(..,t l-' FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Welcome to Season '84! The Riverina Football League, this year

sponsored by Carlton NSW Ltd., is set for possibly its best ever year with the opening round of matches to be played this weekend.

At this early stage it appears as though the competition will be the most even on record with all clubs believing they are strong contenders for a finals berth.

There will be many new faces in the League this year and this augurs well for the Winfield representative season.

Newly appointed RFL coach Barry Ough and co selectors, Bernie Pattison, Greg Sheather, Ray O'Connor and Ross Elwin are wished all the best for the 1984 season.

Players from the Riverina have been right behind the league in recent seasons

and no doubt this trend will continue in 1984.

Unfortunately League president Mr Frank Gaynor has been farced to undergo heart surgery and could be out of action for quite some time. We wish Frank a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on deck before too long. This will place the League executive under more pressure and all possible assistance from clubs would be greatly appreciated.

This year the RECORD will be giving away several thousands of dollars worth of prizes and we are extremely appreciative of the support of advertisers.

Powers Australia, Faulkner and Just Football are donating prizes during the year and we urge Australian Football supporters to support the advertisers in this programme in whatever way possible.

You will probably notice the scorecard is not on the back cover as in previous years . . . we have moved it to inside back of the booklet to allow a new advertiser to join our publication. Wagga-based Powers Australia have provided a full-colour advertisement to appear a few times throughout the season.

◄ OUR COVER: Collingullie's centreman Claude Jackson sprints clear of Temora's Paul Breust.

Riverina Football League

Firstly allow me to congratulate all ten RFL teams for their pre-season hard work which has been applied by all Clubs.

Congratulations also to my Executive friends who have been very busy assisting with the VFL Country Day game, etc., which was a huge success and a great boost to our code. The profits from this popular day will be poured back in junior football by the Riverina Council. My thanks to Mr. L. O'Brien and John Wright who again have undertaken to manage our affairs in that direction.

I wish all teams every success in the season ahead; also our RFL team in the coming Winfield Championships which will be under the control of Barry Ough from Wagga Tigers.

I have much pleasure in welcoming the new players to our league and wish them the best.

Frank Gaynor President R.F.L.

HERALD SHIELD

A WINNER

A record 216 schools will participate in the Herald Shield Secondary Schools competition in 1984.

The competition, which is in its eighth year, is open to boys aged 18 years and under who attend Secondary Schools throughout Victoria and southern New South Wales.

Early matches are played between schools within each VFL club's zone. They are organised by club Country and Metropolitan Development Officers.

The later stages of the competition are played under lights as a preliminary to A.F.C. matches at VFL Park on Tuesday nights. They are replayed the following Saturday morning on HSV Channel 7.

The VFL gratefully acknowledges the sponsorship of the Herald and Weekly Times which has supported the competition since 1977.

Along with the Victorian Football League and the Junior Football Council, they are also sponsoring the

Victorian schoolboys team's tour to Ireland in May. This team was chosen on the basis of perfonnances in the Herald Shield competition last year.

The League is also indebted to Adidas who provide playing gear for the boys.

The Herald Shield competition is a valuable breeding ground for potential VFL players and is an important part of the League's Promotion and Development scheme.

Local schools which wjj/ be participating include Billabong High (Culcairn), Narrandera High, Leeton High, Wade High (Griffith), Temora High, Wagga High, Mt. Austin High (Wagga) and Kooringal High (Wagga).

Recently a team was selected which comprises only players who have played in the Herald Shield Competition. It is as follows: Bae/cs: Phil Egan (Richmond), Gary Pert (Fitzroy), Tim Darch (Geelong); Half-/Jocls: Neale Daniher(Essendon), Mark Kellett (Footscray), John Kennedy (Hawthorn); Centres: Michael O'Sullivan (Melbourne), Spiro Kourkoumelis (Carlton), David Rhys-Jones (Swans); Halfforwards: Tony Furey (N. Well today heralds the com-mencement of the 1984 football season. From all reports II will be a very mterestmg year wllh the

BLACK. influx of new players together YELLOW SASH with young players progressing

through the ranks to senior status.

