Pre-Installation

Log on to the computer as a member of the Administrators group.

Make sure that if Hummingbird BI Query and/or Oracle were previously installed on this computer, that you have completely uninstalled them using the instructions available separately.

Note: Throughout the installation process, if a Windows Firewall Security Alert or a User Account Control dialog box appears, click "Unblock" or "Allow" as needed to permit installation and running of the necessary applications.

Supported Environments and Minimum Requirements

Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP2 or later; Windows Vista Enterprise

CPU: Minimum PIII 350 Mhz, Recommended CPU PIII 1 GHz or better

RAM: Minimum 256 MB, Recommended 512 MB or more

Required Free HD Space: 500 MB

Oracle Connectivity: Oracle 10g or 11g

Only install BI Query 10 and Oracle 11 in Windows Vista or Windows 7 machines. Windows XP machines should have BI Query 9 and Oracle 10 installed because those versions have fewer bugs.

Install Data Warehouse Models (Only for New Users)

Determine if the user already has data warehouse models that they have been using. The models might be located on this computer, on their old computer if you are replacing it, on a personal or shared network drive, or possibly backed up to some other media. The default location of the data warehouse models is under C:\DWModels. You can search for *.gqu files, if neither you nor the user knows the location of the files.

If the user already has data models installed on this computer, you can skip to the next step of this installation process, although if the models aren't getting backed up automatically on a regular basis, this would be a good time to back them up by copying the DWModels folder to a safe location like the user's personal directory on a network drive.

If the user has data models available on another computer or backed up somewhere, to install them on this computer, you can just copy that DWModels folder to this computer's C:\ drive, or other desired location.

When no other copies are available, to install a clean set of models without any user customizations, or any user-created queries or reports, go to \\TSS-SoftStore\Software\Data Warehouse\Models and click on DWModels.exe.

Click "Next>".

Read the warnings. If you are sure that you have backed up any existing data models, click "Next >".

Typically you select only the OSU Base Models. Select any additional required models and click "Next >".

When the dialog box disappears, the installation of the data warehouse models is done.

The default installation location is on the C: drive, but if you want to change the location to their personal directory on a network drive so that it is regularly backed up and accessible from any computer they are logged onto, or the \My Documents folder so that folks sharing a computer can each have their own private copy, this would be a good time to make that change. Just move the entire DWModels folder to the desired location.

Do not place the data warehouse model folders on the Windows desktop, although you can create shortcuts on the desktop to the application and/or directly to the *.gqu file of the models.

If you are installing the models for a person who doesn't have administrative rights on their computer, either grant them full control of the C:\DWModels folder and its subfolders, or move the folder to a location where the user is permitted full control of the folder.

Install BI Query

Run \\TSS-SoftStore\Software\Data Warehouse\BIQuery\10\Installer\BIQuery10Install.bat.

If you get a Windows Security Alert like the example shown above, click "Unblock".

Close the "Welcome to BI Query Reports" dialog box.

Close BI Query Reports.

Wait for Command window to close, then wait several minutes for the javaw.exe process to end (you can watch it in windows task manager), and for the Oracle directory to appear in the start menu.

If you get a Windows Security Alert like the example shown above, click "Unblock".

Install the TNSNames.ORA file (Optional)

A TNSNames.ora file containing all of the entries needed for accessing OSU's data warehouse is

automatically installed for you when the Oracle 11 installation completes successfully. No other action is

needed, unless you require a customized version of the TNSNAMES.ORA file with additional entries.

To install a customized version of the file, such as one you backed up to a safe place like a customer’s

personal network drive, save it in C:\Oracle\Ora11\network\admin.

If you need to re-install the standard version, copy it from

\\TSS-SoftStore\Software\Oracle\11\TNSNames\OSU\TNSNAMES.ORA to

C:\Oracle\Ora11\network\admin.

Test the Connection to the Database

Go to Start > Programs > Open Text > Livelink ECM – Business Intelligence > BI Query > BI Query User

Click on button left of "Local Data Model".

Navigate to a data model that the user will access and open it. The file will typically be in a location like

C:\DWModels\OSU\modelname\user\modelname.gqu where modelname is finance, humres, or

student, unless they are using the OUS data warehouses.

For example, to open the OSU Human Resources data warehouse, open

c:\DWModels\OSU\Humres\User\Humres.gqu.

The first time a user goes into each model in BI 10, they may see the following error message:

Click "OK".

Click "OK".

go there and choose that Connections folder).

Click "Close". Then do File > Save.

Close the model. Then reopen it using the same instructions as before.

The login dialog box should open automatically. Test the connection by logging in with either the test

User ID or have the user log in with their own User ID and password.

OSU DCAs may contact Patty Ross (7-0616) or Carla Cogburn (7-2671) for the test User ID and password set up for DWPROD. (Note: It is the same one used in previous upgrades.) Testing any other connections will require the warehouse user to log in with their own User ID and password.

If the connection is successful, you can test the connection by clicking on the "News" button on the

home page of the model. Here's an example for the location of the "News" button in the Humres model.

Running the News report should bring up a window similar to this if the connection was successful.
