Datum’s new bc420/427VXI RF PulseAnalyzer is a breakthrough product for thehigh data rate acquisition and analysis ofradar and Electronic Intelligence, ELINT,signals in a compact VXI module architec-ture. The bc420/427VXI measures andrecords Pulse Width, PW, PulseRepetition Interval, PRI, and frequency ofa pulsed RF input on a pulse-to-pulsebasis. The standard bc420VXI uses anexternal 1 PPS reference input as the tim-ing source. The bc427VXI adds an inter-nal GPS receiver module, providing a tim-ing source that is directly traceable tointernational time standards. Other RF

pulse analysis instruments can samplepulse parameters and frequency, but notcontinuously. The bc420/427VXI, by virtueof its state of the art DSP RF processingtechnology, offers a unique capability ofacquiring PW, PRI, and frequency of allpulses, in real time, continuously. Thisbreakthrough is especially valuable forthe analysis of the doppler and agile puls-ing characteristics of current generationradar and EW systems, where acquisitionand analysis of ALL pulses is needed tocompletely characterize the test or targetsystem.

The bc420VXI is supported with an option-al LabVIEW® control, acquisition andanalysis virtual control panel applicationprogram. Through this virtual controlpanel, all bc420VXI functionality can becontrolled and RF pulse data can beacquired and stored in the host computer.Statistical data is displayed on screen andoutput in report form, as well as a near-real-time analysis of the data that indi-cates PW, PRI, and frequency (the fre-quency in the pulse).

Technical Description

The bc420VXI combines the functions of a frequencycounter and a time-interval analyzer in a single-widthVXIbus instrument. It processes a continuous or pulsed RFinput signal with a frequency ranging from 100 MHz to 2GHz. A portion of the RF input is processed in an envelopedetector and threshold comparator to create a digitalpulse-shape waveform. In parallel, the RF input is coupledto a high-speed frequency counter that counts the numberof RF cycles within the pulse window. The digital pulsedoutput is sampled in time-capture circuitry that measuresthe pulse width and pulse repetition interval, PRI. In orderto process data at the rate necessary for real-time meas-urement and storage, the bc420VXI requires a dedicatedDigital Signal Processor, DSP. A Texas InstrumentsTMS320F240 DSP provides real-time measurements of thepulse width, PRI and frequency of input RF pulses withpulse rates up to 10,000 pulses per second. The DSP alsoprovides adjustable threshold and gain settings, on-linecalibration, time tagging, and data storage of the measureddata. A phase-locked loop is used to time-correct the on-board crystal oscillator with either an external 1 PPS refer-ence or, in the bc427VXI, the GPS 1 PPS clock. A VXIbusinterface chip set is used to interface the bc420VXI to thehost computer for functional control, accessing GPS timecode data and archiving pulse data. A dual-port RAM isused to temporarily store pulse data that is read by thehost computer through the VXIbus.