To our own club I would like to welcome all new players, particularly our new coach Barry Ough. Every player MUST get behind Barry , our Second XVIII coach Greg 'Scatters' Sheater and new Under I 9s coach Alan Parr. There has been a lot of comment over the summer months that the Tigers are gone for all money in 1984 following the loss of eleven senior players from last year. All I can say is if every player pulls his weight and gets behind his coach we will be right up there in September.

The club has already commenced the season by performing well in trial games and climaxed last Saturday night by a top dance at Uranquinty.

Well what can I say about the importance of todays game. Arch rivals Coolamon. The Grasshoppers have been our undoing in the finals since the new league was formed. But today will be the start of a new era at the Wagga Tigers. A win is a must to all grades .

Well here we are on the brink of another football season and it still only seems like yesterday when we were inhaling that gloriously intoxicating smell of sue- GREEN. WHITE v cess last September.

I doubt if there has been a finer contest on the N arrandera Sports ground than the tied Grand Final and the replay was only marginally inferior {but the result infinitely more satisfying).

In both grades we scaled the summit in 1983 and there is no doubt that we have the nucleus of player personell to do it again. With the departure of a couple of older players it's up to the younger brigade to carry the torch.

If 1983 was the year of retribution, then 1984 is the year of challenge.

Let's set out to do what no past Coolamon side has ever managed - win back-to-back premierships and today against the Tigers we can take the first step along that long road towards September.

Let's have two more in Eighty-four!

Today another football season commences and hopefully this season will be more fruitful than last for the Imps.

We welcome a number of new BLUE. GOLD v

players under coach Peter 'Flash' Belford - Darwin imports Peter Munro, 'Nuds' Cammarano, Brett Edwards and Clay Miller; from Boree Creek, Joe Hopwood, Rob Barrett and Rowland Heckendorf and Mick Connop from Deniliquin, may they enjoy their stay with our club.

Today we travel to Ardlethan, this match is always a close match. Our form in the three trial matches has been excellent, and with a blend of experience and junior players in our team, we should have a successful first match.

Our committee and supporters wish the players all the best today and throughout this season.

BROWN & GOLD STRIPES

The 1983 season ended on a sad note for the club when we lost the Grand Fmal replay - a belated congratulations to Coolamon . But we' re reanng to go again and show all the other teams that we'll be a force to beat in '84.

Congratulations and best wishes must go to our three new coaches Tony Turner, Steve Smith and Barry Suckling. We know all the players will get behind you and give their utmost throughout the coming season.

Special thanks must go to our sponsors, in particular Mr. John Fleming.

During the off-season three new junior Hawks arrived on the scene, unfortunately only one was a footballer! Congratulations Mark & Therese Crouch on the arrival of Kate, Chris & Debbie Chamberlain for Amy and John & Jan Maskell on the arrival of Julian .

The Social Committee have been working hard organising functions for the club, the first one being a Casserole and Entertainment Night at the Thomas Blarney after todays game - everyone most welcome. Next Thursday night (April 19) there will be a Guernsey Presentations at the Thomas Blarney Restaurant for the three senior teams, it will commence at 8 p.m. and the cost is $5 per head which includes supper. No doubt by now you will have heard about the Players Talent Night on Friday 11th May at the Thomas Blarney at 7 p.m. Cost is $IO per head, includes supper - should be very entertaining! Also keep in mind Saturday June 2 when we'll be holding a Country & Western Night at Collingullie Hall. Cost is $15 per head and this includes food, drink and bus fares.

First up we meet Turvey Park and we' ll be looking to start the season on a winning note in all three grades.

The 1984 season has started , but not without a few problems. The main one - an acute shortage -of players in Wagga a nd surrounding districts. There is no doubt in my mind that there are too many football clubs, especially in our area. The obvious solu-

RED, WHITE&: BLUE

tion as I see it is for neighbouring clubs to amalgamate , thus relieving the pressure on clubs, which are hightened by player shortages. The shortages only weaken the standard of our game and increase the bargaining power of the players. This bargaining power would be reduced if clubs were flush with players. Another area causing problems early in the season is cricket, surely the cricket season could start earlier or at least push a few games through in the middle of the season so we do not once again have cricket versus football in April.

