AUTONOMY
The quality or state of being self-governing; especially : the
right of self-government.
Self-directing freedom and especially moral independence
Merriam-webster dictionary
The pictures above shows us an example about different perspectives. In the decision making process we have to consider these perspectives.
Similarly in life, in order to motivate others, we need to be aware that they need space to express themselves. Providing that “space” to be autonomous is an important fact in motivating others.
It means to value and respect other people’s ideas, find out what they really need and find ways to provide them.
Self Determination Theory
People are centrally concerned
with motivation — how to move themselves or
others to act.
Everywhere, parents, teachers, coaches, and
managers struggle with how to motivate those
that they mentor
individuals struggle to find energy, mobilize
effort and persist at the tasks of life and work.
Self Determination Theory
People are often moved by external factors
such as reward systems, grades, evaluations of
others etc.
Yet just as frequently, people are motivated
from within, by interests, curiosity, care or
abiding values.
These intrinsic motivations are not necessarily externally
rewarded or supported, but nonetheless they can sustain
passions, creativity, and sustained efforts.
WHAT MOTIVATES US?
AUTONOMY
RELATEDNESS
COMPETENCE
ACCORDING TO EDWARD DECI AND RICHARD RYAN, ACTION IS ENERGIZED AND DIRECTED BY THREE BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS
AUTONOMYCOMPETENCERELATEDNESS
SO, AUTONOMY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR DECISION MAKING/ACTION.
TO BE AUTONOMOUS MEANS TOBEHAVE WITH A SENSE OF VOLITION,WILLINGNESS, AND CONGRUENCE; ITMEANS TO FULLY ENDORSE ANDCONCUR WITH THE BEHAVIOR ONE ISENGAGED IN.
SUPPORTING AUTONOMY MEANS
BEING ABLE TO SEE THE WORLD AS THE OTHER PSERSON SEE IT.
ACKNOWLEDGE THE VIEWS OF THE OTHER PERSON.
UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY WANT AND WHY THEY WANT IT.
UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DO WHAT THEY DO.
CREATE WIN-WIN SITUATIONS.

AUTONOMY AND COMPETITION
Competition can create conflicts with the Autonomy supportive environment. It can hinder the decision making process and creativity.
It will lead to win-lose situations instead of win-win situation
Autonomy should lead to self evaluation and self-competition, in another words, identify the self and adjust accordingly.
RELIGIOUS LIFE AND AUTONOMY
Understanding of autonomy in religious
life is important in our decision making
process, in another words, discernment.
The question is, is religious life product of
self-determination?
TRANS-FORMATION
A person can start with an external motivation
and start to identify himself with the internal
motivation.
In the formation process, there is time and
space for discernment, to identify the internal
motivations and adapt to it.
This is a process that involves free choice and
decision making.
AUTONOMY AND FREEDOM
In an autonomy supportive environment, there
is choice.
But there are guidelines that we have to follow
while enjoying ur freedom.
These guidelines are there not to restrict /limit,
but to accompany us in our expression of
autonomy and freedom.
I promise to go wherever I
may be sent, and to do
whatever I may be assigned
by the body of the Society or
its superiors.
THE RULE AND AUTONOMY
In the community, the RULE plays an important role.
The rule requires our free choice to be submitted, so it values the autonomy and discernment of the individual.
It defines our identity as Brothers, while allowing us to express our freedom in its range.
In another words, the rule itself is autonomy supportive within its boundaries that defines who we are.
The Rule defines the meaning of the Brothers’
life. It translates into modern terms and reaffirms
what St. John Baptist de La Salle intended in his
Rule. By their religious profession the Brothers
undertake to observe it joyfully, as a personal
response by which they continually renew the
gift of themselves.Rule 147
