OF OUR SPORT National Championships Geelong Gun Club 1969 S m Marshall of Hobart, Tasmania, wins Ov& High Gun with a Pine scorn of 292-300.

The program commenced with the Cham'pion of Champions Cup. This attracted a field of 224 shooters, some five shooters shot a possible 50-50. An interesting shoot-off saw well-known Paul Marshall of Hobart, Tasmania, take out the coveted award with a soore of 92-92,

The grounds of the S.A. Gun Club were a credit to President. Bob Mules, and his untiring committee.

It was noted that Bob and a few others stayed out at the Club on Wednesday night after the National Shoot, and had things fairly well cleaned up by midday the next day. During the cleaning up operation a rather funny thing occurred. Bob picked up about 500 disposable paper oups and out them in a 44-asUon drum, which had been burnina WZBT, but had goneout. ~ o b poured some petrol in th; drum andlit it from a oraokin the bottom, when the whole thing started to gmwl and went off with a whcomf, shooting the 600 oups into the air over a wider area than from where they had been picked up. Poor old Bob did not know whether to laugh or ory, and whilst sitting on a stool lookingat themess, it was said, "Hell Bob, that was a good pattern". This comment helped him see the funny side.

AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM COMPETES IN THREE WORLD CUPS

Most nations intending to send teams to the Olympic Games in Seoul this year sent their Olympic Teams to the European World Cups. The Australian Olympic Federation funded the Australian Shooting Team and Coach, to attend these events as the competition was equal to Olympic and World Championship standards.

It was apparent with the Clay Target shooters that they imoroved their ~erformances as they went along, b-ming stronger and stronger with each event. The first World Cup was held in Suhl in East Germany, a town steeped in the traditions of shooting sports. The whole community is involved in some way in the historic craPts of gun manufacture.

Pistol and Rifle events were contested as well as Clay Target. Australia's best results were: John Maxwell - Olympic Trap, shot 194, equal 5th score to be placed 10th on count back. The event was won by Pera of Italy with 197; Alan Smith - Free Rifle, Men's Prone. 596, placed 10th. Lvov of Russia won with 598; Phillip Adam8 - Free Pistol. 561, 10th place. Papanitz of Hungary won with f K ' l --, .

The shooting range at Suhl is magnificent. It has excellent facilities. As Suhl was firat cab off the rank, and most shooters had had little practice, John. Alan and Phillip must be congratulated on their world class perfoimances.

The clay shooters and myself went on to Yugoslavia while the others went to Munich. The Grand Prix of Europe was held in Osijek in the north of Yugoslavia, close to the Hungarian border. It is a small town of great antiquity, set in a rural area. The Yugoslav pe-aple were extr6meiy friendly and hospitable

John Maxwell - 5th overall, with 214: Ruesell Mark - 8th overall, with 190. The event was won by Cioni of Italy with 218.

The Australian Trap Team were placed 5th from a field of 105 competitors.

The Skcet shooters. Ian Hnle and Michael Inyanri, were unPonunatelv counted out of the cur off even though they - shot 144, se;eral went into the finals with 144.

Double Trap. The team did extremely well in the Double Trap event, held for the fist time. Do- Dk. 3rd; Australian Team. 2nd.

This was a tremendous effort as cur team has not had the opportunity to practise, whereas some of the teams had been training for twelve months. This result and my observations conPirm my belief that the Australian Down the Line shooters will do extremely well in double trap, apd as it is to be a new Olympic discipline, we have a very briaht future in Double Trap. It is exciting to watch and ex2ting to be in.

-

The sequence of three World Cups held over a period of three weeks is a great idea for Australians, it enables them to participate in more than one World Event in a short

space of time. I hope that this sequence will be repeated in the future.

Jus t for your information, the service provided for the European shooters at these events is really something. Each gun mandacturer brings along their portable workshops. They do alterations or repairs on the ground. Because shooting is such a recognized and respected sport in Europe, and because of the numbers of people involved, the gun manutacturers and cartridge companies go out of their way to woo the shooters.

It was a very succeasful tour for the Olympic Clay Target team: a team 2nd. individual 3rd. 5th, 8thand two 10th. No one can dispute that our trap shooters are world class, and the results augur well for the Olympics.

Winchester Australia i s to be congratulated and thanked for making cartridges available for the Australian team members. They were much appreciated by those who

Association has made a n excellent application, and, if granted, there will be a separate competition for women shooters. Women's team events, a s well as women's individual events will be held, so all Olympic Trap (trench) &d Olympic Skeet shooters, atart practising. Our women shooters have had to compete against the men for places in overseas teams. This is an opportunity for Australia to show rhe world just how gwd our women shooters arc.

