‘Automation’ is a Greek word. “Auto”(self) and “Matos”

(moving).

Automation therefore is the mechanism for systems to

“move by itself”.

Automated systems achieve significantly superior

performance than what is possible with manual systems,

in terms of power, precision and speed of operation.

Automation

Automation is a set of technologies that results in

operation of machines and systems without

significant human intervention and achieves

performance superior to manual operation

Control system is a device, or set of devices to

manage, command, direct or regulate the behaviour

of other devices or system.

Define Automation & Control

Automation System includes Control System.

Function of the control system is to ensure that output

follows the command.

Automation System has got provision to compute a

command for the control system, to monitor the system

performance and act in the event of abnormalities.

Automation and control

• Replacing human operators in tasks that involve hard

physical or monotonous work.• Frees workers to take on other roles.• Replacing humans in tasks done in dangerous

environments (i.e. fire, space, volcanoes, nuclear facilities, underwater, etc.)

• Performing tasks that are beyond human capabilities of size, weight, speed, endurance, etc.

• Reduces operation time and work handling time significantly.

• Economy improvement: Automation improves the economy of an enterprise. For example, when an enterprise invests in automation, technology recovers its investment.