On a sad note we were shocked to hear of the passing away of one of the most popular Turvey presidents in my time Jim Egan, our condolences to Jim's family.

On a brighter note a sincere welcome to new senior coach Gerald Pieper , assistant coach Dave Johnston, skills coach Greg Carroll, reserves coach John McGinn, Under 19s coach Garry Mattingly, and all old and new players.

Finally we would like to wish all RFL teams a successful and injury-free 1984 season.

Another season begins and as usual we say a big welcome to our new players and hope you have a happy and successful season with the Griffith Swans. Hello again to

WHITE, RED v our regulars of all grades, we wish you all a happy, successful and mjury-free season.

We wish our three coaches the very best for the season, Bob Greenwood non-playing coach for his second season with the 1st 18, Roy Agresta, after many years playing 1st grade, now coaching and playing with 2nd 18 and Len Threlfell who coached the U19s in 1979-80 and club worker over many years will again coach the U19s in '84. Good luck to these men and their teams.

The new committee and social committee have been active through the off-season in preparation for the '84 season and in future additions social dates will be publicised. We hope you will all support the efforts of our hard working social committee.

To 'Owen Toyota', who are our major sponsors for the next three seasons, we say a sincere thank you. Many thanks also to the many people who support us year after year both financially and by attending our functions regularly, we need you .

Firstly I would like to congratulate Col Anderson on his appointment as 1st VXIII coach for season 1984. Col , who represented the R.F .L. last season , ■ has instilled team-spirit back to RE~AsvHvot~~iRs

our club, something that has been missing the past few years.

Also I would like to welcome David Pledger, Jerry Wilkins, Peter Brereton, Greg Geltch , Garry Burkinshaw, Neil Finch and Dean Knight to our club; also back this year is Wayne McPherson after a year in the wilderness.

This season the L.A.F.C. will be holding a function after each home game in our clubrooms, and Barbecue tea will be available as well as refreshments. We will also be having a live band in attendance. Visiting clubs are invited to attend these after-game functions.

Congratulations to Ross Elwin and Len Clare on being awarded Life Membership at our Jumper Presentation Night recently. Both Ross and Len are worthy receipients of such a high honour. Both are still actively involved in our club, and we hope they remain same for years to come.

Nuggett Evans who returns home. Both will be big assets to the Club. On the debit side we have lost Brent Daly, Tony Lingard and Laurie Gibson, who looks like sticking to his decision to hand the boots up.

Our executive remains the same, with Barrie Logan , President ; Mick 'Cleo' Howe, Secretary and Ken Warran , Treasurer. Tom Carroll continues on as U19s coach , whilst a reserve grade coach is yet to be appointed (at time of writing) and Rocky O'Connor 1s trying, third time lucky , with the firsts, ably assisted by Mark Fraser and Nuggett.

The club sheep were shorn recently with plenty of helpers in attendance. Many thanks to all those workers as well as the farmers who take these sheep. Again a big thanks to all the district for their great contributions to make up a very successful produce drive to kick off the season on a high note. Silver Circle tickets are now on sale from any committeeman.

Today we welcome Ariah Park in our opening game and let's hope we live up to the slogan "The Lion will roar in '84"

II To our new coach Hans Heys- GRi~i~~iM.

Stratton and his assistant Phil GOLD LETTERING

Reid we extend a hearty welcome and hope that your stay with us will be a happy and successful one . We also welcome back Tom Jones and Chris Daniher, two recruits who know when to stick to a good thing! To all our local regulars I hope your're all fit and ready for a big year and ready to follow the respective coaches.

Although being defeated two out of three occasions in our trial matches, the losing margins in both cases were small and could have hone either way . We played good football and are combining well as a team and look like posing an ominous threat to the Premiership this year.

It's a new year, a new season and a new start for the Bombers. Let's begin our march towards the finals right from the first whistle by taking the points from the Lions today.

VFL DRAW Round 3: SATURDAY, APRIL 21:

Essendon v Collingwood; North Melbourne v Footscray; St. Kilda v Swans; Carlton v Geelong; Melbourne v Hawthorn; Fitzroy v Richmond.

