HISTORY

Coaching is a newly emerging profession in Spain. It was bornpractically in this century.The EMCE project was originally created in April of 2006 with theintention of getting to know and spreading information about thecurrent situation of the coaching profession in Spain, as well as toevaluate its development and to detect its possible needs.EMCE´06 * was first published in November of 2006, and itincorporates the results obtained in 2005 as well as the possibleprospectives for 2006.We decided that this survey should be bi-annual and should bedeveloped and managed in an independent manner by theundersigned team.EMCE´08 ** was published in May of 2008, incorporating the resultsobtained in 2007 as well as the possible prospectives for 2008.

To get know the market for executive coaching in Spain from the coaches’point of view that are working in this market segment, to help them makedecisions that could influence them in their performance and professionaloutcome.

We consider this market to be composed of:the players,their practices,their size in numbers and value,their prospectives for one year and

their unsatisfied needs that might help in their development.

INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS 

Results. In the results are included the participants answers to 83questions that covered the following areas: demography and training;coaching as a profession; features of coaching procedures; hiringcoaching services; hiring of coaches; evaluation of the market and thesupervision of coaching procedures.

Validation. Some of the answers have been eliminated during thevalidation phase due to errors and answers that were out of anacceptable range.

Reliability. The reliability of the results is limited, as they are in otherpublications in this field, because they don´t cover a representativesample of the profession. The reliability of this survey can beconsidered “acceptable” in the case of most of the results given,except in the specific cases of the chapters covering “volume andvalue of the market” and the new area of “supervision of coachingprocedures” which we consider to be only of “average” reliability.

Filtering is a procedure that permits us to isolate all the answers given by the persons surveyed, using only one variable of the questionnaire. That way, if we decide to filter according to the variable “men”, the answers obtained will be those given by men.

Criteria used in the usage of the results of the survey after applying filters

2.1 If after applying the filter, the number of resulting questionnaires is less than 5,we have discarded analyzing the results- considering that the answers wouldbe biased- and therefore, not very significant in their relationship to the rest ofthe group.

2.2 After having applied the filters the results were compared, first of all, withresults produced by the general population (without filters). If the structure ofthe answers was maintained, and the differences between the possibleanswers did not exceed 10 points, we considered this difference insginificantand thus point out in the comments we made in the following section of thisreport:

Average length of sessionsThere is a slight difference in the sessions that last 60´: they are preferred by women (60%) vs. Men (40%).

Type of coachee you work withMen work more than women with top managers and other managers (41% men) vs. (26% women).

Fee charged for your servicesFrom the data collected, we conclude that women charge 13% less (average =273€) than men (average= 312€). A proportion that is maintained even when they are working for intermediary companies (consulting firms or training centers): women charge 171€, 11% less than the men (average=190€).

Filter: years of practice (experience)

There are noticeable differences deriving from the number of years of experience:

-Coaches with less than one year experience:do not work with top managers their fees are nettly inferior to the average of the whole group: 239€ vs. 305€, when direct hiring, although in indirect hiring not so much: 163€ vs. 195€.

-Coaches with more than one year experience:do work with top managerstheir fees are 352€ if hired directly by the client, and are 202€ when they work through a consulting firm.

- Coaches with more than 10 years experience:this group has the highest fees: 483€ per session; not many work through consulting firms, but those that do still have lower fees (217€)

- The difference in the length of the sessions, nº of sessions, etc. does not vary much depending on the years of experience

What variables affect the length of the session?There are only noticeable differences in sessions that last more than 120min. The coaches that do this length of session are usually men, they stand out in a significant way due to their academic degrees (in this case, in the fields of science, engineering, etc. 22% vs. 39%), standing out in this group those coaches that have been certified as coaches in programs endorsed by AECOP or other institutions, as compared to those certified in institutions endorsed by ICF or ASESCO. Coaches that have more than 10 years experience also tend to do sessions of more than 120´.

In a coherent way, 50% of those that answered under this condition (sessions lasting 120´) say that the lenght of their coaching processes are more than 16 hours long (as compared to 32% of the group as a whole).

Coachees´profileIt is only in the case of hiring done by the top manager where there is a significant difference: in the hiring done by top managers there are more coachees that have experience coaching top managers and board of directors ( up from 16% to 36%)

Fee RatesWhen hiring is done directly by the top manager, the fee rate is higher (338€) and less if the hiring is done by human resources (325€) or by the coachee directly (262€). The opposite happens if hiring is done through a consulting firm, training center etc. (181€, 190€ and 203€).
