IN THIS ISSUE – 2017 D-J RALLY

Chairman’s Chat

I can hardly believe that it is March already, with Easter just around the corner, and before we know it, winter proper will be upon us. Here in the Cape, we desperately need rain, as the authorities clamp down even harder on water restrictions – with only 100x days of reserves left. Spare a thought for us as we struggle through this difficult time.

I have just taken part in the 104th

Year Memorial DJ ( Durban to Johannesburg ) Rally – commemorating the Race- the first of which took place in 1913. Coincidently the 1

st Race had 100x

Entrants – as did this year’s event, with the added difference that there were 18 x First Time Riders – 6 of which were from

Overseas, all riding machines kindly loaned by

various SA Club Members, which bodes well for our movement. The youngest rider was Tyrone Edwards – who is 19 x years old, and he rode his late

grandfather’s 500cc Velocette – which has been in the family for 55 x years. Judging from his beaming smile along the route and at Prize Giving – I think the bug has well and truly bitten.

My brother Hylton and I – have been riding in this event for nearly 20 x years – and this year in particular – were shocked at the deterioration of the road conditions in Kwa Zulu Natal – which is being blamed on the recent rainfall. To my mind this does not happen overnight – and is clearly the result of lack of maintenance, something we in the Cape are not used too.

There is still major roadworks between Volksrust and Standerton – but thereafter all work that has been completed is magnificent – so as we bear with the authorities in their endeavours, we can look forward to riding on excellent road surfaces in the next few years

As always, this event is extremely competitive, and the results for Day 1 were,

1st Overall – Gavin Walton

2nd

Overall – Tony Lyons-Lewis

3rd

Overall – Jaycee Van Rooyen

There is an old adage that the “ Winner on Day 1 “ is not the “ Winner on Day 2 “ – which was once again the case – in that the results for Day 2 were;

1st Overall – Ryan Van Heerden

2nd

Overall – Kevin Walton

( Younger brother to Gavin )

3rd

Overall – Gavin Walton

The Final Results were; 1

st Overall – Gavin Walton ( Who

has now won this event for the 3rd

Time )

2nd

Overall – Mike Ward ( who a

number of years ago dispelled the theory

of Winner on Day 1 not being Winner on

Day 2 – and the only person to do so

since 1970 )

3rd

Overall – Kevin Walton

Our Cape contingent – from the Classic Motorcycle Club, managed to scoop 8 x Trophies, with Tony Lyons-Lewis getting the Trophy for having “ completed 35 x DJ’s. Quite an achievement – Well done Tony.

Suffice it to say – when driving or riding out there on good, and sometimes

not so good roads, please do so carefully and safely – and remember to always wear protective gear and your reflective bib – when on 2 x wheels.

Take care, one and all – and may you and all your loved ones, have a peaceful Easter.

No. 118 : 12 volt petrol cut-off valves

We don’t often hear about collector cars being stolenhowever it has happened. Recently, I fitted a 12 volt petrol cut-off valve to a car and thought it may be worth mentioning that such things are available.

Originally they were designed to be part of elaborate security systems and were fitted in-line on the petrol pipe from the petrol tank to the carburettor. They operate on 12 volt and require 12 volts to open them to allow the petrol to flow and no voltage means no petrol flows. To protect our collector cars they can be operated by a hidden switch under the dash or whereever you wish it to be.

They can also be used for other purposes. For example,I recently filled one to the tank of a little BMWIsetta. These cunning little vehicles had a mechanical tapwhich fed the carburettor by gravity. However, after 50 years these mechanical taps tended to corrode and leak and are extremely difficult to replace or repair. In this case, the solution was to replace the original tap with one of these electrically operated devices. Nobody in their right minds would think of stealing an Isetta so security wasn’t an issue. To operate, I simplyconnected it to the wire from the ignition switch going to the coil. When the ignition is switched on the valve opens and the petrol flows, when the ignition is switched off – no petrol.

