The Woman’s Clinic, PA Welcomes Holly Smith, Certified Nurse Midwife

To say that I am excited to be joining The Woman’s Clinic as their first

Certified Nurse-Midwife would be a huge understatement! I have been privileged to work in conjunction with these physicians for many years and I have been blessed to have been cared for by the entire clinic as a patient for several years as well. I could not be happier to be a part of such an amazing group of physicians, nurses and staff!

“What, exactly, do you do?” That would be the most common question I am asked in my profession. The word “midwife” alone conjures up a wealth of

visions and misconceptions. It is Old English in origin and means “with woman” and, in many ways, that is exactly what we do. Midwives have been helping women deliver babies for thousands of years with some of the earliest references being in the Bible; however, the profession has evolved tremendously since the early years.

Today, nurse-midwives provide well-woman care, family planning with prescribing of birth control methods, annual exams, evaluation and management of minor gynecological problems as well as prenatal care and delivery services. Generally, a nurse-midwife will see lower-risk pregnancies but when we work closely with obstetricians, we may take patients with some selected risk factors.

During pregnancy, a nurse-midwife generally spends a lot of time during the prenatal visits focusing on and addressing a woman’s individual needs and concerns, then we stay with her as much as possible throughout the labor process. It is my priority to encourage, teach, educate and empower women to improve their pregnancies, labor and birth. Women who come to a nurse-midwife may choose natural labor and birth or she may opt for pain management through intravenous pain

medication or epidural anesthesia. Although we are trained in holistic techniques, we are also proficient in the use of medical interventions should the need arise. As always, emergency care and Woman’s Clinic obstetricians are available at all times. Delivery services are provided at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Following delivery, we provide post-partum follow-up care, breastfeeding support and family planning. Then the cycle begins again. The relationship between the midwife and the woman continues through her annual exams or any problem gynecological visits she may have from that point on or until another pregnancy begins.

The physicians of the Woman’s Clinic hold true to their mission. The Woman’s Clinic’s mission is to be the clinic of choice for women by providing exceptional and compassionate care for each woman with personalized attention, tailored to all stages of her life ~ “One woman at a time.” As we tailor our services, we have determined that many women may want a woman with them during their labor.

Holly is a clinician who loves to spoil her patients. She wants to be with them and play a part in the new life’s journey the parents are embarking on. Women rave about her service and compassion. I know that this innovative new juncture will take a great organization to new horizons and exciting experiences for all involved thus resulting in our goal of excellence. Welcome aboard, Holly - Jon Ewing, Executive Administrator, Woman’s Clinic, PA.

Meet Katie Chandler, wife, mother of two and recipient of the first Charter Business Impact Award. This award presented

to Katie by Brandi Wilson of Charter Business will be the first of several given to women who will be recognized by Charter and The Women’s Journal. Katie is currently Director of Guest Resources at Jackson Madison County General Hospital which covers several areas including volunteers, interpreters, chaplains, hospitality houses, gift shops, Women’s Boutique and Baby Shop and maintaining staffed waiting rooms.

Katie also finds time in her busy schedule to do volunteer

work which has been a very important part of her life for many years. She is President-elect of the Jackson Old Hickory Rotary Club and is on the Imagination Library Board, where she acts as chairman of the Imagination Library Putt-Putt Golf Tournament. Both these organizations focus on education, as they raise thousands of dollars for scholarships and other educational projects. Previously, she has been President of the Children’s Museum Board, and a board member of Leadership Jackson and the Leadership University Board and also a graduate of Leadership Jackson and West Star.

Even though Katie has enjoyed other jobs with Lifeline Blood Services and The Chamber, working in a non-profit field is where her heart lies. “I say to myself every day, there is always good to be done here, and when you are not smiling go up stairs and help someone find their way, and that will make you smile. It’s all about the folks every day,” she said. It is obvious that Katie is a true humanitarian.

The driving force behind Katie’s enthusiasm is primarily a

personal desire to see Madison County prosper in community and educational development. So you can easily see why Katie Chandler was the perfect choice for the first Charter Business Impact Award. In presenting the award, Brandi Wilson said, “The award is for women who balance work, community and family and do it with a smile. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Katie on a bad day!”