Canberra International Gun Club this year hosted the New South Wales I.S.U. Sub-committee's annual Fund Raising Carnival over the June long weekend.

The carnival, which is the I.S.U. The events - The Eastern States Olympic Trap Championship, The Eas tern Sta tes Ball Trap Championship and The Eastern States Double Trap Championship.

Saturday saw the conducting of the Olympic Trap event which was won (but not so easily) by Australia's best ever performed Olympic Trap shooter. Jim Ellis. Michael Diamond (fresh fmm aeain establishine himself as the best standard disci~line Gp shooter at thewag@ Trap Nationals) won AA hokors, while B Grade went to Rod Prior, also of Tamworth, and C Grade to local shooter Jim Reid.

The second event of the three day program was the Eastern States Ball Trap Championship, and this saw Michael Diamond record a gwd victory on 95i100. Jim Ellis was next in the field and took AA Grade, with sub- committee chairman, David Menck taking A Grade, George Kawlis the B Grade winner and Jim Reid again taking the C Grade sash.

Eastern States Ball Trap Championship: Overall - Michael Diamond 951100; AA Grade -Jim Ellis 921100; A Grade - David Menck 901100; B Grade - George Kazolis 831100; C Grade - Jim Reid 741100.

The final day of the carnival and the numbers of competitors improved for the event that all had been waiting for, the first ever Double Trap event, to be held in Australia. Many of those who had been on hand after the Ball Trap event on Sunday had already had a taste of things t6 come, as a few practice rounds of 10 pairs of 'doubles' had been thrown at the conclusion of the second event.

e Eastem States Ball Trap Championship victors - Jim Ellis (AA Grade), David Menck (A Grade), Michael Diamond (Overall), George Kazoiis (9 Grade) and Jim Reid (C Grade).

Page 10

Surprisingly, this did not deter the real I.S.U. enthusiasts. Double Trap is certainly not an event for the faint hearted, it offers a real challenge.

After the first squad of the Eastern States Double Trap Championship, Col Burt (who incidentally can go down in history as shooting the first 'clean' pair of Double Trap targets - and David Menck who missed the first ever pair) was in the lead with 28/50. Other scores in the squad were mixed, down to around 11 and 12150.

Best scores of the first round included 33150 from Michael Diamond, Jim Ellis' 31/50, Steve Balough on 28/50 and a few others on 25150.

Overall honors for the event finally went to the ever consistent Michael Diamond, with Jim Ellis taking AA Grade. David Coleman getting A Grade and Steve Balough B Grade.

Eastern States Double Trap Championship: Overall - Michael Diamond 33 + 33 661100; AA Grade - Jim Ellis - 31 + 22 53/100; A Grade-Davie Coleman 25 + 29 541100; B Grade - Steve Balough 28 + 21 491100.

Unfortunately, due to a few minor trap problems, the final round of the Double Trap could not he conducted and the event had to be decided over two rounds. Perhaps this was enough!

e Another 'first' for Michael Diamond, Overall winner of Australia's first-ever Double Trap Championship - receiving his trophies from I.S. U. Sub-Commlliee Chalnnan David Menck.

Again, the weekend proved successful for the sub- committee, and raised funds to give the Olympic Discipline shooters and clubs of the state the assistance they need. Without the genemus assistance given to the I.S.U. shooters of New South Wales by the sponsors of the weekend, the carnival could not have been a success.

The I.S.U. discipline shooters of New South Wales would sincerely like to acknowledge the valued assistance given by the following sponsors and urge you to give these aponsore your support in return when contemplating purchases: e Olimpyc Targets - Scorpio Cartridges e Keith R. Herron Pty Ltd 0 Winchester o Lightning Shot e A.C.T. Ammunition 0 C.L.A.S.S. (Col Burt) e Fuller Firearms 0 Mulwala Explosives Factory.

The support and assist&ce given by bur sponsors has once again assured the1.S.U. shooters of New South Wales of the continued assistance of the sub-committee. The sub- committee would also like to make special mention of the help and support given to it by the committee and members of the Canberra International Gun Club. The use of the club's facilities and man power was much appreciated.

BOB FOX Although a keen hunter for most of his Me. Bob did not

take up clay shooting until 1978 when he and his wife. Mary, joined the Jabiru Gun Club. That was not out of any particular interest in clay shooting, but rather as a convenient escape from a particular workinglliving situation at least once a fortnight.