The car security shopskeep them in stock and they cost about

R150 each. Not much to pay for excellent security.

No. 119 : Master Brake cylinders

Looking through the brake section of a workshop manual for pre-war cars it warned of problems one could encounter if incorrect washers and/or piston return springs were fitted to the master brake cylinder. This brought back memories as years back it happened to me and in my ignorance and inexperience I thought I was the only person in the world this had happened to. However, it turns out it is not uncommon.

As a reminder, a friend came by a couple of weeks ago with tales of woe about his old series 2 Land Rovers brakes. He has had all the cylinders re-sleeved but the brakes won’t “bleed” as they should. He has taken the master cylinder out many times but cannot find anything wrong with it.

The problem could be two-fold. Firstly, the return spring is now old and weak and not returning the piston all the way back allowing the fluid to travel from the reservoir into the bottom chamber. Then there is also the small possibility that the new washer is a bit wide and partially covering the port.

Last year I had the same problem on an early car. I had the master cylinder re-sleeved by the brake experts and it wouldn’t bleed as it should. After becoming slightly neurotic and suicidal and taking it back to the “experts” twice they found the problem – the old return spring was inadequate to return the new washer (primary cup) all the way back in the re-sleeved chamber. A slightly stiffer spring solved the problem.

When I think of the hours I spent going up and under the car as well as the bottles of brake fluid wasted trying to get the brakes to bleed I’m thinking of making an effigy of the chap behind the counter who insisted I wasn’t bleeding the system correctly and sticking pins into it.

WHEN MOTOR CLUBS AND CHURCHES COLLABORATE Motor Clubs and Churches collaborate for hosting of Motor Shows in which one or both parties benefit financially. The shows can be a form of a small single club side show to a very big motor show where many clubs are invited.

Last issue of AutoNewS I wrote about the similarities of Motor Clubs and Churches. I also came across a article in a book called Methodism in Southern Africa written by Kevin Light titled YOUR HOBBY YOUR MINISTRY. That shows us how important our hobby or sport is to the outside community. It is all about being with the community in fellowship and sportsmanship generating a lot of interest in the history of motoring in South Africa. From all this we can generate more new enthusiasts. One such big event is with the NG Kerk Danie Theron in Eikenhof Johannesburg South. The motoring side is organized by Johan Krige Piston Ring, VVC & DKWOC member with the help of other Piston Ring members. The show has been running for ten years and hosts over 100 vehicles and growing. It is held at Buksies Resort in Eikenhof Park. This years show is on 4 March 2017.

In 2016 Benoni Heritage Vehicle & Engine club, Sunbeam Sports Car Club and Just Wheels Club took part in three church side shows at three different churches. The club exhibited cars, bicycles, tractors and stationary engines. All three events were a great success. These events are supported by club members because some are members of some of these churches. Photos show the side show of BHVEC and Sunbeam Sports Car Club members at the Northfield Methodist Church's Norfest in Benoni.

THE 7TH PRE-1919 KALK BAY VETERAN RUN

By Derek Stuart-Findlay

The Club was abuzz from early in the morning with participants fettling and members being curious onlookers.

Back in February 2011, Harvey and Hilton’s first Veteran Car Run to the Cape Farmhouse Restaurant near Cape Point set a standard which has been upheld ever since. It immediately became a fixture on the Crankhandle Club’s calendar and this year the 7th pre-1919 Veteran Run took place on Sunday 5th February.

The Kalk Bay Tea Stop sets a lovely scene

To the best of our knowledge this is the only club event catering exclusively for these types of vehicles in South Africa, and it has clearly become a catalyst

for Veteran car enthusiasts. As it is always scheduled to be held on the weekend prior to the George Car Show, many of our visitors and members participate annually in both events.

