JULY 2012
FROM THE EDITOR
Whatever way you considered it, the final weekend of the 2012
French Open was all about the history. Just as Maria Sharapova
emphatically completed her Grand Slam collection with a
straight sets win in the women’s final, the record-keepers were preparing to
make more new entries, the men’s final presenting a chance for Rafael Nadal
to claim an unprecedented seventh title or Novak Djokovic to achieve the
rare feat of holding all four major titles at once.
It was Nadal, of course, who seized that history and in bettering the record
he previously held with Bjorn Borg, the Spaniard seems a man rejuvenated.
Where the 25-year-old Borg would never win another Grand Slam – he was
a finalist at his next major event at Wimbledon but retired form tennis soon
afterwards – the 26-year-old Nadal has now defeated Djokovic in their past
three finals and seems poised to further re-assert his authority.
While you could argue it will be tough for the clay court king to replicate
the same dominance on other surfaces, the mental boost from finally
outclassing Djokovic is immense. Having earlier endured the frustration of
six consecutive finals losses to the world No. 1 – three of them Grand Slams –
Nadal can tackle future meetings knowing that his nemesis isn’t completely
unbeatable after all.
For Sharapova, the 2012 French Open victory wasn’t simply a renewal,
but a completely new start. While victories in every other major suggested
this title was an obvious completion, it was far from straightforward for
the recrowned No. 1. Since her last major victory at Australian Open 2008,
Sharapova overcame a serious shoulder injury and grappled with the
possibility her career could end.
Passions obviously run deep for both Sharapova and Nadal, who’ll each be
determined to build on their history at Wimbledon and the Olympics. Their
respective records may be crammed already but as the 2012 French Open
showed, champions of such calibre always have room for more big titles.

A MILESTONE MAJOREvery Grand Slam can provide a career turning point, but the 2012 French Open proved
more than that, as Rafael Nadal made history in lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires
trophy for a record seventh time and Maria Sharapova completed her Grand Slam
collection on the rich red clay. In re-establishing authority these popular champions
set stunning new benchmarks … and as the standard grows, so too does the awe and
appreciation of an unprecedented era in the game.