SYDNEY SCENE with Swans rover Steve Wright

SWANS v MELBOURNE The first fifteen minutes was very even with both sides applying pressure. At the fifteen minute mark the Swans broke away with superb marking by Rhys-Jones, with Hawke and Chilcott reading the ball off the packs well. The Swans finished the quarter brilliantly kicking seven goals in 15 minutes.

In the 2nd quarter the Swans had most of the play but failed to capitalize due to the pressure applied by the Melbourne backline. Barassi switched Stephen lcke on to Rhys-Jones and Stephen Smith lifted his game on Barry Round which nulified the two damaging forwards.

After a blast from Ron Barassi at half-time the Demons played a more direct game which resulted in them outscroring the Swans. They looked a much better side the third quarter and the game was still far from over. Robert Flower always looked dangerous when the Demons drove the ball forward.

The last quarter began with the Swans 28-points up, but Melbourne kept attacking with good handball & direct kicking. It took the Swans until the 20-minute mark to seal the game with a great solo goal from Bernie Evans. Best players for Swans: Rhys-Jones, Ackerley, Taubert, Evans and Hawke. Demons: Flower, Healy, Connolly & Moore.

Goals - Swans: Rhys-Jones 5; Braddy, Evans, Hounsell 2; Frangalas, Chilcote, Morwood, Holden and Browning 1 each. Demons: Flower and Johnson 3; Cordner2; Healy, Holden, Thorne and lcke 1 each. PLAYER COMMENT · Mark Browning: "very

pleasing win; younger players again performed well; proved Wagga practice-match form was correct; younger players showed the way with their endeavour early in the game and then the older players took over in the last quarter ... Advice to youngster wanting to play league football: concentrate on skills, particularly your non-preferred side".

A certain Swans player finding himself in a Piua Parlour in the early hours of Monday morning was very embarrassed when he opened his wallet and it was empty. Using his watch as security he took his much wanted pizza. To his dismay he returned Monday night to collect his watch and found that the pizza palour did not open until 11 p.m.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT by Sydney Swans Country Development Officer Mick Daniher

On Saturday, 14th the junior football focus will be on Ungarie where the annual Under

17 Letona Cup and Under 15 McPherson Shield competitions will be played.

Junior leagues from throughout the Riverina will be represented in what should be a good day's football.

These games are used by the Riverina Junior Football League and Wagga and District Juniors to select teams to participate in the State trials.

The Teal Cup Under 17 State trials will be held at Orange on April 28 and 29 while the Under 15 trials will be held at Wagga on July 7 and 8.

This year's national Teal Cup series will be held in Sydney.

NSW Under 17 coach Greg Miller and Under 15 coach Terry McGee will be at Ungarie.

And also, for the first time there will be a trophy for the Under 13 division.

The name of the trophy is being withheld until the presentation by the Riverina Junior Football League. ---History will be made when the first Australian Foot-ball inter-league match will be played in West Wyalong on April 21 between Northern Riverina and Central West leagues.

Northern Riverina can see the long-term benefits for football by promoting the code and playing this game in a developing centre.

At Forbes last year Central West scored a surprise win against Northern Riverina.

Coach of Northern Riverina , Stan Hague is eager to win this return match as well as using it as a lead-up to the game against Picola League on May 26.

Likewise Central West will be keen to do well as they play Illawarra League on April 28 in a NSW Country Championship match. ---While on the subject of inter-league games in de-veloping areas, North West League will take on Central West at Coonabarabran on June IO.

North. West comprises teams from Wee Waa , Gunnedah, Inverell, Tamworth , Coonabarabran and the Moree Saints and Moree Swans.

I had talks recently with North West vice-president

Mr Daryl Young and Coonabarabran president Mr Peter Spinks, and they said although the league was still in an infancy stage everything is coming along nicely.

The interest at a junior level is continually on the increase due to interest generated by the VFL Match of the Day telecast and the Sydney Swans involvement throughout NSW.

Their competition starts on Saturday with a knockout at Moree. ---Closer to home the Rivcrina Football League and Hume League kick off this weekend.

The ROFL started last weekend and no doubt ROFL coach Jack Barry and selectors are on the lookout for players to represent the league against South West Gippsland in the VCFL District Leagues Championships.

