A VISIT TO COCKATOO ISLAND with David Jehan

Saturday 18 April 2020Come along for an interesting 2 hours learning of the Industrial heritage of Cockatoo Island

with David Jehan. From its earliest years as a convict penal establishment to is current UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Ship building commenced on Cockatoo Island in 1870 and continued until 1993. Stewardship of the Island was passed to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust in 2001 and is now a harbour tourist attraction.Meet at Circular Quay at 10.15am to take the 10.37am Sydney Ferries service to Cockatoo

Island. Use your Opal Card for transport to and from the Island.Bring a picnic lunch or purchase your requirements at the cafe on the Island. You can leave at

5 to 9 June 2020Come and join the ARHS NSW Division and The Rail Motor Society for a new adventure to a former railway

destination and a visit to the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo for our annual Queens Birthday Weekend Tour.Friday 5th June. Travel from Sydney on the 6.15am Intercity Train service to Broadmeadow to join our

heritage 621/721 Rail Cars.Departing Broadmeadow at 9.00am we will serve a welcome Devonshire Morning Tea as we pass through

Maitland and Singleton, passing the great moonscape of open cut coal mines to Muswellbrook, stopping there for a leg stretch. Continue north through Scone and Murrurundi climbing the 1 in 40 grades and through the Ardglen Tunnel, descending to Willow Tree and on to Quirindi before stopping for lunch on the station at Werris Creek. Take the opportunity to visit the Station Museum and Railway Memorial before rejoining our train and proceeding to Gap junction to travel on the cross country line to Binnaway. On arrival, transfer to our coach to follow the 51 km closed section of the Gwabegar Line to Coonabarabran where we will check in to the Matthew Flinders Motor Inn for a 3 night stay. Drinks in the bar before Dinner in the Dining Room.Saturday 6th June. After a hearty country breakfast we will be joining our coach to travel to the Siding Spring

Observatory. Meet our Tour Guide and visit the Exploratory Centre, also visiting Trig Point and Australia’s largest optical telescope. Morning Tea in the Exploratory Cafe. Depart for the Warrumbungle National Park Visitors Centre to meet the local Rangers. Continue to the Canyon Picnic Area for a packed lunch. On our return journey visit the Whitegum Lookout and view the spectacular Warrumbungle Mountains and the iconic Breadknife. Pay a visit to the amazing Crystal Kingdom. Return to town for a Chinese Banquet Dinner before relocating to the Warrumbungle Observatory to view the Night Sky with a noted astronomer. (Weather permitting). Return to the Motel.Sunday 7th June. Join our coach again after breakfast spending a day on a journey following the 95 km

closed railway line to Gwabegar. We will check out the station locations along the line at Yearinan, Bugaldie, Wittenbra, Baradine, then Kenebri and Merebene. Gwabegar, created in the 1920’s, is located nearby the Pilliga Scrub where timber cutters exploited large stands of the termite resistant white cypress pine.Return to Baradine for a Country Pub Sunday Roast lunch and visit the Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre. Return

to the Coonabarabran Visitor Centre to view the Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition and Aboriginal Artefacts and Art Display. Take a stroll around the town before for our third night dinner at the Motel.Monday 8th June. After breakfast, a return transfer in our coach to Binnaway to re-join our train for a morning

run to Dubbo. We will be met at the station to be transferred to the Western Plains Zoo for lunch and an afternoon amongst the amazing variety of wild animals. Our Coach will have an on board guide as we travel around the zoo to view the natural locations created to see the amazing variety of animals.Check in to the Dubbo Comfort Inn International for our last night stay. Enjoy a Happy Hour with drinks in the

Bar before our dinner in the Dining Room.

Tuesday 9th June. Following breakfast we return to Dubbo Station to join our train for our homeward bound journey. Following the main western line through Wellington to Orange for a leg stretch and on to Bathurst for lunch at the Victoria Hotel. Continue eastward to Lithgow and a run down the Blue Mountains to terminate at Sydney Central Station. The train will then return to Broadmeadow and Paterson.You may wish to travel to Paterson or Maitland to join our train before our Friday departure. Accommodation

is available in Paterson and Rutherford (close to Telarah Station) for the preceding Thursday night at your own arrangements and cost.The Tour cost is all inclusive of Rail travel in 621/721. Coach travel and transfers, Dinner Bed and Breakfast

