How to Auto Detect a Graphics

    Card

    by B. Steele, Demand Media

Installing a dedicate graphics card is a great performance

upgrade for your office PCs, even if your business doesnt

involve video editing or other graphics-intensive work.

Graphics cards contain their own on-board processors and

memory, and remove the burden of rendering graphics and

video from your computers CPU and RAM. However, if

integrated video is enabled in your systems Basic

Input/Output System, or BIOS, your computer may not initialize

    the graphics card at boot.

  • Step 1

Reboot your computer and press the appropriate key to enter

BIOS, or setup as its sometimes called. The key you need to

use for this appears briefly on the screen as the computer

boots up, but common keys are F1, ESC and Delete.

    Step 2

Use your arrow keys to locate the On-board Devices,

Integrated Peripherals, Advanced or Video section. The exact

location varies depending on BIOS vendor and version. The

appropriate menu enables you to disable or enable integrated

or dedicated graphics, and may offer an auto-detect option.

    Step 3

Enable the auto-detect option, if available. Otherwise, enable

the Dedicated or Discrete video card option. You may also

need to specify which slot the card is installed in, which is

commonly PCI or PCI Express. Look at your graphics cards

user manual or retail packaging for the slot type if youre

unsure. Depending on your computer and BIOS, you may have

to disable your integrated video in order to enable the graphics

    card.

    Step 4

Press Esc until you arrive at the main menu, and then press

the appropriate key to save and exit, which is usually F10.

    The system reboots.

    Step 5

Unplug your video cable from the computers integrated

graphics port, and then plug it into your graphics card.
