry that could do more for community health than any medical system but was in danger of losing large numbers of people through dangerous practices by untrained instructors.

Q: what did you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: Just like every profession, continuous education and the presence of a professional body is the key to developing and maintaining high standards, so I congratulate Fitness Australia on the work they are doing.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?I was on the first elected Fitness Queensland Board and stayed there for 7 years. why? The fitness industry has so much potential to enhance general health and wellness in Australian lives and this will only be achieved through passion and unity. governments only recognise a united industry and if we are to lobby from a position of strength, it must be with one strong voice!

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?I believe our industry should provide opportunities for people to stay strong, stable and able from childhood to maturity and, as an industry, we need to invest time now to understand that within a decade the largest

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia? To be part of giving the Fitness Industry one collective voice to improve the participation rate of Australians in making educated healthy lifestyle choices & exercising properly, thereby growing the Industry which I have become so passionate about.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia? It is important that the industry, with support from Fitness Australia, step out of the shadow of other Allied health industry players and

international market for the fitness industry will be seniors’ fitness. The scope of this vision extends to programs for children and adults as a preventative measure.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?I believe we need to find ways to network, collaborate, learn and share with other leaders within our industry, and to look outside our industry for best practice in other successful businesses/fields.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation? Be prepared to have strong points of difference which you are passionate about. Attend industry conventions learn and network, read extensively both from industry sources and relevant material outside the industry. Create, mentor and train your Team.

while working collaboratively with them, stand tall and independently as a legitimate, equal co-contributor in the provision of preventive health to the public.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?Consumer awareness of the disparity in quality along with consumer choice (competition) will inevitably enhance professionalism and standards. The industry in concert with Fitness Australia needs to continue to create the benchmarks and foster that awareness and competition.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation? Be what you promote, do it for the right reasons, work hard and be nice to people.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: The benefits for physical and mental health, for all age groups of the population.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: Increased educational material about fitness for home use; strengthening the relationships between school physical education and the fitness industry and meeting the specific needs for different age groups.

Q: what has been your motivation for voluntarily committing your time and expertise to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: It is a part of our professional duty to give back to the industry we are involved in. I have kept that as part of my ethos for 30 years. It has been very rewarding and humbling to be one of the game-changers especially during a time of so much change that was occurring in the fitness industry in the late 1990s.

Q: what do you believe is important for the future development and positioning of the fitness industry and Fitness Australia?A: Firstly, raising the bar in the training and education and registration standards. Secondly, the industry needs to become more research focused. Thirdly, continuing to make a real difference at the grass roots level throughout the community.

Q: The fitness industry is diverse and highly competitive. what do you believe to be the most important elements for enhancing professionalism and standards of service provision within the industry?A: Firstly to network and learn from those in the fitness industry and those outside the industry e.g., allied health sector. Secondly find a niche market and be the best you can be to serve that market and finally focus on client outcomes, not yours.

Q: what words of advice would you pass onto other people in the industry who may wish to make a contribution to the fitness industry and Fitness Australia in achieving a healthier and fitter nation? A: volunteering at least one hour a week to a marginalised or disadvantaged group would be a meaningful contribution in helping Australia become a healthier and fitter nation.

Fitness Australia engaged an independent company with expertise in quality systems, to lead the evaluation team. This company have been responsible for the assessment of all applications as well as telephone and site-visit verification processes and reporting. A risk management specialist from guild Insurance was also engaged to assist with the on-site audit process.
