    Creating a New Autism Centerat the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital

    Autism Center Mission

    Given the increase in children diagnosed with ASD, most people knowsomeone whose lie is aected by autism. Thereore, easy access to au-tism services and resources or amilies across the state o Iowa is needed

    more than ever.

    With the unique needs o children with ASD, amilies oten have to de-cide what services to arrange or their child and where to nd local ser-vice providers. In addition, amilies are oten expected to communicatethe results o their childs evaluations with others and to coordinate ser-vices with local doctors, educators, and service providers. These servicesare oten difcult to nd, leaving amilies eeling rustrated and helplessin meeting the needs o their child.

    The Autism Center was developed to make this process easier or ami-

    lies here at Childrens Hospital and across the state o Iowa. Based onamily needs and solid research, the Autism Center has identied themost eective services or individuals with ASD and their amilies. Thisincludes partnering with several clinics and specialists across Universityo Iowas Childrens Hospital. The Autism Center is a partnership o theCenter or Disabilities and Development, the Department o Pediatrics,and the Department o Psychiatry.

    in autism science, educa-

    tion, and service.

    A Few Basic Facts:

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) afects 1 in 110 childrenThere are about 6,500 children with an ASD in IowaThere are even larger numbers o adults with ASD in the stateThere are about 360 newly diagnosed children with ASD in Iowa each year

    General Goals:

    nProvide eective clinical services orindividuals with ASD and their amilies

    nPartner with and support autism ser-

    vices across the state

    nProvide training or those who serve

    individuals with ASD

    nCarry out world-class research on

    causes and interventions or ASD

    What services arecurrently provided?

    l I you think your child may

    have autism, an evalua-

    tion by a select team o

    specialists will be provid-ed. This may include a pe-

    diatrician, nurse, psychia-

    trist, psychologist, speech/

    language pathologist,

    audiologist, social worker,

    or educational consultant.

    l Development o a treat-

    ment plan that is individu-

    alized to meet your childs

    needs, such as strategiesor education, behavior

    management, social and

    communication goals, dai-

    ly living skills, and medica-

    tion management.

    l Evaluation and treatment

    o challenging behaviors

    (e.g., tantrums, aggres-

    sion, sel-injury)

    l Evaluation and treatmento eeding difculties and

    nutrition concerns is avail-

    able when needed

    l Services and resources

    or adults with autism or

    Aspergers syndrome

    resources near your home

    What happens beforemy childs appointment?

    l Once the type o service(s)

    needed is determined by

    scheduling sta, your child

    will be scheduled with the

    appropriate clinic or team o

    specialists.

    l These services may be pro-

    vided in dierent clinics at

    Childrens Hospital: the ChildPsychiatry Clinic, Pediatric

    Psychology Clinic, or the

    Healy Clinic at the Center or

    Disabilities and Development.

    l I your child requires multiple

    services during their visit, the

    Autism Center will help coor-

    dinate these services or you.

    l Prior to your childs visit, you

    will be asked to completea parent questionnaire and

    several other orms. This in-

    ormation helps our teams

    better understand your childs

    history and specic needs.

    This allows us to provide the

    best and most efcient evalu-

    ation or your child.

    l Based on your childs needs,

    you will be sent resources

    that identiy steps you can

    take or your child and amily

    prior to your childs appoint-

    ment.

    What happens duringmy childs appointment?

    l Depending on your childs

    needs, they may see a vari-

    ety o specialists and service

    providers. This may include a

    pediatrician, speech therapist,

    audiologist, psychologist,

    psychiatrist, educational con-sultant, occupational thera-

    pist, physical therapist, nurse,

    or social worker.

    l Ater you check-in or your

    appointment, you and your

    child will be introduced to

    one o the specialists who will

    be working with you that day.

    This person will explain who

    your child will be seeing thatday, what your child will be

    doing, and what your day will

    look like.

    l Your child will then see one

    o the team specialists. Each

    specialist may work with your

    child or 30 to 120 minutes

    depending on the age and

    needs o your child.

    lSometimes you will be askedto stay with your child while

    they are being evaluated by

    a specialist. Other times, you

    may be asked to observe or

    be interviewed by one o the

    other specialists while your

    child is working with a team

    member.

    l Ater your child meets with

    each specialist, the specialist

    will discuss their ndings with

    you, either individually or

    with the team.

    l The team o specialists will

    share their recommendations

    or your child and answer any

    questions you may have.

    l A ollow-up plan or next

    steps will be discussed.

    What happens aftermy childs appointment?

    Following your appointment,arrangements will be made to

    speak with you about your childs

    progress, to answer questions,

    and problem solve as needed.

    vention options.