There is certainly the opportunity there for young players to gain representative honours. ---

There arc five new coaches at the helms of RFL clubs this year.

Trevor Zeltener (Ardlethan), Hans Heystratcn (Ariah Park) , Tony Turner (East Wagga) , Gerald Pieper (Turvey Park) and Barry Ough (Wagga) are the new mentors.

No doubt all coaches are keen to start the season off on the right foot with a win. ---It's pleasing to hear the number of players that have registered for the Griffith Mod Rules competition.

Griffith officials are very pleased with the response. Griffith will also field two sides in each age group of

the Leeton Schoolboys competition. ---Herald Shield Sydney Swan Zone Final results: Mt.

RIVERINA DISTRICT NETBALL ASSOCIATION

The 1984 football season has rolled around and our Netball Competition is set for another successful and enjoyable year.

This season sees the following clubs fielding three teams: The Rock-Yerong Creek, Marrar , Mangoplah-Cookardinia United and Collingullie, with Temora and Barellan having only two senior sides. Our Under 14scompetition seems to be here to stay and it is wonderful to see the young girls participating in our League.

At the Annual General Meeting Christine Smith (Marrar) was voted president of the R.D.N.A. and Joy Heasiip (Temora) secretary.

Congratulations to all teams which made the 1983 finals especially the victors: Temora -A Grade and B Grade ; M.C.U. in the Under 14s.

The Best & Fairest winner for 1983 were: Marie McRae (M.C.U.) A Grade, runner-up Glenda Pike (Temora); Annie Burnett (Temora) B Grade , runner-up Paula Mazzochi (T.R.Y.C.). Well done girls.

Unfortunately for the R.D.N.A. facilities at Maher Oval are not up to standard for Netball, the finals last year proves this point emphatically. It's no mean feat to play Netball on a court that has washed away before your eyes. Therefore it has been proposed

that we re-direct league finances this season from finals umpires to the establishment of the playing area at Maher Oval. All must agree that it is most important for us to upgrade our Netball playing areas. It is hoped that we will be able to complete this project with the assistance of the R.D.F.L. and the management of Maher Oval.

On the lighter side of things, this will be a weekly column and all clubs are invited and urged to submit club news etc., to me (Jane Lloyd) which will be printed , if space permits. Let's all make the most of our column!

Club secretaries are reminded to phone yom game results through to Joy Heaslip (82 2260) every Sunday for publication.

This week we have Marrar v M.C.U. and Barellan v Temora.

Until next week "Good Netballing"!

RIVERINA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

gditorial RIVERINA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Last Saturday's opening round of games in the Two Divisions began in a lop-sided fashion with the winners, in most cases, doing it in convincing manner.

Many clubs like to say that first-round performances are often misleading with, in some cases, players pulling their boots on for the first time and in other instances players being unavailable as they complete their summer sport commitments. It's doubtful, though, that such excuses could have altered the results of many - if any - of last Saturday's games .

So ... has the trend already been set for yet another unbalanced competition, with the top half vastly superior to the bottom teams?

Todays round will go towards establishing whether that will be the case or not, with, in Division I, all of last weeks winners playing all of last weeks losers.

If all the winners are again winners today, the competition ladder will be clear-cut. But . . . don't despair players and supporters of the 'losing' clubs - there are still sixteen weeks to go!

Due to the unfortunate withdrawal of the R.A.A.F. teams from the Division Two competition, Cootamundra players and supporters have had to wait until today to make their start to the '84 season.

The Blues will be coached this year by their only R.D.F.L. representative player of last year, Peter Delaney and will travel to Boree Creek for their first time in many years.

m Firstly, an apology for the nonappearance of our notes last week, mainly due to a seemingly infectious strain of lethargy that unfortu-

BLUE & WHITE nately chose to strike during the last STRIPES quarter at Collingullie last week.

After being right in the game for three quarters, we were over-run by

a more disciplined side. I'm sure coach, Ian Geddes will be doing some homework this week on the strengths and weaknesses that were apparent. I know none of the boys were happy with the team's overall performance and are ready to bounce back this week against Temora.

