SYNOPSISSYNOPSIS In our project “AUTOMATIC FEED CONTROL OF

DRILLING DEVICE”, we attempted the drilling machine feed is controlled automatically. with the hydro-pneumatic cylinder using RELAY CONTROL.

Here, a portable hand-drilling machine is held in horizontal on a platform with a clamping attachment, which is fitted to the piston rods of the hydro-pneumatic cylinders. In hydro-pneumatic cylinder, one cylinder is filled with the oil on both sides of piston and their ports are connected with polyurethane tube of 4mm diameter.

The drilling depth can be set with the arrangement of linear scale and limit switch and is placed adjacent to the drill spindle. When the switch is pressed, this spindle starts rotating and slides by the hydro-pneumatic cylinder. The drill spindle automatically returns to the home position by the limit switch when it reaches the drilling depth. The drilling machine ON/OFF control and the solenoid valves are connected to the RELAY CONTROL output. The signals are fed to the RELAY CONTROL input.

Job feeding Unit The job is mounted in a clamping unit. The one

end of the clamping unit is connected to 5/2 directional control valve. The job is clamped with the pneumatic cylinder by control of controller.

Drilling Machine unit In this project electrical drilling machine is working

in 230v A.C. supply which is used to drill the job. This drilling m/c has the capacity to drill 1mm to 10mm diameter hole on the job. A drill chuck is also mounted in the drilling motor second end.

M.S. Base plateM.S BASE PLATE The base plate is shown in

the figure.The drilling m/c and the hydro Pneumatic cylinder unit are mounted on the M.S. sliding plate. This M.S. plate is made 25 x 25 mm ‘L ‘ angle having thickness of 3 mm. The size of base plate is 800 x 450 mm. On the top of the base plate drilling unit slides in the guide ways to avoid the sacking.

HYDRO PNEUMATIC CYLINDER UNIT

The drilling operation is start when ‘on’ switch is pressed in the control panel.When the start switch is pressed, the 5/2 way directional controlled solenoid valve supplies pressurised air to the air cylinder in the hydro pneumatic cylinder unit.At the same time the drilling machine spindle also move with rotation.The oil cylinder controls the feed movement of air cylinder.Both the piston rods are fitted in the same m.s. flat piece.The oil on one side of the cylinder moves to the other side through the 4 mm plastic tube.

SENSOR AND CONTROLLER UNIT

A Microcontroller based control system is fitted to control these solenoid valves for automatic control operations.These are mounted in a novopan board.

A magnetic sensor is also placed to locate the job at correct position for the operation of drilling.

PROCEDURE OF WORKING

Initially the job is placed in vice plate. The start switch is pressed the job is clamped by the pneumatic cylinder by the control of controller through the 5/2 solenoid operated directional control and after allowing some time delay , the drilling unit slide slides by the 5/2 solenoid operated directional control valve which is controlled by the sensor and controller unit and the drilling machine in the drilling unit slides towards the job to drill the job. The drilling operation stops by the limit switch and returned back to home position. Now the job is declamped by the pneumatic cylinder .

MICRO CONTROLLER SYSTEM

This system monitors the engine condition by using PIC 16F870 (28 pin IC Package) micro controller.The pin details of micro controller

POWER SUPPLY details

All the electronic components starting from diode to Intel IC’s only work with a DC supply ranging from +5V to +12V. We are utilizing for the same, the cheapest and commonly available energy source of 230V-50Hz and stepping down, rectifying, filtering and regulating the voltage. In our circuit the transformer of 230V/15-0-15V is used to perform the step down operation where a 230V AC appears as 15V AC across the secondary winding. Apart from stepping down voltages, it gives isolation between the power source and power supply circuitries.

technical field. Quick response is achieved. Simple in constructions. Easy to maintain and repair Cost of the unit is less when compared to

other robotics. No fire hazard problem due to over loading.

APPLICATIONS It can installed in any automated machines. It can be used in computer aided environment. It can operated with the use of robots. It can be used in automatic tool changer in

CNC turning and drilling machines. It can be used in automated assembly lines to

pick-up the finished product from workstation and place them in the bins.