For a number of years now we’ve enjoyed the company of upcountry visitors Philip Kuschke, Chris van Staden, Ockert van der Berg, Kevin Casey and Ali van Jaarsveld. This year they were joined by Paul Koski from Johannesburg, while international status was achieved for the participation of our enthusiastic Canadian, Eric Edwards. Another first-timer was Wayne Harley, who joined us from the Franschhoek Motor Museum riding a 1917 Triumph which complemented beautifully the 1914 Douglas and New Hudson motorcycles ridden by Adrian Denness and Brian Wallace. Considering the number of appropriately-aged vehicles in the museum we hope to see a lot more of Wayne and his colleagues in the future.

All the participating vehicles were at least 100 years old, and it is impressive how the run continues to act as an incentive for the restoration of these Veterans. Every year, on returning to Johannesburg after the George Show, Ali van Jaarsveld has

selected a car for preparation for the following year. This year we were delighted to welcome her and her immaculate little 1903 Peugeot, the rebuild had been completed virtually the day before she left home. Last year she brought her 1912 Buick Roadster and in previous years we’ve enjoyed the company of her 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile and her 1907 Ford Model S. Her efforts were matched last year by Tom van der Vyver who, after participating in Cape Town, unveiled his wonderful 1904 De Dion Bouton restoration project at the George Car Show. In 201 we are hoping to be joined by a second 1912 Rover which Hans Zwets and his colleagues are building up from an assortment of parts.

Edwards coming on behind in the 1916 Model T Fords.

A new participant this year was Paul Koski’s inspiring 1913 Cadillac tourer, hopefully for future events it will remain here in the Cape. He was joined by our club stalwarts the Benz, the Wolseley, the De Dietrich,

Ali Van Jaarsveld in the 1903 Peugeot 5HP, Kevin Casey in the Model T Ford and Philip Kuschke in the Model T Ford bringing up the rear. It is

which had an unfortunate mishap before the run, the Nordenfelt, the EMF, the Singer, the Rover and the Hupmobile. It is interesting how the numbers of other makes entered are starting to catch up with the popular Ford Model Ts. That arch-enthusiast Kevin Casey tells us that he has now bought a 1914 Buick, and it is rumoured that Hilton has bought a 1912 Maxwell as a stable-mate for his similarly-aged Ford.

A large crowd of non-participating club

members met for breakfast at Dixies in Glencairn to cheer on the Veterans as they cantered past, and at the end of the run tourists thronged Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town to view the array of mobile works of art. They had plenty of time to admire these masterpieces as Harvey had organized a driver’s tour of one of the submarines moored in the harbor, much to everyone’s relief its age proved to be considerably less than 100. In October 2014 the club organized the first Pre-1946 run to the South Peninsula, and this February the first Post-1945 event is to be held. We now have annual activities catering specifically for the capabilities of each one of our vehicles, and the concept of hosting

events appropriate for steeds of all ages has been realized in full. Unfortunately Ali van Jaarsveld has to rationalize part of her collection of beautiful cars, but she has been kind enough to offer them to our members before going out into the market. One

ofthese is her 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile which would make an extremely popular entry for the 2018 Veteran Car Run. We know there are local members who would love to join in this fun event, so consider

this a real investment for the future. How about it?

GEORGE OLD CAR SHOW

Some of the beautiful oldies at the 21

st George Old Car Show.

The 21st George Old Car show was, despite

the cloudy and sometimes drizzily weather, well attended and any vistor’s main reason for going was to see old friends and any new old vehicles. The show was proudly driven by Oakhurst Insurance and took place on 11 & 12 February 2017 at the PW Botha High School Grounds. This event is hosted annually by the Southern Cape Old Car Club and the funds raised are donated to various local organizations. This year’s special exhibition in the arena area was dedicated to German cars. In addition, there were a wide variety of vintage and veteran cars, tractors,

motorcycles, model motors and static engines and hundreds of cars from across the country were exhibited at the show.

A magnificent 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL at the Ring of Fame.

The show’s coming of age was celebrated in style with an exhibition of vintage and classic cars of German manufacture in the Ring of Fame. The 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, one of only 10 replicas worldwide, was without doubt the crowning glory of the show. An exhibition of miniature models also reflecting vehicles of German origin echoed the theme. Veteran tractors, which for the first time led the procession in the main arena, were met with much enthusiasm. They were followed by the different categories of vintage and classic cars.

