Automated Creation of BIBFRAME Data Using MARCEditTesting BIBFRAME Crosswalk of the Croatian National Bibliography

Libraries has low visibility in general but even more in visibility and publiclyunawareness of quality bibliographic data especially on the Web

To change that, in 2011, the Library of Congress in Washington launched aninitiative to create a new conceptual model which should inherit the MARCformat and the BIBFRAME (Bibliographic Framework) model was beenintroduced

BIBFRAME is a conceptual model of bibliographic description that will use theResource Description Framework (RDF) to compile libraries in accordancewith the semantic web environment

The crucial in transition to a new model and new environment will bemapping and alignment of data

Poster presents a brief overview of the basic principles of BIBFRAM and stepsneeded to convert “old” model in MARC format of bibliographic data toBIBFRAME model in RDF/xml format

Pre-selected and prepared data was in the form of mrc files that we extractedfrom the bibliographic database using ExLibris Aleph's Data Export Service

Conversion of that prepared mrc files was made using the MarcNext andBIBFRAME Testbed subprograms of MarcEdit into a valid BIBFRAME 2.0vocabulary that is available on the Library of Congress web site

The data obtained are also in mrc file but in RDF/XML format with the associatedBIBFRAME syntax

The quality of mapping data has been analyzed and compared with a specialfocus on the structure and content of the metadata in the BIBFRAMEenvironment

Result of that metadata crosswalk has been publish at the open data repository –data.nsk.hr

First and the most important step is a process of mapping MARC fields through advanced tools that enable metadata crosswalk

One of most popular tool is MarcEdit - a free application designed for the transformation and processing of metadata

Bibliographic data used for conversion (enrichment) was from the Croatian National Bibliography