The Netball girls came home smiling with two good wins, congratulations!

Although soundly beaten, our youthful Reserve Grade side applied themselves wel1 for four quarters and gained valuable experience from 'pressure' football.

Our Social Committee has planned some dalliance for the near future. Mark Kenny and David Overs are at the helm. Got some ideas? Let them know.

Speaking of Committees, Peter Fahey, selfappointed chairman, president, treasurer, secretary, man friday, boy wonder of the 'Democratic Players Trip Away' Committee was overheard mumbling something about a 'memorable week in Moombooldool', or was it Wrest Point Casino? It seems Pete needs some suggestions as to 'where to go" - unreasonable and impossible suggestions welcome also, say Pete. He loves a challenge!

Well fellas, last Saturdays M effort by our three teams could be marked down as one of the gutiest efforts in the Roos his-tory. The First Graders put up a great fight to take the four points, the Seconds put up a great fight WHITE. BLUE v too, but lack of fittness let us down in the last quarter and the makeshift U19s side gave the crowd a great display of football to win easily.

Mick (Ocker) O'Callagan won the Mug in a great team effort, with Ray (Dago) Block taking home the wine. Ray made it a double by winning the Mug in the Seconds with the wine being a team award. No U19s awards were given as it was a great team effort with Shane Johnson, Chris McClelland, Ricky Dunn, Patrick Wallace and Stephen Corby showing the way. It is good to see that old Temora spirit back in the club and with a bit more training the Roos will be right in the firing line again this year. ·

This week we take the long trip to Barellan, so let's make it a worthwhile trip and get three big wins!

Finally, an old Australian proverb dedicated to Hoges 'he who plays at fullforward does not necessarily mean he can kick straight'

CARN THE ROOS!

SOUTH WAGGA - TOLLAND DONS . something that never happened in '83

and hopefully won't happen too often · in '84.

.

The opening day started rather disastrously with only 14 available play

RED. BLACK v crs m the Under 19s Thanks to boundary umpire Darren Carey who helped take the number to 15, but ,

still we were no match for a talented MCU combination. Paul 'Ezza' Errington carried on his form of last year to win a well-deserved 'Man of the Match' award. Others to show out were John Carey, Paul Crouch and Michael Stancombe. Welcome to the new boys and today it"s hoped we have at least 18!

Thanks to six Under 19s and two 'old men', the Reserves had a twenty, which performed very creditably against last year's premiers MCU. Marty 'one-leg' J unck showed fine form near the goals and Damian Crimmins ('Man of the Match') and Mark O'Brien (until injured) were !,\reat in defence. A pleasing feature was the excellent display by each and everyone of the Under 19s who 'doubled-up' . Word is 'Jock ' might have an 8 a.m. 'warm-up' game. so they' ll 'fire' in the Under 19s.

For one half the Dons were right with the talented Goanna lineup in the main match ... but lack of topleague discipline and perhaps a bit of fitness brought about a big defeat. It was hard to pick a four-quarter performer, but there's little doubt that Tony 'Mud-eyes' Owens and Brian 'Pencil' Robinson were our best. Wayne Gardner took some strong marks and booted five majors, coach Ian McKenzie did all he could in defence, as did Paul O 'Donnell.

Today as we proudly unfurl our premiership pennants from last year, we hope that our performances in the three matches against the Collingullie-Ashmont teams can match the occasion.

Players and supporters are reminded that Membership Cards are available and to the Demon players and supporters - join us for a drink and chat in the Amber Room after the game.

M,~hf;J;,;lf;I =t•) ~ i :J 3 ;I#_ Welcome to '84, firstly may I

wish all players a succesful, happy and injury-free season.

Congratulations to our coaching panel for the year:

BLACK. RED SASH Anthony Baker 1st Grade coach; Paul Butterworth Assistant 1st Grade coach; Ed Glowry 2nd

Grade coach; Bruce Rollins U19s coach. Special welcome to Paul and Ros Butterworth,

I am sure you will enjoy your footy with us. Great to see old players Chris Beaven, Mal

Roberts and Gary 'Happy Joe Happy' Langtry back with us. Hope you are fit again soon Chris, we need you!