Despite a threatening thunder storm and intermittent showers of rain, a festive atmosphere prevailed. Business was brisk at the SAB Beer Tent and numerous stalls selling food and soft drinks as well as a variety of merchandise, including vehicle-related goods. The House of Classic and Sports Cars sold about half of the vehicles offered at auction. The highest prices were paid for a Valiant (R180 000) and a Renault Caravelle 110 GT (R150 000).

A total of 1070 cars, tractors, motorcycles and stationary engines

The show host, The Southern Cape Old Car Club will be making a substantial donation to deserving local charities in addition to percentage of the entrance fees that the venue host, PW Botha College, will receive. This year’s DJ Rally started at the Oxford Village Centre, Hillcrest, at 06:00 on Friday, March 10, and finished from about 14:15 on Saturday, March 11, at the Classic Motorcycle Club's premises on the corner of Power and Refinery Roads in Germiston, with an overnight stop in Newcastle.

Gavin Walton, winner of the 2017 DJ Rally,

arrives at the finish in Germiston on his 1936 AJS.

This year’s rally attracted an entry of 93 riders on motorcycles made before 1937. There were many previous winners in this year’s field, including seven-time winner Kevin Robertson on one of his beloved Velocettes, three-time winner Martin Davis (1930 Sunbeam Lion) as well as Gavin Walton (1936 AJS 9), Mike Ward (1936 Velocette MSS) and Allan Cunninghame (1936 Velocette MSS).

Gavin Walton (centre) receives his silverware at the prize giving. He is flanked by Clerk of

the Course Claude Stander and Domaine Rautenbach, Brand Manager at Eskort, one of

the sponsors of the event and a company celebrating its centenary this year.

This was the 46th running

of this regularity rally which commemorates the annual motorcycle races held on public roads between Durban and Johannesburg from 1913 to 1936. This year there were 70 finishers from an original field of 93 riders, with four non-starters and 19 non-finishers. This year the riders had favourable weather for most of the trip, with only one slight shower encountered, after a heavy downpour in Durban on the day before the start. There were some grumbles about the electronic loggers at the finish at the Classic Motorcycle Club’s premises in Germiston on the Saturday afternoon, but scorer Leon Stander could sort out the glitches to the satisfaction of the competitors by the time prizegiving was scheduled at the Vintage and Veteran Club’s premises in Oaklands the following day. Leon Stander pointed out that errors using the loggers was only about 2% and this compared very favourably with human errors when people had acted as timekeeping marshals on this event in the past.

Clerk of the Course Claude Stander, who was the chief organiser of this famous event for the first time, said he was very pleased with the way the event had run and he says he is

up to fill the position of clerk of the course in 2018. Gavin Walton, who rode an immaculate 1936 500cc AJS motorcycle, won this event in 2009 and was second in 2010, 2014 and 2016. He notched up his second win in the prestigious DJ Rally for classic motorcycles made before 1937 when he won the 2017 event at the weekend (March 10/11). He had a total error of 220 seconds for the two-day event which took competitors from Durban to Johannesburg with an overnight stop in Newcastle.

However, where he showed true grit was the he recovered from severe injuries received in a road accident in 2013. On that occasion, he was riding home in the rain after the 2013 Pre-DJ Rally. He stopped under a bridge to shelter from the downpour when he was hit by a car skidding out of control on the wet road and had his leg broken among other injuries. He not only recovered from the injuries but has been a serious contender on every DJ Rally he has contested since his recovery.

Second-placed Mike Ward, a previous winner

of the DJ Rally, receives his trophy. On the left is Clerk of the Course Claude Stander and in the centre is Domaine Rautenbach, Brand Manager of Eskort, one of the sponsors, who

presented the trophies.