Nevertheless they were soon well and truly hwked and in late 1979 transferred to the Darwin Gun Club. Bob was elected to the committee in 1981 where he has served ever since in various positions becoming President in 1986.

In 1987 he was elected Vice-President of the N.T.C.T.A. and this year elected as President.

He is a new member of the Executive replacing Ken Selwood who resigned due to business pressures. Bob is a member of the Computer Sub-Committee.

He has wide interests in shwting being Vice-Chairman of the N.T. Sporting Shooters Council, Committee member of the Hunters Union of the N.T. and S.S.A.A. member. Westfield Shoppingtown, Miranda join with Olimpyc Targets. Horsley Park Gun Shop, Shelleys Soft Drinks, Winchester and Fuller Firearms to make up our full sponsorship list for the Trap Carnival.

All Club delegates and any interested shooters are reminded that the Annual General Meeting wijl be held at the Club at 5.30pm on the Saturday - this will allow shooters to attend the meeting - straight after the shooting has finished.

For those seeking accommodation, we would suggest - - that you try the following:

Cronulla Beach Resort - 523 8999; Cronulla Motor Inn - 523 6800; Metro Motor Inn - 525 7577; Sapphire Motor Inn - 522 0444: Wooden Shoe Motel - 520 8166: Hunts Motel - 601 5088.

The SydneylMarconi facilities are coming along well and we are all looking fonvard to a great shoot over the October long weekend. ON THE COACHING FRONT:

At the last State Executive meeting, the State Coaching Director presented a proposal of conducting a Junior Coaohing CamplSeminar in September, 1939. The seminar would be conducted over three or four days and would be at the Institute of Sport in Canberra. All disciplines would be catered for. The State Association have given their full support and plans have now been put into action. The dates have been set for the soh001 holidays and the camp will be open to any junior shooter who may wish to attend. For the camp to go ahead, participation is essential, so clubs are urged to encourage their juniors to attend. As time draws near, the actual dates, costs, eto. will be advised. Please support this coaching seminar. REFEREE EXAMXNERS REQUEST:

Now that almost all our referee examiners have been re- examined and the new appointees have also been examined, all those referees who have come due for re- examination and have not been examined will be contacted and arrangements made for same.

AU clubs in the State have been asked to supply the names of their members who they feel are suitable to become referees - and these people will be examined as Mlon as possible.

If you, the shooter, feel that you would We to be a referee - first approach your club secretary, who will, in turn. make the recommendation to the nearest referee examiner.

We need more referees - and this important matter is being addressed by your State Association- with the view of having at least one registered referee for each discipline conducted by a club - by the end of 1989. FROM THE CEN--ZONE:

Zone President, Peter Mould, reports that their Zone Trap Carnival and Team eliminations were held at the Grenfell club on the 30th/31st July. Grenfell is only a very small Club - with the total sum of 12 members - yet they accepted the Zone Carnival - and from all accounts did

Page 12

themselves proud. The facilities were upgraded considerably and the small working committee had everything ship shape - even the weather was kind. On Saturday, 57 shwters took part and 53 attended on Sunday - the scores, well these were unusually low - however. a meat carnival was ntaped. - ~~~~

The overall high gun was won by John Blazley with 1901205, Marilyn Dwight won the Ladies with 1511205, and the Junior high gun was taken out by a young fellow from Parkes, who has only been shooting for a short time - Clint Hawke, with 1651205. This young fellow looks to be a great shot and should record plenty more wins in the future.

The Central Zone Team for the State Carnival is as follows: T. Murray, J. Rogers, R. Piotrowski. J. Blazley, P. Barn. R. Taylor. J. Rue, N. Dwight, J.W. Smith. M. Matilka, S. Berbagallo and Darren Fairall. The reserves are: L. Arnold, P. Wamsley, F. Johns and P. Hayman. The Ladies Team is: M. Dwight, G. Toshack and L. Louie and the Junior Team comprises: Clint Hawke, Glen Campbell and D. Cornran.

The Central Zone also have a new Zone Delegate, Les Aberley, who replaces Steve Foster. Lea is a keen skeet shooter and will add strong skeet support to the State Assooiation ranks. Welcome Les. FROM THE NORTHERN ZONE:

The annual "COOL 100" was held at Guyra on the 31st July, and it seems that someone forgot to tell the weather man that it was to be a cool day. Very pleasant conditions greeted the 50+ shooters. Overall winner this year was Roger Vidal with the only perfect 1001100 - quite a list of 991100s went into the shoot off with Terry Rumbel finishing ahead of Ray Hammond.