Last week we lost 3 grades to the strong North Wagga club. Best players: lsts - N. Turner, D. Malone, W. Greatz, M. Roberts; 2nds - A. Willis, G. Price (is he still playing!), K. Shea; U19s -Fred Furner and Stu Knight.

With more fitness and combination we will improve greatly. Our 2nd Grade side is looking for more players, anyone who would like a game will be warmly welcomed. As an added bonus you get a chance to play under former interstate full-back Ed Glowry.

Sorry to hear about ironman Bruce Rollins' sickness. He is believed to have had a mystery tropical disease 'appendicitis'. Happily he is much better now.

Today we welcome our good friends from the hills 'Mango'. A big test for us. Give it all you've got Bombers. See you after the game.

Three good wins last week,

Stephen Cole may not have had his kicking boots on but more than made up for that with a brilliant display of ball-handling, speed and agaility which won him the Tolland Hotel Towel. Peter Graham won the mug with Darren Cole getting the third vote in the Milton's Gear Award.

The Reserves, after struggling early, settled down to take the points fairly comfortably with evergreen Chris Maher winning the Towel, ably assisted by Andrew Lloyd, Alister Lawson and Rod Feutrill.

Our Under 19s coasted to a 20-goal victory and must expect much tougher opposition in future games . Peter Ryan won the Peter Matthews/ Riverina Spraying Service Towel. Byron Cole had a top game at centre half-forward, whilst Andrew Maher made an impressive debut with the senior club.

MCU is delighted to have retained the generous assistance of our major sponsor JASON NISSAN , not only do they support a great football club, but they are a great bunch to do business with. To Jason Nissan and our other sponsors thanks for your support , we're proud to be associated with you.

Today we face Marrar and won't be taking them lightly in any grade.

Don't forget the Progressive Dinner tomorrow evening (Sunday) 5.30 at the pub. We need more casseroles urgently to make the night a success.

BLACK & WHITE must go to Temora for their fighting STRIPES display.

Award winners were: Magpie of Week, David Condon who looks set

to have a great season. Courage Award to Paul 'Gardens' Park who didn't put a foot wrong all day.

The 2nds had a good win after looking like being short but for the help of the 'older brigade'. Award winners were: Magpie of the Week , Danny Cocking who played his last game and we wish him all the best with his new club. Courage Award went to coach Barry who led by example.

The Ul9s had a close struggle but unfortunately came out second best. With plenty of numbers they can only improve throughout the year. Magpie of Week, Graham Thompson and Riverina Spraying Service Towel to Russell Dacey. This is a new sponsor and we thank them very much for their kind gesture.

The Ul4s had their first match at Cootamundra and were victorious. Dale Lewington won the towel donated Caltex. There is a whisper that this comp may have to fold but we sincerely hope that sanity prevails and the kids are able to play footy for the sake of a few sacrifies. Todays juniors are tomorrows seniors.

This week it's last years premiers North Wagga. It's dcfinetly going to be a difficult task but one which is surely not beyond us. With the right attitude and correct application we can have three good wins.

Don't forget to enjoy our hospitality during and after the game in the Clubrooms.

RED & WHITE STRIPES

Well last weekend we travelled to_ Whitton for our first match, and returned without any competition points in both grades.

The Seconds were defeated 17.12.144 to 3.0.18. At least we kicked straight. The pewter went to Neil Moore, who was playing

in his first game. Pat Manly won the Steer Award and Chuck Rodgers the Pizza.

The Firsts went down 17.18.170 to 8.10.58. It was a hard fought game, and as we play to~ether more we will show everyone that the Pigs will be a force to be reckoned with.

It was good to see all our first year players fitting into the team, and actually taking most of the awards. This week we still have a few more players to come in, so maybe we will be able to field two full teams.

The trip home saw the first performance of the Bushpig Tabernacle Choir. The singing was carried on when we finally returned to the Steer. To all those who would like to contribute to the 'Buet Book of Bushpig Bus Ballads' we will be compiling during the week so its ready for the trip to Coota.

To all at Junee, whatever the result, come down and join us for a few beer and a meal at the Red Steer afterwards.