Second overall was

another former DJ Rally winner, Mike Ward, who rode a 1936 500cc Velocette MSS. His error was 304 seconds. Third place

was filled by Gavin Walton’s brother, Kevin, on a 1931 500cc BSA, and who had won the Pre-DJ Rally a couple of weeks before the main event.

Ralph Pitchford, winner of the 2016 DJ Rally, did not do so well this year, finishing 15th on his more powerful 1933 BSA which replaced

the 1926 Triumph he rode to victory last year.

Ralph Pitchford, last year’s

winner, said he found it difficult getting used to riding at set average speeds on his latest motorcycle, a 1933 500cc BSA, compared to his previous mount, a less powerful, 1926 500cc Triumph. He finished 15th this year, after an erratic first day when he collected 443 seconds’ error. The second day was much better and he finished fourth with 124 seconds’ error, for a total of 567 seconds’ error. ` The number of first time riders this year – 15 of them – was an encouraging sign for classic motorcycle rallying and nine of them qualified as finishers. The best performance was put up by Greg Kendall (1936 500cc Velocette MSS), who finished 13th overall by recording errors of less than 300 seconds on each of

the two days for a total error of 455 seconds.

First-time rider Franschoek Museum curator,

Two well-known first-time riders, TV presenter Harry Fisher and Franschoek Museum curator, Wayne Harley, both completed the course finishing 77th and 76th respectively. Stuart Thompson, well known in the local motor sport who finished. He as placed

48th and said he found his first regularity motorcycle rally a wonderful experience and will be back for more on his 1932 Sunbeam. The youngest rider to qualify as a finisher was 19-year-old Tyrone Edwards, another first-time rider, who was mounted on a 1936 250cc BSA. The oldest rider to complete the course was 82-year-old Neville Smith, who rode a 1936 350cc Ariel Red Hunter and placed 46th.

The oldest motorcycle to complete the course was Hans Coertse’s 1913 1 039cc Matchless 7B. They were the last official finisher in 70th place. Only one woman rider, Beverley Jacobs, completed the course as the other woman in the field, Samantha Anderson, suffered cruel misfortune when her 1909 Humber pedal cycle – the oldest motorcycle in the field – ran out of sparks near Heidelberg, on the final run in to Johannesburg. This venerable machine had been meticulously rebuilt after sustaining serious damage when it caught fire during the 2016 DJ Rally. Samantha was rewarded with the Hard Luck trophy for her efforts to get the Humber to the finish. The fathers of two MotoGP riders, Derek Crutchlow (father of Cal, who races in MotoGP on a Honda) and Trevor Binder (father of Brad, the 2016 Moto3 world champion on a KTM) both qualified as finishers, placing 51st and 55th respectively.

champion, Brad, on arrival of the finish of the 2017 DJ Rally in Durban. He rode a 1925

There was a vote at the prizegiving as to whether the direction of the rally should be reversed to go from Johannesburg to Durban in 2018, with those present voted strongly for the event to continue to follow the Durban to Johannesburg

PISTON RING CLUB’S

BI-ANNUAL SWOP

MEET AT

MODDERFONTEIN

19 March 2017

Typical old car part stall with Cars for Sale in the background

As allways the March swop

meet at Modderfontein organised by the Piston Ring Club was its usual great success drawing large crowds of motor enthusiasts from all over South Africa.

The weather was excellent although slightly cold early in the morning. Not all the demarkated stall areas were filled and by 9:00 the crowds were making it difficult to move freely from stall to stall.

A typical Memorabilia stall of which there were many

There was a great variety of stalls, with the greater emphasis on Motor Memorabilia and flea market type stalls. Food stalls were also encrouching on the tradidional spaces reserved for motor car parts. Sadly spares for the older cars and bikes were sorely lacking - very few

of the motor stalls had real old car parts for sale. Where they were offered, the prices demanded were exorbitant. So much so that one could import these parts from America at a much cheaper price.

A typical “Junk”stall!

Very little motor related items for sale!

