Module Objectives

After the completion of this module, the student will be able to: 1. Identify the importance of freehand pictorial

sketching.2. Correctly produce good quality freehand

pictorial sketches.

Introduction

Freehand sketching is a very important skill in Design and Graphics that everyone can improve. Sketches can transfer ideas, instructions, and information in a clear and concise way however; this requires the sketches to have the same proportions as the original drawing/object.

An example is shown in the next figures.

Sketching

Sketching requires drawing freehand straight lines that are nearly straight. To draw a nearly straight line from one point (A) to another (B). With the pencil on point A, look to the point B then draw the line as shown below

Sketching

Don’t look at the pencil point. Look to the point where you are going to. Your line should be as straight as the one shown below

Isometric Projection

Isometric drawings are drawn with the aid of a 60/30 set square and a tee square. Isometric drawings are constructed using lines at 30° to the horizontal and vertical lines as shown in the next figures.

Isometric Projection

Note: isometric drawings use the same stages as sketching• Always start by faintly drawing the three axes of the

component with the 60/30 set square.• Make off the height, width and length along the

appropriate axis. Fig. 3.5 a.• Complete the box that will contain the finished object.

Fig. 3.5 b.• Still using feint lines build in the shape required. Fig.3.5

c.• Finally line in with a more bold line type. Fig. 3.5 d.
