February 14 • Arrival Day - Hilo or KonaArrive at Kona or Hilo Airport on the BigIsland of Hawaii. February 16 • Akaka Falls, Waipio ValleyAfter breakfast, tour Akaka Falls State Park,14 miles away along the northeasternHamakua Coast. Visit two gorgeouswaterfalls on one short hike. The pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take you through a lushrainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboogroves and draping ferns.

Following the paved footpath is a 100-footKahuna Falls. Continue to follow the looparound the bend, you'll discover toweringAkaka Falls which plummets 442-feet into astream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is

perhaps Hawaii Island's most famouswaterfall. Easily accessible, this hike takes lessthan an hour.

Drive to Waipio Valley (45-minute ride), adramatic landscape one mile across and overfive-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs upto 2000-feet high. This is the childhood homeof King Kamehameha I, and an importantcenter for political and religious life inHawaii. Waipio Valley was once the home ofthousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, thereare less than 100 residents living amongst thewaterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeatingthe valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall,Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in theback of Waipio.Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. The rest ofthe afternoon is free.

There is an optional tour to the Mauna KeaSummit Observatories departing at 4:00pmfrom the House.

The Mauna Kea Observatories are anindependent collection of astronomical

research facilities located on the summit ofMauna Kea at almost 14,000 feet high. Thelocation is ideal for astronomical viewingbecause of its dark skies, towering positionabove most of the water vapor in theatmosphere, clean air, good weather and analmost equatorial location. It is an optimallocation for submillimeter, infrared andoptical observations. A dinner box isprovided. (b & l, dinner box for the summittour)

February 17 • Hawaii Volcanoes National ParkHawaii Volcanoes National Parkencompasses two active volcanoes: Kilauea,one of the world's most active volcanoes; andMauna Loa, the world's most massivevolcano. The park gives scientists insight intothe birth of the Hawaiian Island and ongoingstudies into the processes of volcanism.Experience the dramatic volcanic landscapes

and rare flora and fauna found here. Inrecognition of its outstanding natural values,Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was designatedas an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980 anda World Heritage Site in 1987. The best andclosest place to observe a volcanic eruption isfrom Jaggar Museum overlook, and othervantage points at the summit of Kilauea thatprovide views of Halema'uma'u Crater.

During daylight, the robust plume of volcanicgas is a constant and dramatic reminder of themolten rock churning in a lava lake beneath thecrater floor. After sunset, Halema'uma'ucontinues to thrill visitors with a vivid glow thatilluminates the clouds and the plume as it billowsinto the night sky.

An optional 4 miles hike of Kealau Ikki trailthrough the crater and lush plants is invigoratingfor an intimate experience of the volcanic terrainand ecology.

February 18 • Hawaiian Tropical Botanical GardenIThe morning is free for personal exploration.You may take a yoga class, enjoy a massage at thehouse or visit the farmer’s market.

In the afternoon, tour the famous "Garden in aValley on the Ocean" located on the lushHamakua Coast's 4 Mile Scenic Drive. TheHawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a museum ofliving plants that attracts photographers,gardeners, botanists, scientists, and nature loversfrom around the world. The Garden's collectionof tropical plants is international in scope. Over2,000 species, representing more than 125 familiesand 750 genera, are found in this one-of-a-kindgarden.

The 40-acre valley is a natural greenhouse,protected from buffeting tradewinds and blessed

with fertile volcanic soil. Throughout thisgarden valley, nature trails meander througha true tropical rainforest, crossing bubblingstreams, passing several beautiful waterfallsand exciting ocean vistas along the ruggedPacific coast.

Return to Hilo and enjoy a walk onRichardson Beach by the Bay, with miles ofrocky seawalls and parks where you’ll findlocals swimming, diving, surfing, fishingand picnicking.

F A C U L T Y L E A D E RSuzan Edwards is the L. Clarke Seelye Professor of Astronomy at Smithand Chair of the Five College Astronomy Department. She joined theSmith faculty in 1980, arriving in Northampton just after receiving herPhD in Astronomy at the University of Hawai’ i Manoa. As a graduatestudent in Hawai’ i she spent considerable t ime on the summit of MaunaKea, using the telescopes there for her research on young stars, and alsotravell ing extensively in the Hawaiian Islands, where she studied tradi-t ional Hawaiian language, chant and dance, reveling in the outdoorbeauty of Hawaii as an avid bodysurfer, hiker, and scuba diver. To thisday, she maintains close t ies to Hawaii , continuing to use the newest tel-escopes of the Mauna Kea Observatories for her research on the forma-tion of stars and planetary systems. At Smith she teaches a wide range ofastronomy classes, ranging from topics with a wide appeal , such as The

Sky and Time: The Astronomical Roots of Timekeeping to special ized courses in astrophysicsfor astronomy majors. Suzan has also co-led a year-long faculty/student seminar at Smith’sKahn Liberal Arts Insti tute on the topic Placing Space. She is active on national committeesrun by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Academy of Sciences, as wellas Smith committees, including the Committee on Tenure and Promotion and the AdvisoryCommittee on Faculty Appointments.