Saturday 11 July 2020Join the 7.21am Intercity Train from Central to Broadmeadow due at 9.47am to join the Coach

departing at 10.00am to transfer to the Newcastle University’s Auchmuty Library for a very special presentation of recent railway image acquisitions and historic movie footage from the University’s archives, arranged by Greg Anderson. Ed tonks will again be giving a commentary on the showing. Refreshments will be served on arrival. Transfer then to the Newcastle Harbourside for Lunch at leisure at 12.30pm from the variety of food outlets along the wharf precinct. Board the recently restored replica of the ‘William IV’ Paddle Wheeler for a cruise around Newcastle Harbour noting the various shipping movements and activities around the harbour foreshore. Rejoin our coach at 4.00pm to travel to the Newcastle Beach Terminus of the Newcastle Tram for the return trip to the Newcastle Interchange to connect with the Intercity service to Sydney at 4.53pm, due to arrive at Central at 7.33pm.Tour cost includes coach transfers, your William IV cruise and a donation to the Special

A LOOK AT THE MINES AND LINES OF NEWCASTLE

and its INNER SUBURBS with Ed Tonks

8 & 9 August 2020Enjoy a weekend exploring the Mining sites and associated Railway workings of Newcastle and its Inner suburbs with our noted

historian, Ed Tonks, OAM. Areas to be explored start with the site of South Waratah Colliery on the Raspberry Gully Line. Travel to suburban Lambton, New Lambton, Jesmond and Wallsend to view sites and any relics remaining of collieries and railways servicing these mines. Lunch at a local Hotel.

After lunch visit more railway and colliery sites associated with the Junction and Merewether areas. Travel to Nobby’s and learn of what was there and along the Newcastle foreshore.

On Sunday we will travel via Carrington, Port Waratah and Morandoo to Stockton. View Newcastle’s changing CBD from across the River. Investigate the Stockton Colliery disaster of 1896. Visit the site of Walsh Island Dock Yard, birthplace of some of Sydney’s first electric trains and view Kooragang Island’s Coal Loaders. Lunch at the Stag and Hunter Hotel located at the Mayfield Tram Terminus.

After lunch return to Newcastle via Hamilton and visit some AA Co. sites. See how the old Honeysuckle Railway Workshop sites have been utilised and visit the Newcastle Regional Museum.

Catch the 7.21 am Intercity Service from Sydney due to arrive at Broadmeadow at 9.47 am to join our tour bus to take us to our various destinations. Pack your walking shoes, as there will be some areas only accessible by walking.

The Weekend includes overnight accommodation at the Tudor Motor Inn, Hamilton, Group Dinner Saturday night, full breakfast Sunday morning. Lunches on both days will be at your own expense.

Goulburn Roundhouse Museum via the Main South Line with a Return trip via Moss Vale, Robertson,

Unanderra and Wollongong 13 September 2020

Come and join with The Rail Motor Society to experience a run to Goulburn in the 621/721 Heritage Rail Cars.

Travelling from Sydney Central departing at about 8.00am, we will travel along the old Main South Line to Strathfield, Lidcombe, Liverpool to Glenfield and Campbelltown and into the rolling green foothills of the Southern Highlands. Morning Tea will be served as we pass through Picton, and on to Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale.

You may wish join the train at Strathfield, Liverpool, Glenfield or Campbelltown.Upon arrival into Goulburn, we will proceed through the station and to the Goulburn Roundhouse Museum where

we will be able to leave the train for time to inspect the many exhibits and be hosted to a BBQ lunch provided by the Roundhouse Museum volunteers.

The return journey will return us to Moss Vale where we branch off along the Cross Country Line via Robertson and down the escarpment to Unanderra. From here we join the Main South Coast Line travelling north along the Illawarra Line to Wollongong and north through Thirroul, keeping a watchful eye on the scenic coastal splendour to Stanwell Park and Waterfall. Pass through the suburbs to set downs at Sutherland and Hurstville with an expected arrival at Central at 6.30pm.