For those skeet shooters who are kicking themselves for not attending the annual skeet shoot at Coffs Harbour this year, here icearly warning - Coffs Harbour have moved their skeet shoot back to the 14tW15th JANUARY, which is the week following their annual trap shoot. This date is of course in the peak holiday season on the north coast - so before you read any further, go and phone for accommodation reservations - so that you will not miss a great skeet shoot.

Another reminder about the big trap shoot extravaganza being held at the Tamworth Club on the 3rd and 4th September - $7,000 in trophies and sashes.

An event a little fur ther ahead - however accommodation will need to be booked as early as possible - the UPPER HUNTER GRAND SLAM on the 26th and 27th November - $25.000 in trophies has been secured. The event will be shot at the Cessnock Club over four (4) layouts using full fluro targets and phono pulls. Further information from organising secretary, Ron Wakem on (065) 45 1788. FROM THE RULES FRONT Rules relat'iag to handicapping and re-handicapping

It is obvious fmm problems arising at clubs and questions constantly being asked of those who know a bit more about the rules, that there are still a great deal of shooters and administrators who do not fully understand the rules regarding handicapping and handicap shooting.

Generally, the rules have changed little for quite some years now, and to put the whole situation in a fewer words as possible: - any competitor winning first place in a handicap event

will be handicapped 1 metre, regardless of whether he has shot a possible or not.

- any shooter winning a section of a group handicap event, will be handicapped 1 metre, providing he has shot a possible.

- any shooter winning a double barrel, single barrel or point score event from behind his handicap mark, will be handicapped to the mark, providing he has shot a ~ossible. . -~~ ~ ~ - nny shwter who shoots 50 straighc from behind tlrs handicap mark rVLU receive 1 metre handlcap (pr~viding it has not already been awarded for that event).

recently also. Don was Secretary-Treasurer for 15 years and Club

Handicapper for 30 years. He represented the club on the Board of Management of the Colac Racecourse and Recreation Reserve for 37 years and for 43 years he was the Club's Publicity Officer.

He was an accredited referee and referee examiner for 30 years, plus club coach. Don was a member of the National Executive for three years just prior to the Melbourne Olympics. In 1958 he was a member of the successful Australian Team competing for the Macintosh Cup.

He was the initiator for the long service concession for shooters over 65 years or 60 years with 30 years' continuous service, something that not many shooters would realise.

A very impressive record by any standard, the sport of i clay target shooting can ill-afford to losd such dedicated men as Don Corstorphan . . . a true sportsman.

To his wife Myra and daughters June and Lynette the Colac Gun Club would like to express our deepest sympathy.

I have to be quita truthful and say that I don't know some of the lads: B. Johnson. W. Lymn, M. Creighton, D. Murphy. W. Ranney, B. Pallant, N. Rundle, M. Hudleston. A. Martini. TAKE NOTE:

After many meetings and working bees an opening shoot waa held on the 28th October. 1958, with a nomination list of 65 shooters. A list of their names are as follows, which should be of interest to some of our older shooters today:

By P. Caddy MOUNT GAMBIER - MARYBOROUGH

It was this time off to Marybomugh for nine Mt Gambier shooters and some of their wives for another Team's Challenge competition. An excellent weekend by all accounts with Mt Gambier recording their biggest win ever. Those making the team were P. Green 40140, C. Wright 39/40. B. Spring 38/40. R. Simson 37/40 = 1541160, thus defeating Maryborough No. 1 team (see Marybomugh, I told you to watch out next time), their score being 1481160.

Mt Gambier's total club score waa 3281360 which was 25 p in t s ahead of the top Maryborough club score.

Mt Gambier twk home 13 trophies in all with P. Green winning the HIG as well as taking home, for the second time, the Jackpot prize - a nice purse of money.

After dinner, Jim Shepherd's home was invaded by all for a game of 8-ball with Marybomugh being the victors. (See, they can't shoot but they can play 8-ball!!)

On Sunday, Mt Gambier shooters did a bit of a U-turn and called in at St Arnaud for some more good scores. B. Spring and R. Simson shared the winnings in the PIS and B. Spring continued his excellent form to win the DIB defeating B. Rafferty from Maryborough and C. Wright fmm Mt Gambier. P. Green was the SIB winner and the only shooter to r e d 25/25. B. Spring came out on top over the day gainjng the HIG title.
