    Using the Keyboard and Mouse

The efficient usage of all three buttons one the mouse, along with the CTRLkey on the keyboard, this helps reduce the time involved in completing the design task.

    - Hard to get used to at first.

    - Similar to any other CAD packages such as Solidworks, unigraphic or Alias etc...

    - Solid modeling are best use in the power train area since is doesnt containcomplex surfaces.

What to Model using Part Design :

    - Solid modeling are best use in the powertrain area since is doesnt contain complexsurfaces, and any other Mechanical part.

    1. Before you start modelling Your

design-Determine the overall Length/width and Height of your Vehicle- Than As a team set a reference system, determine what plane is which- (XZ) (centre Origin) (between the front and back)

    - Side (YZ) (which is also your centre Symmetry Plane)

    - Top / Bottom offset from XY- Back (create an offset Plane to Front)- Front (Create an Offset Plane to XZ)

The Wireframe and Surface Design workbench is also a parametric andfeature-based environment, in which you can create wireframe or surfacemodels.

The tools in this workbench are similar to those in the Part Designworkbench, with the only difference that the tools in this environment are

used to create basic and advanced surfaces.

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    26/54

Wireframe-The wireframe construction elements aid in creating surfaces andare used as a substitute to entities drawn in the Sketcherworkbench, consist of lines it doesn't have to be closed

Surface Surface are geometric feature which have no thickness. They are generally used to create complex shapes that are difficultto create using the solid feature.- To create a surface you need a 3d curve/lines and a Path/spine

    Advantages of Using surfaces:

-Your Profile Doesn't haveto have a thickness.

    - Solid/thickness can beapply once the design is atfinal stage.-Your Profile doesn'thave to be close-Easy to work with 3d Curves-and it quicker ...- it allowed you to modelcomplex surface

In the Automotive design Industry there are 3 class of surfaces:-Surfaces Class A ( is any eternal surface that can be seen by the eyes-Surfaces Class B (is the surface that is touching another surface)

-Surfaces Class C ( is the hidden surface that can not be seen by the eye)

Ideally you would use surface for Class A external body of the vehicle

-If you want to be Creative and be more advance the Imagine &

shape workbench is a great way to do free 3d modellingwithout any non-restriction.

    - it basically like playing with Clay, and modelling it into thedesired shape you want, but it will take a while to get used to ifyou are not familiar with the interface.

    - Real time Rendering is a work Bench that allowed designers toexamine the final product in an ideal environment by applying textureand lighting effect. In another word creating a virtual environment.

Assuming : that you covered in week one with the other Tutor.-He should show how you go about setting up the basic environment

-such as lighting- material- perspective- textures- Shadows

-communicate with each others about any changes that is being madeto each of the individual part.Team member might be working of your old parts-Establish a Coordinate referencing system, best way to do so is usingAssembly workbench, once one of the part if beingfinish model you can inset new body part and work off theexisting reference of the first part.

-Last of all there are No Right or Wrong way of Modelling.......

    - theres Just a Quicker ways....

Before you Start Modelling as a team establish the

team Part numbering system, This will Allows CATIAto Automatically create a BOM list with a single click.

    Numbering system format:

    Example:

    14277 BF400 -001

    project number Subsystem Number-Part number

This will Help you with your Assignment 2

    48/54

It is a means of describing the following aspects of the design: The various possible interactions between the design conceptand the totality of its external environment these:

    Define design parameters

    Constrain possible solutions

    Affect material choice

    Influence geometry and shape

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    49/54

It is a means of describing the following aspects of the design: The relationships among, and between, its various parts orcomponents these:

    Influence function

    Influence form and aesthetics

    Confer (cf) operating characteristics

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    50/54

This description will contain text-based, graphical andnumerical parts

Through achieving inclusivity, it allows clearer identification ofpotential areas of innovation

It forms the basis for rational choice between potential

    solutions

It is performed for the overall concept and for sub-systems

It allows for iteration between later and earlier stages in thedesign process

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    51/54

In simple terms a design envelope summarises:

    Requirements

Attributes that the solution must have to satisfy external orinternal parameters

The more specific these become, reflecting betterquantification of aspects of the problem, the better thepotential solution choice and problem understanding

e.g. it must not be too heavy, cf it should weight less than 25 kgto meet COSH lifting guidelines

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    52/54

    52

In simple terms a design envelope summarises:

    Constraints

Limitations on design characteristics imposed by external orinternal parameters

The more specific these become, reflecting betterquantification of aspects of the problem, the better thepotential solution choice and problem understanding

e.g. it must operate quickly, cf it should have a response time of10 s (power implications etc)

  • 8/3/2019 AUTO1019-Motor Vehicles Design

    53/54

In simple terms a design envelope summarises:

    Criteria

Critical design characteristics imposed by external or internalparameters

These are used to assess optimality of proposed solutions -very specific identification of these will assist greatly inchoosing between various proposals

e.g. it must be failsafe in use, cf it must cut electrical power in100ms if a short circuit occurs
