Join us for a 5 day walking exploration of the wildlife and landscapes of remarkable Kangaroo Island, which has been likened to a giant zoo without enclosures! Our trip will take in all the best hikes and sights of this wildlife haven, which is also Australia’s 3rd largest Island. Wildlife abounds on Kangaroo Island; the ocean teems with fish, sea lions and little penguin colonies. Stand on the shore and watch migrating southern right whales and their calves whilst inland Kangaroos, wallabies, Koalas, echidnas and rare bird life thrives.

Each day you will travel out from our centrally located base and explore different walks throughout the Island. In the evening you’ll enjoy meals of excellent local produce and wine, and we also spend time in the renowned McLarenvale Wine district on our return to the mainland.

Our guided trip with our senior walking leader David Mitchell, will start from Adelaide and take you on an exciting journey that will show you the best of the Island and it’s walks and wildlife. We transfer you out each day from our centrally located accommodation near Seal Bay and explore different aspects and walks on this remarkable island. You need only bring a daypack for the hikes and you’ll be well looked after with rest stops, refreshments and meals of excellent local produce in the evenings. After our Kangaroo island adventure finishes we‘ll stop in on the return at the McLarenvale wine district and overnight in Noarlunga, a wonderful way to finish the trip.

Discover a fascinating Island that is a world unto itself. Maria Island has become a modern day wildlife sanctuary for endangered species such as the Tasmanian Devil but it also has a historic past, with many buildings and ruins from it’s convict days. We take a private charter boat to the island where we’ll stay in the old convict Penitentiary and you’ll walk amongst pure and untainted nature, whilst you’re indulged with wonderful meals of Tasmanian food and wine.

The Painted Cliffs near Darlington are beautifully coloured and patterned sandstone formations, carved by the sea and wind, bordered by rock pools teeming with marine life.

History Maria Island has many layers of fascinating history to explore which are evident today in it’s historic buildings and ruins. Aboriginal people lived here for thousands of years before European settlement which started with a whalers and sealers station exploiting the rich marine life. Then followed a significant Penal settlement at Darlington ( pictured here) in 1825 - 1832 which was abandoned then taken up again in 1842. These significant buildings remain today along with others from the 1880s when Diego Bernacchi built a hotel, vineyards and other ventures as the ‘Maria Island Company’. The 1920’s saw the National Portland Cement Company to set up a works on the island for a decade before being eventually declared a National Park in 1971.

This is a unique RAW travel adventure as we charter our own private plane to take us walking on the remote islands of Bass Strait. First stop is King Island which is justly famous for it’s excellent cheeses, beef and crayfish so we’ll follow the aptly named grazing trail and call into some of these local producers to enjoy what’s on offer. What also made King Island infamous at one time was it’s shipping disasters and the Maritime trail explores the shipwrecks and lighthouses dotted around the Island. The local people of these islands are also part of the attraction; the rugged simplicity of life here attracts hardy and open people.

We then fly onto spectacular Finders Island with it’s mountains rising from the sea and abundant wildlife. The Strzelcki peak and Darling ranges offers excellent but more vigorous walking and wonderful views. Like it’s neighbor King Island , Flinders also has it’s share of history and shipwrecks to explore. The real attraction of these islands is their remoteness and slow and easy pace. As with all our walks the trip here will be fully supported so you just carry a daypack.
