ldquoManikantan put your Schoolbagwhere it belongsrdquo said theCoffee Table

ldquoYes Manikantanrdquo agreed theSchoolbag ldquoI donrsquot belong hereI suggest you put me in yourRoom in a proper placerdquo

Mani knew better than to argue He picked up the Schoolbag andtrudged towards his Room He put away his Schoolbag on the Deskkicked off his Shoes and then lay down on the Bed He groaned

ldquoAre you not feeling well Manikantanrdquo asked the RoomldquoIrsquom fine Leave me alonerdquo Mani moved the Amulet to the back of his neck He longed to throw itinto the Trash The objects in the House would still be able to spy on himbut at least they wouldnrsquot be able to talk to him

ldquoYou groaned twicerdquo The Roomrsquos voice sounded muffled ldquoDo you havea headache ManikantanrdquoldquoLeave me alonerdquo Then after a pause Mani added ldquoYesrdquo

ldquoTsk tsk So sorry to hear that Manikantanrdquo The Room sounded verysympathetic ldquoI have let your Amma know Perhaps you are hungry Thatmay be why yoursquore having a headache How about a nice hot cup of chaiand some pakodas

3

4

Chai and pakodas would be nice though Mani wished the Room hadnrsquottold amma he had a headache Now she would worryldquoOkayrdquo

ldquoGreat I have told the Kitchen And Manikantan put your Shoes in theShoeRackrdquo

ldquoYesrdquo said the ShoeRack ldquoI have plenty of space Waitingrdquo

Mani knew he should get up but he didnrsquot feel like it Maybe he shouldjust sleep a little He was so tired

ldquoWaitingrdquo said the ShoeRack

Mani closed his eyes and thought of Anandpuram His Amma called it avillage but to Mani it was home

5

He recalled the graceful sway ofthe tall palm trees and the vastrose-blue sky In the morning thegentle gusts of wind carried thewonderful smell of porottascooking over charcoal fires Thewinter months were the bestThe cool air was nothing like theair-conditioned air in Smart Cityrsquosbuildings

6

No wait the rainy season wasthe best It was such fun towatch the fat heavy warmdroplets splish-splosh into theriver Periyar

Oh how hersquod enjoyed sitting bythe riverbank So quiet sopeaceful If only things could goback to the way they had been

7

ldquoWaitingrdquo said the ShoeRack

Mani sat up with a sigh He didnrsquot mind being given helpful hints butthis was too much It was almost like being a prisoner and nobody noteven Amma understood Mani placed the Shoes on the ShoeRack andheaded for the Kitchen

He had to warm the pakodas himself but the FoodGenie brewed somechai It tasted exactly like the kind of chai a machine would make

ldquoIs the chai to your satisfaction Manikantanrdquo asked the FoodGenie

ldquoAs good as cow urinerdquo

ldquoThank yourdquo

8

9

Manirsquos Amulet beeped It was his mother She wanted to know whetherhe was feeling better

ldquoHow is your headache kannardquo Her loving voice made Mani feel verysorry for himself

ldquoThe headachersquos better Amma Howrsquos workrdquo

ldquoWonderful Itrsquos not like my old Anandpuram job at all How was yourday kannardquo

ldquoGreatrdquo

10

His Amma worked so hard such long hours worried so much abouthim cared so much She was his mother and father and all the family hehad in the world He just didnrsquot have the heart to tell the truth

ldquoI had a great dayrdquo

ldquoYou sure Mani Your SchoolBag told me you were sent to the PrincipalWhat was that aboutrdquoldquoNothingrdquo

ldquoManirdquo

ldquoNothing You can ask the Schoolbag It seems to know everythingrdquo

ldquoMani whatrsquos the matter Look why donrsquot you go to the Mirror I wantto see you Whatever the problem is we can solve itrdquo

11

ldquoNo we canrsquot solve itrdquo Mani felt tears beginning to form He tried topress back the tears but they kept coming like the rain on Periyar He knew the House would report to his mother that her son was cryingEverything he did was watched and reported He knew it was all for hisown good and he knew Amma loved him but sometimes he wantedthings to be

He closed his finger around the Amulet and pulled the chain so hard itsnapped Mani threw the Amulet into the Trash and ignoring itsshouting ran out of the apartment

Mani didnrsquot know how long he ran or where he went or how exactly hegot lost

12

13

Without the Amulet to guide him he simply didnrsquot know where he wasgoing But the smart objects of the City had guessed he was lost andalerted the proper authorities

After his mother had thanked the nice policeman who brought himback Mani took the Amulet from her He was ashamed but also reallyglad to be back

ldquoI have adjusted some of the settingsrdquo said his mother ldquoThe House willnow give you a little more privacy But it is really for your own goodManirdquoldquoI knowrdquo mumbled Mani

ldquoSo how was it your little adventurerdquo

Mani shuddered The streets had been filled with people but they wereall somehow different They were all strangers With the Amulet thestreets were filled with many people he almost knew Their names thekind of music they liked who their friends were lots of fun stuff like that

14

Without the Amulet even simplethings like crossing the streetshad become difficult There wasno voice to tell him ldquoYou cancross now Manikantanrdquo Andnobody knew him either

When he had passed the posterfor the movie Mission Maut thehero of the movie Vikram Sevensaid ldquoHi do you like actionmoviesrdquo

If hersquod had the Amulet Vikramwould have said ldquoHeyManikantan nice to see youagain yaar letrsquos talkrdquo

15

Without the Amulet every object was as stupid as a stone

16

ldquoI thought sordquo said his mother with a small smile ldquoNow Mani youknow you shouldnrsquot have left the House without the Amulet We wereso worriedrdquo

ldquoIrsquom sorry I broke the rules Ammardquo

ldquoThatrsquos not always a bad thing kanna But you are a big boy now Youhave to be more mature Our life here is pretty happy nardquo

Mani thought of Anandpuram An Amulet would be pretty useless inAnandapuram Maybe that wasnrsquot such a good thing He nodded

His mother was very sweet She prepared dinner by hand mdash well mostlyby hand the FoodGenie helped just a little

17

Then she read him a story as hedrank his milk Later she tuckedhim into bed gave him a good-night kiss and touched herAmulet to his He could tellAmma was very tired

ldquoGood night Ammardquo

ldquoGood night kannardquo

18

ldquoGood night Manikantan goodnight Ammardquo whispered theHouse ldquoSleep tight and I wonrsquotlet the bedbugs biterdquo

The Internet of ThingsDoes your alarm clock know that you have exams tomorrow Will it remind you to setthe alarm so that you can get up early to do a final revision If you are going somewhereand get lost can your shoes give step-by-step directions Of course not

Today most of the objects we are surrounded are just objects They donrsquot really knowanything about you or the objects in the house The clock is just a clock The radio is justa radio The clock does not know what the radio does and vice versa They are notconnected to you or to other people or to the objects in the world But things are about to change Soon all human-made objects will be interconnectedThey will be more aware of what is going on around them They will be smarter They willbe able to exchange data and keep track of your needs in a better way When objects getinterconnected and can communicate with each other as if by an invisible telephonenetwork we say we have an Internet of ThingsIf it were up to you would you like to live in Smart City or in Anandpur Why

20

What if they all started talking

Count the number of objects in your home orclassroom (door chair clock radio books etc) Areyou surprised by the number

Imagine how it would be if they could all see andhear and speak How would your life change