A stall with some old car parts and much memorabilia.

As in the past the area reserved for show cars was brimfull with beautufully restored vehicles and some very collectable cars were offered for sale at the area reserved for Cars for Sale.

Swoppers enjoying the sunshine and stalls.

Cars in the exhibition area.

More cars in the exhibition area.

It will be good for future swop meets if the organisers of this event will veto the content of the stalls and in future possibly separate the Food Stalls, Memorabilia Stalls and Flea Market Stalls from the actual Motoring Part Stalls. ****************************

As you are aware SAVVA continues to be involved in discussions regarding the reduction of customs duties in respect of older vehicles. The attached notice in the Government Gazette requests comment from interested parties and Dave Alexander, who has been handling this for SAVVA, has requested that Clubs read this notice, and then submit any information or comments to support the dropping of Duties to him [email protected] with a copy to Jean Gobey our SAVVA Secretary.

MOTORSPORT NEWS CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE FOR A SPECIAL EVENT ALL SAVVA AFFILIATED CLUBS:

At a recent National Council Meeting, the decision was taken to encourage all SAVVA affiliated clubs to apply for the Special Clearance certificate when organising an event of the nature of a Cars in the Park, Car show or any other event of the kind.

In most instances the local authorities require proof of public liability prior to issuing any permissions. This will be forwarded to you on request but only on the proviso that the club has applied for the relevant certificate.

The benefit to the club holding a Cars in the Park or any event of this nature is huge – The cover that SAVVA holds is R10 million and I feel very confident that cover of this value is not available anywhere for the nominal cost of R500.00. Please note that SAVVA will continue to circulate all club flyers etc to our data base of clubs but this will only be done once Motorsport has given the relevant clearance certificate number to the secretariat. Special Event / Cars in the Park ( Annexure A 3 ) How to apply – download the application form from the SAVVA website ( found in handbook ) – complete and send proof of payment to [email protected]

INFORMATION ON BALANCE 3RD PARTY COVER

Please note that as from 2017, the balance of 3rd

Party cover which is offered to all SAVVA affiliated clubs for any event at a cost of R50.00 (implemented in 2013) will now have to attract a minimum of 10 entrants per

event making use of it in order for this benefit to be offered.

In the past FNB insurance brokers have kindly allowed us to make use of this policy without enforcing the minimum number, however due to the volume of paperwork required to offer this cover to our entrants the Insurance company are now going to enforce the requirement.

Should a competitor not have any insurance cover, it would be advisable for all organisers to request that the entrant obtains this cover privately. Regards, Pam Hall SAVVA Motorsport

Knysna Motor Show 30 April: Pre-War MGs, micro-cars, and a very rare Bentley for the Knysna Motor Show Although the organisers are expecting a turnout of more than 500 exceptional vehicles, the Knysna Motor Show sponsored by

Sanlam Private Wealth promises three very special appearances this year. “While we welcome everyone to come along to see

and enjoy the vintage and veteran cars and motorcycles, and the super cars, classic sports cars, and new-era electric vehicles

on show, we're very selective about the exhibits we allow - which appear by invitation only. This keeps the show fresh and

interesting every year,” said the chairperson of the Garden Route Motor Club, Peter Pretorius.

“As one of South Africa's most prestigious motor shows, the Knysna Motor Show naturally attracts the attention of the owners of

the most prestigious and unusual vehicles on the road, and we're proud to announce that this year's event will feature one of

FUTURE SAVVA EVENTS

FOR SALE: Circa 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 Rear axle, brake drums & steering box with column. The axle number is 18NE15X52Z61 and I believe it came from Chassis No. 19RC. My Dad bought it in 1958 from a friend in Johannesburg who had a motor spares scrapyard. Since the axle is similar/the same as the Ghost, he felt he was hedging his bets against any possible problems he might experience in the future. I understand that the axle came from a Phantom which belonged to the Mayor of one of the towns on the Rand and that it was involved in a front-end collision which resulted in the car being sold for scrap.