The train will then return to Broadmeadow and Paterson for those that joined en route on the forward journey.The Tour cost includes Rail travel in 621/721, Morning and Afternoon Teas whilst travelling, Museum entry and BBQ

A TOUR in the CPH RAIL MOTORS to RYLSTONESaturday 10 October 2020

An opportunity has provided the ARHS NSW Division and The Rail Motor Society to organise a special rail tour in the CPH Rail Motors to Rylstone. The railway to Rylstone, a town in the Central Tablelands of NSW, some 256 Km from Sydney opened 0n 9th June 1884 and closed with the line on 2nd March 1992. The Line reopened on the 2nd September 2000 and closed again 30th June 2007. In 2018 the 7 Km section from Kandos was refurbished to enable heritage trains to visit the Kandos – Rylstone Heritage precinct.

Our tour has been given permission to travel along the re-opened extension from Kandos to Rylstone Station on the currently truncated Mudgee line by the Country Rail operator John Holland.

On Saturday 10th October 2020 our train will consist of the heritage CPH Rail Motors from The Rail Motor Society at Paterson. A departure from Sydney Central is expected around 7.40am. Enjoy a Devonshire Morning Tea served at your seat while you admire the scenery as the train crosses the Great Dividing Range through the Blue Mountains.

The train will pick up and set down at Strathfield, Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith. At Wallerawang we take the branch line through Piper’s Flat, Portland, Cullen Bullen, Ben Bullen and onwards through

the magnificent Capertee Valley. Continue, passing Clandulla, Charbon and Kandos to our destination at Rylstone for lunch. There is the option to bring a picnic lunch or enjoy a lunch at the various cafes or hotels in the town. After lunch, take a walk along Rylstone’s Main Street taking in the historic buildings and life of what is now a quiet country town before returning to the Station.

A bus will be provided to transfer passengers from Rylstone station to the town centre and return. Re-join the train for a 3.00pm departure that is due to return to Sydney Central by 8.30pm. Afternoon tea will be served as we return through the afternoon glow so spectacular in the Capertee Valley. The train will then return to Broadmeadow and Paterson.

The Rail Motors will be travelling to Sydney on the Friday to be in place at Central for the Saturday morning departure.Travellers are welcome to join the train for this trip from Paterson, however you will need to make your own

TUESDAY TO SATURDAY 17 / 21st NOVEMBER 2020

Here is your chance to travel on some on lines not now serviced by regular passenger trains to the far West of New South Wales travelling over 5 days on your own private train in RAIL MOTOR HPC 402.

Day 1. An early departure for those travelling from Sydney to Broadmeadow via the Newcastle Intercity Service. Use your Opal card for your trip departing at 7.15am and arriving at Broadmeadow at 9.55am. Join 402 departing at 10.00am to commence our travel through to Maitland from where we head up the Main North Line to Singleton and Muswellbrook. A packet Lunch on board as we take the cross country line through Ulan to Gulgong for our first night stay.

Day 2. Enjoy a hearty breakfast before we depart on a full day 485km trip from Gulgong. Our first section is to Merrygoen to reverse and continue to Dubbo for Lunch. Proceed westward across the Macquarie River for the run through to Narromine, then north west to Trangie, Nevertire, Nyngan and Cobar. On arrival we transfer to our Motel for a 2 night stay.

Day 3. Depart Cobar for the short run on the Mine Branch. Return to Cobar for a Coach Tour of the district including a visit to the local Museum with time for lunch in town. We return to our Motel for our second night stay.

Day 4. Departing Cobar we retrace our path to Narromine for lunch. We reverse to continue our journey with a run over the recently reconstructed and up graded 110km section of line that is to become a part of the new Inland Freight Line to Goobang Junction. Proceed into Parkes station where we transfer to our Motel for our last night stay.

Day 5. After breakfast, return to Parkes Station to join our train for the pleasant run over the undulating grades to Molong before tackling the Borenore Bank into Orange via the West Fork for a leg stretch on the station. Retrace our path to the Junction again via the West Fork to continue our journey with the ‘long end’ leading through Blayney to Bathurst for a County Pub lunch at the Victoria Hotel. Continue our homeward journey eastward through to Wallerawang, Lithgow and a run down the Blue Mountains to Penrith and into the suburban west to Homebush taking the north arm of the triangle to North Strathfield to say farewell to our Sydney passengers. HPC 402 will then continue its return journey to Broadmeadow and Paterson.

Your fare includes Rail Travel from Paterson or Broadmeadow, morning and afternoon teas whist travelling, lunches, Twin Share Dinner Bed and Breakfast accommodation for four nights, transfers to the Motels where required and entry into visited venues.Use your Opal Card for travel from Sydney to Broadmeadow.
